This invention relates to clamping devices and more particularly to an adjustable clamp or holder for use in holding round or other shaped objects against turning.

An object of this invention is to provide a holder of this type which is designed particularly for use in holding jars while tightening or loosening the cap or closure for the jar, the device being so constructed as to readily conform to the configuration of the jar.

Another object of this invention is to provide in a device of this kind means whereby the device may be readily adjusted to different sizes of articles and which will retain its adjustment so that it may be used for a number of objects of the same size without re-adjustment.

A further object of this invention is to provide in a clamping device of this type a flexible clamping band which may be adjusted as to size and which will be locked in adjusted position by movement of the device into a clamping position about an article.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a device of this kind which is exceedingly simple in construction so that it may be readily and cheaply manufactured and so that it will embody as few parts as possible, thus rendering the device practical and preventing the device from getting out of order readily.

The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:

Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of a device constructed according to an embodiment of this invention, showing the device in applied position;

Figure 2 is a similar view partly broken away and partly in section of the device in released position;

Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan view of the device.

Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the views, the numeral It! designates generally a handle of suitable construction which is provided at one end with a clamping head II and at the other end with a screw eye l3 so that the device may be readily mounted on a support. This head I l is provided on its forward side with an arcuate portion 12, and one end of an adjustable clamping band [4 is secured as by securing means l5 to the head II at one end of the arcuate portion l2. The other end of the clamping band [4 is free and is threaded through an opening 16 provided in a band clamping plate IT. This plate 17 is provided with ears l8 engaging the opposite sides of the head ll.

These ears i8 are pivotally secured as by a pivot member [9 to the head I I, so that the band locking member I 7 may rock relative to the head I! for either locking the band i4 against movement or freeing the band M so that the band I4 may be adjusted to receive the article which it is desired to clamp. Preferably the locking member I! is limited in its rocking movement by means of a stop pin 20 secured to the head I on one side thereof adjacent the rear edge of at least one ear iii.

In the use of this device, the band I4 is initially pulled out of the opening l6, so that it will loosely receive the object which it is desired to clamp therein. This object may be either round, square or of any other suitable configuration and the band 4 is then disposed forwardly of the head II and out of engagement with the arcuate portion l2. Rocking movement of the handle Ill so as to swing the arcuate portion [2 toward the object will have a tendency to reduce the size of the loop initially formed by the band I4 so that this rocking movement will tightly clamp the band l4 about the object. The cap may then be removed from the jar or object with the handle l being grasped in one hand and the cap in the other hand. The rocking of the handle III will swing the locking member [1 toward the adjacent edge of the head II and thereby firmly hold the free end of the clamping band l4 against movement relative to the locking member ll. The object engaged by the band l4 may be released by swinging the handle |0 away from the object so as to increase the size of the initially formed loop of the band [4.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that an exceedingly simple clamping means has been designed which may be used to hold jars or other objects against turning, the objects being held by one hand while the desired cap or other article may be removed or mounted on the article. This clamping means will permit the placement of screw caps or the like on jars which have relatively hot contents so that the jar may be conveniently held against turning without burning the hand.

What is claimed is:-

1. A jar holder, comprising a handle, a head member secured to the handle, a clamping band, means for securing one end of the clamping band tosaid head, and releasable locking means cara pair of ears integral with the plate and disposed one on each side of the head, means engaging the ears and the head to pivotally secure the ears on the head, said band having a free end threaded through the slot of said plate and adapted to engage an edge of the slot whereby swinging of the handle and the head in the direction of the article will effect swinging of the plate toward the head to tighten the band about the article while simultaneously locking the band against movement with respect to the head.

2. A jar, holder, comprising a handle, a head secured to the handle, said head being provided with a curved forward face, a clamping band, means for securing one end of said clamping band to said head at one end of said curved face portion, a slotted locking plate, a pair of ears integral with said plate and engaging the opposite sides of the head, means for pivotally securing said ears to said head, the free end of said band being threaded in the slot of the plate in a manner whereby swinging of the handle and the head in the direction of the article will tighten the band about the article while simultaneously locking the band against movement with respect to said head.
