Abstract
A wheeled bag system having a bag with a handle at one end and a wheel system at the other, with either a concealed or exterior-knob lock moving wheels between exposed and hidden positions by either folding the wheels in and up, or retracting the wheels into a cavity in the wheel system.
Description
- This application claim priority of U.S. Non-Provisional patent application Ser. No. 13/374,864 filed on Jan. 19, 2012 to Eduardo D'Angelo for Universal Wheeled Bag System and it is a Continuation in Part of the U.S. Non-Provisional patent application Ser. No. 13/374,864.
- 1. Introduction
- Wheels are useful for moving objects. Manufacturers commonly place wheels on luggage. Wheels make moving the luggage easier. However, when you are not wheeling the luggage, the wheels get in the way and risk being damaged or causing damage.
- 2. Field of the Invention
- The present invention relates to a wheeled system for luggage. Wheels on the luggage are either exposed or concealed, depending on whether a user is wheeling the luggage, or the luggage is stationary or stowed.
- 3. Description of the Prior Art
- Wheeled luggage is disclosed in U.S. patents. For example, U.S. Pat. No. 7,997,591 to Arthur teaches a chassis with retractable wheels, wherein the chassis includes a housing.
- U.S. Pat. No. 7,861,834 to Gorga teaches retractable wheel system for towable baggage.
- U.S. Pat. No. 7,066,311 to O'Shea teaches a retractable wheel assembly for a carrier. A retractable wheel assembly (110) for a carrier (100) is disclosed wherein the wheels (120) are rotatably mounted in cowls (130), which are pivotably disposed in wheel wells (116L, 116R) on a housing. The cowls are connected with a cowl axle assembly (140) that includes a coil spring, preferably a constant force spring (150) that biases the cowls towards a retracted position. The constant force spring is connected to a retractable handle (104), preferably with a spring engagement member (160), such that extending the retractable handle will bias the cowls towards an extended position, wherein the wheels extend out of the wheel wells for use.
- It is an object of the present invention to provide a wheeled bag system with a lock that a user can manipulate to move luggage wheels between exposed and hidden positions.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide an exterior-knob lock for a wheeled system a user manipulates by sliding a knob up and down a lateral surface of luggage.
- A further object of the present invention is to provide a concealed lock for a wheeled system a user manipulates by sliding a plate through an opening in the bottom surface of luggage.
- Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a wheeled system where the wheels fold in and up into a cavity at the bottom of an article of luggage.
- One more object of the present invention is to provide a wheeled system where the wheels move up and down, retracting into a cavity at the bottom of an article of luggage.
- Other objects and further scope of applicability of the present invention will become apparent from the detailed description given hereinafter. However, it should be understood, that the detailed description and specific examples, while indicating preferred embodiments of the invention, are given by way of illustration only, since various changes and modifications within the spirit and scope of the invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art from this detailed description.
- The present invention will be better understood from the detailed description given herein below and the accompanying drawings with which are given by way of illustration only.

wheeled luggage system 10 of the present invention is illustrated generally inFIG. 1 a and 1 b. Here, one sees aconventional bag 12 with itshandle 16 and first and second wheels, 22, 24 although there are typically first, second, third andfourth wheels FIG. 11 , andFIG. 12 . For purposes of orientation, it is helpful to characterize the bag as having handle and wheel system ends. - The
bag 12 also has a lessconventional lock 20 with alock plate 57 and aknob 54. Thelock 20 is proximal to thewheel system 14 end of thewheeled luggage system 10. Thelock 20 interacts withposition control plates - The wheel system has a
housing 18 for receiving at least twowheels - Moving the
position control plates lock 20, to the exposed position move thewheels housing 18 to expose thewheels lock 20, to the hidden position move thewheels housing 18, to hide thewheels - There are two types of locks and two types of wheel systems, and they can be matched in four different lock-wheel system combinations. The wheel systems might either be folding or retractable wheel systems, the details and differences described below. The locks might be either exterior-knob locks, or concealed locks, the details and differences described below.

fourth wheels fourth brackets first bar 30 rotates around a first bracket-bar pin 36. The first bracket bar pin is attached at one end to thefirst wheel bracket 32 and at the other end to thefourth bracket 42. Similarly, on the other side, the second andthird wheels third brackets second bar 38 rotates around a second bracket-bar pin 44. The second bracket-bar pin 44 is attached at one end to thesecond wheel bracket 34 and at the other end to thethird wheel bracket 40. - A first
position control plate 50, having afirst bracket end 47 and a first knob-pin end 51, joins thefirst bracket 32, via thefirst bracket end 47, to thelock 20, via the first knob-pin end 51. Similarly, on the other side, a secondposition control plate 52, having asecond bracket end 49 and a second knob-pin end 53, joins thesecond bracket 34, via thesecond bracket end 49, to thelock 20, via the second knob-pin end 53, as illustrated inFIG. 2 a. -
FIG. 6 a throughFIG. 7 b show an embodiment of the presently claimed invention having a retractable wheel system. Thewheels wheels housing 18 for receiving the wheels. Typically, first, second, third andfourth wheels FIG. 6 a andFIG. 7 a illustrate the exposed positions.FIG. 6 b andFIG. 7 b illustrate the hidden positions. - A single long position-
control plate 98 attaches in the middle to thelock 20. The long position-control plate 98 has first and second bracket receiving ends 202, 204. These ends attach to the first andsecond brackets fourth brackets fourth wheels brackets - A
first bar 30 attaches to the first andfourth brackets control plate 98 moves thefirst wheel 22 between exposed and hidden positions, thefourth wheel 28 follows, likewise moving between exposed and hidden positions. - A
second bar 38 attaches to the second andthird brackets control plate 98 moves thesecond wheel 24 between exposed and hidden positions, thethird wheel 26 follows, likewise moving between exposed and hidden positions. -
FIG. 1 a throughFIG. 7 b all show embodiments of the present invention having an exterior-knob lock 20. Thelock 20 is so named because one can see the part of the lock mechanism, theknob 54 and theknob plate 57, exposed on a lateral surface of the luggage. -
FIG. 4 andFIG. 5 show cross-sectional and perspective views, respectively, of the exterior-knob lock 20, with a folding wheel system. - The exterior-
knob lock 20 features alock housing 55 with aknob plate 57 parallel to apulley plate 81. First andsecond side plates pulley plates second side plates pulley plates knob plate 57 attaches to a lateral surface of the bag. - A
plug channel 56 is defined within theknob plate 57. Theplug channel 56 runs longitudinally from the wheel system end to the handle end. Additionally, theplug channel 56 has a hidden-position enlargement 58 at the channel end proximal to the handle end, and an exposed-position enlargement 60 proximal to the wheel system end. - A
pulley channel 80 is defined within thepulley plate 81. Thepulley channel 80 runs longitudinally from the wheel system end to the handle end. - First and second
side plate channels second side plates side plate channels control plates lock housing 55 via the first and secondside plate channels - A
knob pin 62, has apulley end 162, attaches at the pulley end 162 to apulley 76 having a grooved circumference. The grooves allow thepulley 76 to slide along thepulley channel 80. - A
retain ring 74 fixed on theknob pin 62 proximal to thepulley 76 and within thelock housing 55 holds springs and washers in place. Aspring 72 abuts theretain ring 74, and wraps around theknob pin 62. Theknob pin 62 receives tension drawing theknob pin 62 toward the pulley end 162 of theknob pin 62. - A
spring washer 70 presses against thespring 72. Thespring washer 70 slides around theknob pin 62 and abuts the first position-control plate 50. The first position-control plate 50 attaches to theknob pin 62 at the knob-pin receiving end of the first position-control plate 51. - A position-
control plate washer 68 slides around theknob pin 62 between the first and second position-control plates control plate 52 attaches to theknob pin 62 at the knob-pin receiving end 53 of the second position-control plate 52 proximal to the plug end of theknob pin 62. - A
plug 63 is attached to the plug end 163 of theknob pin 62. Theplug 63 is too large to fit into theplug channel 56 and theplug 63 is large enough to fit in both the hidden-position 58 and exposedposition enlargements 60 of theknob plate 62. - A
knob 54 is attached to theplug 63, distal to theknob plate 57. Theknob 54 does not fit within the hidden-position 58 and exposedposition enlargements 60 of theknob plate 57. - A
knob pin washer 66 slides around theknob pin 62 between theknob plate 57 and the second position-control plate 52 and within thelock housing 55. A plug washer 64 attached around theknob pin 62 between theplug 63 and theknob plate 57. - The wheel system has at least three
legs FIG. 1 b andFIG. 11 . - Another embodiment of the presently claimed invention, features a variation of the lock referred to as shuttle-
exterior knob lock 23 as illustrated inFIG. 5 c andFIG. 5 d. This lock has foursides lock housing 55. Thehousing 55 has aknob plate 57 parallel to apulley plate 81. First andsecond side plates pulley plates second side plates pulley plates lock housing 55 is attached to a lateral surface of the bag via theknob plate 57. - The
knob plate 57 has aplug channel 56 defined therein. Theplug channel 56 runs longitudinally from the wheel system end to the handle end. Theplug channel 56 has a hidden-position enlargement 58 at the channel end proximal to the handle end, and an exposed-position enlargement 60 proximal to the wheel system end. - First and second
side plate channels second side plates side plate channels control plates exit lock housing 55 via the first and secondside plate channels - A
knob pin 62 hasplug 63 and pulley pin ends 162. Thepulley pin end 162 exits thepulley channel 80 allowing thepulley pin end 162 to slide along thepulley channel 80. In this embodiment, however, there is no pulley; the shuttle mechanism eliminates the necessity for a pulley. Reference to a pulley end distinguishes the plug end. - Moving from the
pulley pin end 162 to the plug end of theknob pin 62, one first finds aretain ring 87. Theretain ring 87 is located at the very end of thepulley pin end 162, preventing the knob pin from falling out of the lock. Next, aretain ring washer 85 abuts theretain ring 87 and aspring 72 wrapped around theknob pin 62. Thespring 72 produces tension to draw theknob pin 62 toward thepulley pin end 162. Theknob pin 62 then sequentially pierces the following: thepulley plate 81 of the lock housing, ashuttle 59 as illustrated inFIG. 5 b (described below), and theknob plate 57. - A
plug 63 is fixed to theknob pin 62. Theplug 63 is too large to fit into theplug channel 56 allowing theknob pin 62 to slide from end to end of theplug channel 56. Theplug 63 fits both the hidden-position and exposedposition enlargements knob plate 57 preventing theknob pin 62 from moving along theplug channel 56. - A
knob 54 is fixed to theplug 63. Theknob 54 does not fit within either the hidden-position or exposedposition enlargements knob plate 57. A user pulls theknob 54 towards her to disengage the plug from the either the hidden-position and exposedposition enlargements knob plate 57, thus allowing theknob pin 62 to slide along the channel. - A
shuttle 59 is disposed within the lock housing as illustrated inFIG. 5 c. Theshuttle 59 has a rectangular bar shape, thus allowing theshuttle 59 to slide smoothly within thelock housing 55. Theshuttle 59 has parallel first andsecond faces second sides second faces second sides knob plate 57 andpulley plate 80. Theshuttle 59 further has a knob-pin aperture 61 defined therein. Theknob pin 62 passes through the first andsecond faces - Additionally, there is a rectangular-bar hollow 65 defined in the
shuttle 59 rectangular bar. The first and secondposition control plates second sides channels position control plates shuttle 59. - Each exit of the four wheels have two
flaps FIG. 5 e andFIG. 5 f allowing closing the hole while the wheels are hidden and unable to see the wheels. - When the wheels are hidden and moved to be exposed the wheels push the flaps to be opened while they are exposed. The bottom surface of the
luggage 120 has aclosing mechanism 282, typically a zipper or one lock in each side except one side for a hinge and the lid of theluggage 280. - Each flexible rubbers flaps has attached at the end a metal or

concealed lock 21 features aconcealed lock housing 102. Theconcealed lock housing 102 has first andsecond side plates side plate channels second side plates side plate channels control plates concealed lock housing 102 via the first and secondside plate channels - First and
second edges second side plates second edges concealed lock housing 102 to an interior surface of the bag. - A
back plate 115, with aback plate channel 56 defined therein, separates the first andsecond side plates back plate 115 is perpendicular to the first andsecond side plates - A
lock pin 200, withretain ring end 205 and pulley plate ends 107, attaches to aretain ring 211 at the other end of thelock pin 200. Thelock pin 200 and retainring end 205 are both inside theconcealed lock housing 102. - A position-
control plate washer 68 rotates around thelock pin 200 between the first and second position-control plates control plate 52 attaches to thelock pin 200 at thepin receiving end 53 of the second position-control plate 52 proximal to the retain ring end 53 of thelock pin 200. Awasher 70 is between thepin receiving end 53 and theretain ring end 205. - A
pulley 76, having a grooved circumference, slides along thepulley plate channel 56. Thepulley 76 attaches to thelock pin 200. Apulley washer 66 is located between thepulley 76 and the pin receiving 51 of the firstposition control plate 50. - A
pulley plate 106, having pin and knob ends 107, 109, is divided into a stationary section 111 proximal to thepin end 107, and afolding section 110 proximal to theknob end 109. Thepulley plate 106 attaches to thepulley plate end 107 of thelock pin 200. Thepulley plate 106 is movable between exposed and hidden positions. - A pulley plate access opening 122 is defined in the bottom surface of the
bag 120. Theaccess opening 122 allows thepulley plate 106 to move from the inside to the outside of the bag. - A
pulley plate hinge 108, proximal to theknob end 109 of thepulley plate 106, separates the stationary andfolding sections 111, 110. The positioning allows thehinge 108 to be outside the bag when thepulley plate 106 is in the exposed position, and thefolding section 110 folds between being perpendicular to the bottom external surface of the bag, to a parallel position, flush with the bottom of the bag. - A
concealed lock knob 116 attaches to theknob end 109 of thepulley plate 106. A user can grasp theknob 116 and move thepulley plate 106 between exposed and hidden positions. - A
magnet attracting plate 114 attaches to theknob end 109 of thepulley plate 106. Amagnet 124 attaches to the external bottom surface of the bag. Themagnet 124 attracts and holds themagnet attracting plate 114 when thepulley plate 106 is in the exposed position and thefolding section 110 of thepulley plate 106 is in the parallel position, flush with the bottom of the bag. - A
ball catch concavity 112 is defined in thefolding section 110 of thepulley plate 106. Aball catch mechanism 118 in the bag having aball spring 119 pushes aball 121 out of a ball catchesconcavity 112 when thepulley plate 106 is moving from the hidden position. Theball catch mechanism 118 is so positioned that thespring 119 forces theball 121 into theball catch concavity 112 when thepulley plate 106 is in the hidden position. - Yet another embodiment of the presently claimed invention, features a variation of the lock referred to as shuttle-concealed
lock 25 as illustrated inFIG. 10 d. In this embodiment, however, there is no pulley; the shuttle mechanism eliminates the necessity for a pulley. - This lock has three
sides lock housing 102. These sides include first andsecond side plates side plate channels 245, 246 defined therein. The first andsecond side plates side plate channels 245, 246 running longitudinally from the wheel system end to the handle end. The first and second position-control plates concealed lock housing 102 via the first and secondside plate channels 245, 246, respectively. The third plate is aback plate 238 perpendicular to and separating the first andsecond side plates - The
concealed lock housing 102 attaches to an interior surface of the bag via first andsecond edges second side plates - A
shuttle 220 is disposed within thelock housing 102. Theshuttle 220 has a rectangular bar shape allowing theshuttle 220 to slide smoothly within thelock housing 102. Theshuttle 220 has parallel first andsecond faces second sides second faces second sides second edges second sides back plate 238. Theshuttle 220 further has a rectangular-bar hollow 65 defined therein proximal to the first end. The first and secondposition control plates sides plate channels 245, 246, and first and second position control plate pins 67, 69 inside the rectangular-bar hollow 65 rotatably attach the first and secondposition control plates shuttle 220. - A
lever 222 attaches to the second end of theshuttle 220 by alever pin 242. Thelever pin 242 allows thelever 222 and theshuttle 220 to rotatably move from a parallel to a perpendicular position. Thelever 222 further has first andsecond dimples shuttle 220. A user can grab thelever 222 to pull or push theshuttle 220 inside thelock housing 102. Acylinder catch cavity 224 is defined in thelever 222 between the first andsecond dimples lever pin 242. A cylinder catch mechanism has acylinder spring 252 in acylinder case 250. Thecylinder spring 252 pushes acylinder 254 partially out from thecylinder case 250. The cylinder engages and secures thelever 222 via thecylinder catch cavity 224 in a position parallel to theshuttle 220, placing the wheels of the bag in the hidden position. Amagnet attracting plate 236 is attached to the lever 222 amagnet 230 on the bottom of the bag. - The
magnet 230 and themagnet plate 236 secure thelever 222 in a position perpendicular to theshuttle 220, placing the wheels of the bag in an exposed position. Alever lid 232 covers thelever 222 in the bottom of the bag. Thelever lid 232 is removable so a user can move thelever 222 to place the wheels in either exposed or hidden positions. Thelever lid 232 covers the lever when the lever is not being manipulated. - Each exit of the wheels have two
flaps FIG. 10 g andFIG. 10 h allowing closing the hole while the wheels are hidden and unable to see the wheels. The bottom surface of theluggage 120 has aclosing mechanism 282, typically a zipper or one lock in each side except one side for a hinge and the lid of theluggage 280. - When the wheels are hidden and moved to be exposed the wheels push the flaps to be opened while they are exposed.
- Each flexible rubbers flaps has attached at the end a metal or
hard material strip FIG. 10 g andFIG. 10 h. - The wheel system has at least three

1. A wheeled bag system comprising:
a bag, having handle and wheel system ends;
a handle at the handle end;
a shuttle-exterior knob lock proximal to the wheel system end, the lock having a first and second position-control plate, the first and second position-control plate movable between exposed and hidden positions, a lock housing with a knob plate parallel to a pulley plate, the knob and pulley plates separated by first and second side plates, the first and second side plates parallel to each other, and perpendicular to the knob and pulley plates, the knob plate attached to a lateral surface of the bag;
a plug channel defined within the knob plate, the plug channel running longitudinally from the wheel system end to the handle end, the plug channel having a hidden-position enlargement at the channel end proximal to the handle end, and an exposed-position enlargement proximal to the wheel system end;
a pulley channel defined within the pulley plate, the pulley channel running longitudinally from the wheel system end to the handle end;
first and second side plate channels defined within the first and second side plates, respectively, the first and second side plate channels running longitudinally from the wheel system end to the handle end, wherein the first and second position-control plates exit lock housing via the first and second side plate channels, respectively;
a knob pin having plug and pulley ends, the pulley end exiting the pulley channel allowing the pulley end to slide along the pulley channel;
a retain ring fixed on the knob pin proximal to the pulley plate end;
a retain ring washer abutting the retain ring distal to the pulley end, the retain washer rotatable around the knob pin;
a spring abutting the retain ring washer, the spring wrapped around the knob pin, whereby the knob pin receives tension drawing the knob pin toward the pulley end of the knob pin;
a plug fixed to the plug end of the knob pin, wherein the plug is too large to fit into the plug channel and the plug is too small to not fit both the hidden-position and exposed position enlargements of the knob plate;
a knob fixed to the plug, distal to the knob plate, wherein the knob does not fit within the hidden-position and exposed position enlargements of the knob plate;
a shuttle, disposed within the lock housing, the shuttle having a rectangular bar shape whereby the shuttle slides smoothly within the lock housing, the shuttle having parallel first and second faces, parallel first and second sides, wherein the first and second faces are perpendicular to the first and second sides, and parallel first and second ends perpendicular to the first and second faces and the first and second sides, the shuttle further having knob-pin aperture defined therein whereby the knob pin passes through the first and second faces, a rectangular-bar hollow defined therein whereby the first and second position control plates enter the first and second sides, first and second position control plate pins inside the rectangular-bar hollow rotatably attaching the first and second position control plates to the shuttle; and
a wheel system at the wheel system end, the wheel system having a housing for receiving at least two wheels, the wheels attached to the position-control plate of the lock, whereby moving the position control plate to the exposed position moves the wheels from the housing to expose the wheels, and moving the first and second position control plates to the hidden position moves the exposed wheels to hide the wheels in the housing.
2. The wheeled bag system of claim 1 , further comprising:
First, second, third and fourth bifold wheel covers, for the first, second, third and fourth wheels respectively, the bifold wheel covers having first and second flaps attached to an edge of the wheel opening, whereby the flexible rubber reinforced at the end of the flap or spring hinge hold the flaps flush with the bottom of the bag when the wheels are in the hidden position, and when the wheels are moving to the exposed position the wheels push the flaps are moving to a perpendicular position to the bottom of the bag, thereby exposing the wheels.
3. A wheeled bag system comprising:
a bag, having handle and wheel system ends;
a handle at the handle end;
a shuttle-concealed lock proximal to the wheel system end, the lock having a first and second position-control plates, the first and second position-control plates movable between exposed and hidden positions, a shuttle concealed lock housing having first and second side plates with first and second side plate channels defined therein, the first and second side plates parallel to each other with the first and second side plate channels running longitudinally from the wheel system end to the handle end, wherein the first and second position-control plates exit the concealed lock housing via the first and second side plate channels, respectively;
first and second edges, respectively perpendicularly attached the first and second side plates, whereby the first and second edges attach the concealed lock housing to an interior surface of the bag,
a back plate perpendicular to and separating the first and second side plates;
a shuttle, disposed within the lock housing, the shuttle having a rectangular bar shape whereby the shuttle slides smoothly within the lock housing, the shuttle having parallel first and second faces, parallel first and second sides, wherein the first and second faces are perpendicular to the first and second sides, and first and second ends perpendicular to the first and second faces and the first and second sides, the shuttle further having a rectangular-bar hollow defined therein proximal to the first end, whereby the first and second position control plates enter the first and second sides, and first and second position control plate pins inside the rectangular-bar hollow rotatably attaching the first and second position control plates to the shuttle;
a lever attached to the second end of the shuttle by a lever pin, wherein the lever pin allows the lever and the shuttle to rotatably move from a parallel to a perpendicular position, the lever further having first and second dimples at a lever end distal to the attachment to the shuttle, whereby a user can grab the lever to pull or push the shuttle inside the lock housing, a cylinder catch cavity defined in the lever between the first and second dimples and the lever pin a cylinder catch mechanism with a cylinder spring in a cylinder case, the cylinder spring pushing a cylinder partially from the cylinder case whereby the cylinder engages and secures the lever via the cylinder cavity in a position parallel to the shuttle, placing the wheels of the bag in the hidden position, a magnet attracting plate on the lever, a magnet on the bottom of the bag, whereby the magnet and the magnet plate secures the lever in a position perpendicular to the shuttle, placing the wheels of the bag in an exposed position, and a lever lid covering the lever in the bottom of the bag, the lever lid removable so a user can move the lever to place the wheels in either exposed or hidden positions, whereby the lever lid covers the lever when the lever is not being manipulated; and
a wheel system at the wheel system end, the wheel system having a housing for receiving at least two wheels, the wheels attached to the position-control plate of the lock, whereby moving the position control plate to the exposed position moves the wheels from the housing to expose the wheels, and moving the position control plate to the hidden position moves the exposed wheels to hide the wheels in the housing.
4. The wheeled bag system of claim 3 , further comprising:
First, second, third and fourth bifold wheel covers, for the first, second, third and fourth wheels respectively, the bifold wheel covers having first and second flaps attached to an edge of the wheel opening, whereby the flexible rubber reinforced at the end of the flap or spring hinge hold the flaps flush with the bottom of the bag when the wheels are in the hidden position, and when the wheels are moving to the exposed position the wheels push the flaps are moving to a perpendicular position to the bottom of the bag, thereby exposing the wheels.
