' 1 Claim.
insurance costs and to make for a simple and comparatively inexpensive construction.
In the attainment of such objects I provide a ring or sput, the bore of which is adapted and arranged to receive and completely house the conventional screw-threaded plug, the outer end of the ring extending beyond the gasket seat of the head of the plug and having internal and external rim seats, whereof one accommodates a sealing element and whereof the other constitutes an under shoulder or abutment against which may be forced in engaging or clenching relation the marginal wall of any conventional form of resilient metal crown or disk closure.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention more readily will be understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a container wall having an opening provided with a ring or sput embodying features of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a sectional View of the complete closure.
Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are sections of varied types of caps.
Fig. '7 is a sectional view of the closure with a non-tamper provision.
Fig. 8 is a sectional view of the locking ring, Fig. '7.
Referring to the drawings, 5 represents a. container wall having an opening in which is secured in any usual or approved manner a ring or sput 6. According to my invention the latter is of unit construction such as a casting or forging having a bore of differential cross-section wholly to receive a plug of conventional type, that is to say,
the lower bore l is screw-threaded to take the shank of the plug and the upper bore 8 is of increased diameter to accommodate the head of the plug and is defined by a ledge or shoulder 9 to support a gasket or packing ring Ill properly to seal the head of the plug.
The crown of the sput is located beyond the head of the plug and in cross-section is of generally bulbous form, that is to say, its rim has a pronounced external flange or bead l l of arcuate form terminating in a bottom abutment or shoulder I2; and intermediate the rim and the perpendicular wall of the sput there is a groove 5 or channel I3 to accommodate a packing or sealing element I 4.
The parts described are so constructed that when the plug is screwed home there is clearance between its head and the crown of the sput 10 to accommodate the sealing element M. The latter may be a separate element or it may be of the type that is carried by a conventional form of resilient metal cap.
Manifestly the external seal may be locked to place by various expedients of resilient metal caps. For example, the plain disk l5 shown in Fig. 4 may have its margin curled over the crown of the sput so as to clench the bottom shoulder or abutment as shown at H5 in Fig. 3; or there may be employed a conventional form of flanged disk I! equipped with a cork disk as shown in Fig. 5. And in continuation of this thought, there is shown in Fig. 6 a cap of the conventional type embodying a body portion l8 which may be flexed inwardly or outwardly to cause its slitted flange or skirt 19 to engage or be disengaged from the abutment. This form of cap has the merit that it may be manipulated by hand in the well-known manner.
In order to prevent unauthorized or accidental removal of the slip-on cap and positively to insure of its sealing function, I sometimes employ an external ring 20 of angular section whereof one limb engages the top of the cap and whereof the other limb or skirt engages that part of the cap impinging upon the abutment as shown in Fig. 7. Obviously, in order to remove the resilient cap and so have access to the plug, it is necessary to manipulate the locking ring to the point of destruction. Thus it constitutes a telltale or evidence of tampering or pilfering.
. Having described the invention, what I claim as new is:
The combination of a plug fitting and a plug having threaded engagement therewith, the plug and fitting presenting abrupt annular shoulders to cooperate with an interposed sealing disk to be compressed in the threaded action of the plug,
the fitting having an annular part extending beyond the outer plain surface of the plug when the latter is seated, the inner margin of the extended portion of the fitting having a recessed portion arranged wholly beyond the peripheral margin of the plug, a sealing disk seated in said recess and. bearing on the plain outer surface of the plug, a cap overlying and bearing throughout on the surface of the latter sealing disk and having edge interlocking with the outer surface of the fitting, and a ring bearing on the cap and overlying and interlocking with the cap in that portion engaged with the fitting.
GEORGE W. TODD.
