  • BACKGROUND
  • The embodiments of the present invention satisfy the needs of having a lottery game that gives greater control over the odds and payout structures while increasing the appeal of a game for the casual gambler.
  • Information relevant to attempts to address these problems can be found in U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,186,463; 6,017,032; 6,386,975; 6,712,695; 6,887,152; 6,935,948; 7,347,776; 7,351,142; 7,442,122; 7,635,304; and 7,662,038; which are not admitted to be prior art with respect to the present invention by its mention in this Background Section. However, it is desirable to have a better device than is disclosed in the references.
  • Numerous types of lottery games exist. In the most common lotto-type lottery, the players chooses without replacement a plurality of numbers from a range of numbers. A common lotto-type lottery game is a lotto 6/49 or 6-from-49 based on a pari-mutuel share, where the numbers range from 1 to 49, and the pari-mutuel share is a calculation in which the total monies allocated to a prize category are divided by the total number of winners in that category. In the Instant Game-type lottery, the player purchases a scratch card, on which one or more areas covered by a substance that cannot be seen through but that can be scratched off. The player then scratches off the substance to reveal whether he won a prize.
  • The odds of winning a lottery are similarly calculated for several games. In a game in which a player picks n from N regular numbers, and picks 1 from M bonus ball numbers, the probability h of correctly selecting some of the winning numbers is calculated using the following equation:
  • h = ( n x ) ( N - n n - x ) ( N n ) regular numbers · ( M - ( M - 1 ) m ) M megaball numbers
  • The odds of winning a single combination are then found by taking the inverse of the probability, 1/h. The overall odds of winning any combination are found by adding all the individual probabilities and taking the inverse.
  • The present invention, which I call Rollover (or “Rollover n,” where n can either refer to the number of jackpots or first prizes, or to the number of winners allowed per jackpot), has a positive and significant effect on the odds. It is designed to give greater control over the odds and payout structures while increasing the appeal of a game for the casual gambler. In a single Rollover Game, a plurality of sets of winning numbers are drawn, against which a player then compares his numbers to see if he's won. This increases the numbers of “attempts” afforded by a single ticket as well as changing the odds in the gambler's favor. The present invention does not need to be a lotto-type lottery, but if it is a lotto-type lottery game, then the odds can be calculated as follows:
  • h j = ( j 1 ) · h 1 · ( 1 - h ) j - 1 h j = j · ( ( n x ) ( N - n n - x ) ( N n ) ( M - ( M - 1 ) m ) M ) · ( 1 - ( ( n x ) ( N - n n - x ) ( N n ) ( M - ( M - 1 ) m ) M ) ) j - 1
  • where a player picks n from N regular numbers, picks 1 from M bonus ball numbers, such that the h is the probability of correctly selecting x winning regular numbers and m bonus ball numbers. Again, the odds of winning a single combination are then found by taking the inverse of the probability, 1/h. The overall odds of winning any combination are found by adding all the individual probabilities and taking the inverse. For a straight pick game where there is no bonus ball pick, the equation simplifies to:
  • h j = j · ( ( n x ) ( N - n n - x ) ( N n ) ) · ( 1 - ( ( n x ) ( N - n n - x ) ( N n ) ) ) j - 1
  • Besides controlling the odds of winning and the number of chances to win per ticket, the payouts are certainly of concern as well, both for the player and for the state. Since it is not common knowledge exactly how the payout structures are currently determined, to illustrate how a Rollover Game works the next two examples use the standard prize values and divide them by the number of rollover jackpots.
  • Consider a Mega Millions® Game with a Grand Jackpot of $150 million dollars. In this game, players pick 5-from-59 and 1-from-46 (Table 1).

The left columns indicate the correctly chosen regular and bonus ball numbers, and the overall odds of winning any of the prizes is shown at the bottom. The columns with the heading “Original Game” show the Prize values and approximate odds if the game is played as it currently is, with one jackpot. There are 9 ways to win per ticket (i.e., match all 5 numbers and the bonus ball, match all 5 numbers but not the bonus ball, etc.). When the number of jackpots is increased to 3, i.e., “Rollover 3,” the odds of winning each combination get better, it turns out by the same factor as the number of jackpots used. For the purpose of comparison, the prize amounts have been reduced by the same factor. Some of the winning combinations have been removed since some of the new prize amounts fall below a minimum threshold value of $2 (established for practical reasons), leaving 7 ways to win. Taking the 7 remaining winning combinations times the number of chances to match against winning numbers (3) the player now has not 9 but 21 chances to win. When the jackpot count is increased to 10 (“Rollover 10”), these effects are even greater. Odds improve even further for each combination, and some winning combinations are lost as they fall below the $2 threshold, but there are now 50 chances to win. The examples of 3 and 10 jackpots are only examples. It is possible to pick any number of jackpots, and any threshold amount, and get a spectrum of these kinds of results.
  • If desired, payout structure can still include all 9 original prizes, in this case by reducing the threshold to $1. Rollover Jackpots increase overall odds of winning a prize if the same prizes are offered (Table 2).

  • Consider a straight pick game with a $150,000 grand jackpot, in which the player chooses 5 numbers from 1 to 37. With 3 (“Rollover 3”) and 5 (“Rollover 5”) jackpots the odds for any winning combination improve, some of which can be eliminated due to the decrease in payout value below the threshold, and the number of chances to win are increased (Table 3).

  • It is also possible to add a factor of safety (“safety factor”) to the game. In some lottery games, it is possible that a large jackpot win in the first week or two of play will deplete the game fund or cause it to go into the red. This can be avoided by subtracting an appropriate percentage from the original jackpot and keeping it in reserve. The reserve is subtracted from the revenues on an ongoing basis and accumulated. In one embodiment the reserve is maintained at a fixed percentage (e.g., 40%) of the jackpot. In another embodiment, the reserve is determined as a percentage of the first week's jackpot (e.g., 40%), and that absolute number is collected again each week until the jackpot is won and the game is reset (e.g., week 1 reserve=$23,600; week 2 reserve=2×$23,600; week 3 reserve=3×$23,600; etc.). Tables 4a-g shows examples with $1, $2, $5 and $10 tickets, for a few different factors of safety, in a 5-from-37 game with a single win and a single jackpot, for Rollover 2 and 5. Similar examples can be generated for other Rollover games, e.g., Rollover 10. Note that more than one person can have any particular given winning number.

  • Safety factors are not restricted to or limited to Rollover games. They can be used in any lottery game. For example, in a typical 5-from-37 game without a reserve, the percentage of the total payout if the jackpot is hit in the original game starts at 73% in the first week, and decreases to 63% if the jackpot is hit in the 4th week. With a safety factor of 40%, the percentage of the total payout if the jackpot is hit in the original game starts at 54% in the first week, and decreases to 47% if the jackpot is hit in the 4th week. If the same safety factors (0% and 40%) are applied to Rollover 5 (one win per ticket) without a reserve, the percentage of the total payout if the jackpot is hit in the original game starts at % in the first week, and decreases to % if the jackpot is hit in the 4th week. With a safety factor of 40%, the percentage of the total payout if the jackpot is hit in the original game starts at 42% in the first week, and decreases to 51% if the jackpot is hit in the 4th week. Examples of a 5-from-37 lottery (“Original Game”), and Rollover 2, 3, 5 and 10, for safety factors of 0% (Reserve=0) and one win per ticket, are shown in Table 5a-e. Examples of a 5-from-37 lottery (“Original Game”), and Rollover 2, 3, 5 and 10, for safety factors of 40% (Reserve 0) are shown in Table 6a-e. Examples of a 5-from-37 lottery (“Original Game”), and Rollover 2, 3, 5 and 10, for safety factors of 0% (Reserve=0) and ten prize levels with up to two wins per ticket, are shown in Table 7a-e. Examples of a 5-from-37 lottery (“Original Game”), and Rollover 2, 3, 5 and 10, for safety factors of 40% (Reserve 0) and ten prize levels with up to two wins per ticket, are shown in Table 8a-f; only the top jackpot is reduced by the factor of safety, such that lower prize levels are unaffected. The ‘Comb’ column (stands for combinations; also shown as a “#” column heading) indicates how many ways to win (1 or 2). Some prize levels were increased to raise appeal of prizes and ensure prize amounts were commensurate with odds of winning. Not all possible winning combinations are used in this example, as certain odds of winning are astronomically small. As above, more than one person can have any particular given winning number. The best results are achieved by keeping the safety factor below 60%.

  • SUMMARY
  • The embodiments of the present invention are directed to a method and/or system and/or apparatus that satisfies the needs set out in the Background section.
  • The embodiments of the present invention comprise a method of operating a lottery game, in which one ticket buys a chance to win a plurality of jackpots. In one embodiment, a game has a plurality of equal jackpots, and the same lottery number can win more than one of them. In one embodiment, a game has a plurality of equal jackpots, and the same lottery number can win only one of them. In one embodiment, a game has a plurality of unequal jackpots, and the same lottery number can win more than one of them.
  • The present invention also comprises embodiments in which each jackpot comprises one or more secondary prizes, i.e., second prize, third prize, etc. In one embodiment, a game has a plurality of equal jackpots, each jackpot comprises a plurality of prizes, and the same lottery number can win more than one prize. This embodiment can be further subdivided into cases in which a player can win multiple times but only within the same jackpot (e.g., first prize, third prize, and fourth prize); or the case in which a player can win multiple times but only once per jackpot (e.g., first jackpot second prize, second jackpot fifth prize, third jackpot first prize). These games can also be played with unequal jackpots. It is also possible to play a game wherein the jackpots are either equal or unequal, each jackpot comprises a plurality of prizes, but the player can win only once (Table 9).

  • The present invention can also be implemented through scratch cards. In one embodiment of the present invention, the ticket is a scratch card on which the number or combination of numbers are preprinted and concealed.
  • In one embodiment of the present invention, the total payout is specified for example at 10% of the total revenues from the ticket sales. Ten jackpots are specified for this particular game, so that each jackpot will be populated with one percent (10%/ten jackpots) of the total revenues from the ticket sales. There may be one winner or multiple winners per jackpot, depending on how many players picked the winning numbers. If $10,000,000 in fees are collected, then $1,000,000 in prize money will be distributed over 10 jackpots, wherein each jackpot is worth $1,000,000. Suppose the game uses a pari-mutuel share, where a pari-mutuel share is a calculation where the total monies allocated to a prize category are divided by the total number of winners in that category. Then if two people picked the winning numbers for a given jackpot, each winner receives $1,000,000/2.
  • In one embodiment of the present invention, the lottery game is a lotto 6/49 or 6-from-49 based on a pari-mutuel share. The invention in fact can be implemented using any combination of n-from-m where n<m.
