This invention relates to hectograph bands of the type employed in hectograph machines.
A particular object of the invention is to provide a hectograph band which is extremely long so that when it is used in a hectograph machine, it will not be necessary to replace it frequently with a fresh band.
Heretofore, relatively short hectograph bands have been employed in hectograph machines and in those instances where the machine was in substantially constant use, it was necessary to remove the hectograph band from the machine after its surface had been used once. The used band was then placed in storage until the anilin ink on its surface had disappeared into the gelatin. As these rolls are relatively heavy and are moist and somewhat tacky, the hands and clothes of the operator were often smudged with the copying ink.
By providing a multiple hectograph band comprising a plurality of individual bands detachably secured to each other, many objections to the use of hectograph machines are overcome.
It will be readily understood that if an individual band becomes damaged or otherwise unfit for use, it may be replaced. This is advantageous as the individual bands may be made relatively short, if so desired, and therefore, if an individual band becomes unfit for use there will be relatively little loss when it is removed from the multiple band.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent as the following detailed description progresses, reference being had to the accompaning drawing, in which Fig. 1 is an elevational view showing a spindle constructed in accordance with the present invention, having secured thereto a length of flexible material;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially through the center of the spindle shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing improved means for detachably securing the ends of flexible material; and
Fig. 4 is a plan view showing a length of material with a modified form of opening.
This application is a division of my co-pending application, Serial No. 565,508 filed September 1 28, 1931.
The spindle shown in Figures 1 and 2 is formed of a tubular or body portion l0 having hubs l2 formed on the respective ends providing flat projecting studs l4 adapted for insertion in journalling means. Spindles of the above type are (Cl. ll-31.5)
used in hectograph machines and have wound upon them lengths of flexible material which form the duplicating surface for the machines. It is desirable that the ends of the material may be easily and conveniently secured to the spindle 5 as it is often necessary to remove a worn duplicating band and replace aclean band.
In accordance with the present invention the body portion H! of the spindle is provided with a plurality of spaced slits so as to form sections 10 I6 which may be depressedout of the plane defined by the circumference of the body portion. Certain of these sections retain their arcuate concave formation, alternate sections Hi, however, being depressed into a substantially concave shape, This construction provides a passageway extending longitudinally of the body portion having suificient width and length to receive a removable key l8 formed of a flat strip of celluloid or other suitable material. Preferably the key is formed of a material so that the same has greater rigidity than the flexible material adapted to be secured to the spindle. Also, it is desirble to form the key of a flat strip since this form provides rigidity and strength in one direction while being quite flexible in the other direction, facilitating insertion in the passageway.
The means provided by which the flexible hectograph bands can be detachably secured together or to a spindle constructed as described is best understood by reference to Figure 3, which shows a length of material 20 having .one of its ends overlapping the end of a length of material 1 22. Slits 24 are located in spaced relation transversely of the end and are so positioned that the slits coincide with those formed in the end of the associated length of material. By depressing alternate sections formed by the spaced slits out of their normal plane a passageway can be formed for receiving the removable key 26. As described this type of key is also of flat formation and may be constructed of celluloid or other suitable material. The relation of the key with respect to the ends of the flexible material is such that the ends are securely fastened together and since the flattened side of the key is parallel with the surface of the material a rigid and strengthened joint results. In much the same manner the duplicating band 30, having formed in its end the spaced slits 32, can be detachably secured to the spindle by means of the removable key l8.
In Figure 4 a modified form of opening is shown comprising the square openings 34. The
material adapted to be secured to 36 is of course also provided with square openings positioned with respect to the margins of the material and so spaced as to coincide with openings 34 when the ends are overlapped. In the same manner as described a removable key can be threaded through the openings to detachably secure the respective lengths of material togetherr It is to be understood that I do not wish to be 10 limited by the exact embodiment of the device shown, which is merely by wayof illustration and.
not limitation, as various and other forms of the device wil1 of course be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of 15 the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. A multiple hectograph band comprising a plurality of individual entirely flexible hectograph bands, said individual bands being provided with means for detachably connecting them to each other.
2. A multiple hectograph band comprising a plurality of individual entirely flexible hectograph bands, and means for detachably connecting the bands to each other.
3.A multiple hectograph band comprisinga plurality of individual entirely flexible hectograph bands, and entirely flexible means for detachably connecting the bands to each other.
