Our invention relates to cable reels intended for use in transportation and/or storage for holding cable or other heavy material susceptible of being woundthereon and has for its object to produce a structural metal reel of rigid and economical construction which may be readily assembled and disassembled.
Reels formed of sheet metal and structural shapes have been assembled heretofore, but they have developed weaknesses inherent in their various designs, more particularly because the fabrication required the welding of the parts together at the joints and while it is admitted that a weld may be stronger than the metal itself, weaknesses develop in the metal just outside the welds causing failure and collapse of the reel.
One of the objects of this invention is to con struct a reel in which all welding operations may be omitted at the points of heavy stresses thereby ensuring a reel that is strong and serviceable and one that incorporates the full strength of the metal. This provides a light construction with a maximum of strength.
The foregoing and other features of our invention will now be described in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification in which we have represented our apparatus in its preferred form, after which we shall point out in the claims those features which we believe to be new and of our own invention.

In the carrying out of our invention we provide a cable reel having a hub l0, drum H around which the material to be stored and/or shipped is wound or laid, two heads l2 adapted on their serve as the side-or lining plate of our reel. These plates are rolled into a special shape on the outer periphery as at 2|. I have shown this to be a double bend with the legs 22 substantially at right angles to the annular side of the plate 23, while the leg 2! is substantially parallel thereto. The
segmental plates may be secured together, by
means of a reinforcing channel 24.
Our reel heads are provided with a felloe, made of two interfitting shaped circular rims 30 and 3 I, so shaped that when they are secured together, by means .32, they will closely fit together with the shaped edge of the annulus 20 interposed therebetween.
This provides a strong and substantial rim for the reel to roll upon at the same time provides the necessary space to accommodate the required lagging or means for securing a covering.
Each head has a channel diameter 40 provided with a central hole in which is secured a hub 4|; a ring 42 fills the opening between the legs 43 of the channel and the hub 4i. i
In Figure 1 it will be observed that the annulus v2|), on its inner edge, fits between the flange 44 of the drum II and a flange 45 of the annular ring 46. The assembly may be completed with bolts 50 extending through the entire reel or short belts or rivets may be used just to hold the three pieces, 44, 20, 45 together.
In Figure 3 in which we show a modification which we may employ, the drum I l is cylindrical without any end flanges, and the inner edge of the annulus is flanged as at 29. With this construction the drum fits in between the flange 29 and the angle 46. The felloe is also of somewhat modified form. The two interfitting rims 30, 3| fit tightly around theshaped rim of the annulus 20 but the outer edges are flanged outwardly.
Figures 4 and 5 present slightly different modi-' fications of the invention as described above.
We wish it distinctly understood that our reel herein described and illustrated is in the form in which we desire to construct it' and that changes or variations may be made as maybe convenient or desirable without departing from the salient features of our invention and we therefore intend the following claims to cover such modifications as naturally fall within the lines of invention.
We claim:
1. A new article of manufacture comprising a cable reel having heads including a side or lining plate of annular form the outer edge of which is shaped to fit between interfitting rims of a felloe, a felloe comprising two interfitting rims secured together with a shaped portion of the annulus interposed therebetween, a drum, an angular member bent up into a ring, the drum, ring and annulus secured together.

4. The device of claim 1, including a hub mounted in a channel member located as a diameter of the reel head.
