Description

1935- A. WATSON 2,010,502 I BOTTLE STOPPER Fiied March 12, 1954 IN V ENTOR.
M 4 V TORN UNITED STATES BOTTLE PATENT OFFICE STOPPER Lorin A. Watson, Auburn, Ind., assignor to Auburn Metal Products Company, a corporation of Indiana Application March 12,
Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in bottle stoppers for use in reclosing a bottle after the original sealing cap therefor has been removed and the bottle partially emptied. An object of 5 the invention is to provide a. stopper for reclosing a bottle and for conveniently securing the stopper in the bottle opening. Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the invention applied to a bottle; 7
Fig. 2 is a side elevation projected from Fig. 1, the showing of the bottle being fragmentary; and
Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line :1::c of Fig. 1, a portion of the bottle being omitted.
The illustrative embodiment of the invention consists of a handle I formed of a metal slide having shaped at one end thereof a claw 2 and a fulcrum point 3 spaced apart from each other suitably for use in removing an ordinary seal cap from a bottle as in the usual practice. The slide 4 has pendent arms 5 extending from its sides, the lower ends of which are inturned and constitute claws 6 between which the neck I of a bottle 8 is adapted to be clasped beneath the bead 9 thereon when the slide 4 is positioned over the top thereof and moved transversely with respect to the axis of the bottle.
The slide [has made therein a longitudinally extending slot l0 through which loosely extends a stud H so as to have sliding movement from one end of the slot to the other. The stud has secured thereon an element l2 disposed against the under side of the slide 4 having a concentric pendent sleeve 13 constituting a spacer. Also, the stud has secured on its lower end beneath the spacer a washer l4 that constitutes an anchor upon which is secured a stopper l5 preferably formed of resilient rubber and conically shaped so that when pressed into the opening in the bottle and against the top of its neck the bottle opening is sealed thereby.
In use, the element l2 together with the stopper I5 is moved to the rear end of the handle by' manipulating the stud II and the stopper is inserted in the bottle opening at the same time the claws 6 are positioned so that upon subse-i 1934, Serial No. 715,166
quent backward movement of the handle the claws are drawn astride of the bottle neck beneath the bead 9, causing pressure of the slide 4 downward upon said element so the stopper is secured in closed relation with the bottle.
I claim:
1. An implement of the class described consisting of a handle formed of a slide having pendent arms extending from its sides provided with inturned claws adapted to clasp therebetween the neck of a bottle beneath the bead thereon, said slide having an elongated longitudinally disposed slot, a stud loosely extending through the slot so as to have movement from one end of the slot to the other, an element disposed against the under side of the slide provided with a pendent spacer through which said stud extends, an anchor on said stud beneath the spacer, and a resilient stopper secured on said anchor'adapted to be held in sealing relation with the opening of said bottle when the neck of said bottle is clasped between said claws.
2. An implement of the class described consisting of a handle formed of a slide having pendent arms extending from its sides provided with inturned claws adapted to clasp therebetween the neck of a bottle beneath the bead thereon, said slide having an elongated longitudinally disposed slot, a stud loosely extending through the slot so as to have sliding movement from one end of the slot to the other, an element disposed against the under side of the slide on said stud, and a stopper in connection with said element and stud adapted to be held in sealing relation with the opening of said bottle when said handle is in clasping position on said bottle.
3. An implement of the class described consisting of a handle formed of a slide having pendent arms extending from its sides provided with inturned claws adapted to clasp therebetween the neck of a bottle beneath the bead thereon, an element operatively associated with said slide adapted to have longitudinal movement relative thereto, and a stopper as ociated with said element adapted to be held in sealing relation with the opening of said bottle when said handle is in clasping position thereon.
4. A bottle stopping device consisting of a slide having pendent members provided with inturned claws adapted to clasp therebetween the neck of a bottle beneath the bead thereon, an element in connection with said slide having limited movement longitudinally with respect thereto, and a stopper associated with said element adapted to be held in sealing relation with the bottle opening when said slide is positioned in clasplng relation with the bottle.
5. A bottle stopping device consisting of a slide having pendent members provided with inturned claws adapted to clasp therebetween the neck of a bottle beneath the bead thereon, and a stopper connectedly associated with said slide to have sliding movement respecting the slide to a position between said claws and adapted to be held in sealing relation with the bottle opening when said slide is positioned in clasping relation with the bottle.
