3 Claims.
This invention relates to a closing and sealing device.
In the manufacture of containers, cartons and the like from cellulose sheet, cellulose acetate 5 base material and other forms of transparent material, the closing and sealing of the cover is slow and unsatisfactory when manually done. The material is elastic and relatively stiff in the gauge required for containers. These characteristics make the closing and sealing difficult.
One of the objects or" this invention is to provide a device that will automatically close and seal a container or carton.
Another object of the invention is to provide li a simple mechanism whereby cartons made from cellulose acetate base and other transparent materials such as regenerated cellulose may be closed and sealed in the form of a container.

In carrying out our invention, I provide a standard I having a cutout central portion 2. Brackets 3, 8', 8", are secured to standard 9. The base 5 is secured by springs S to bracket 8. Studs l are adjustable to limit the height of base 5 with respect to bracket 8 to accommodate variation and height of containers. A plate 3 has lug 9 operating through cutout central portion 2 in standard I. A pivot pin II is carried by lug 9. Arm I2 is secured to standard I. Bell crank lever I3 is pivotally secured by pivot I4 to arm I2. The lower arm of bell crank lever l3 has a U-shaped groove for pivot I I whereby when bell crank lever I3 is rocked plate 3 is moved up and down. A spring I5 is secured to the lower end of bell crank lever I3 and to pin I6 which latter is threaded into standard I. Two rods I? are threaded through standard I at the top thereof. Yokes I8 are journaled on rods I1 and carry the sealing container and sealing mechanism. The latter comprises a box I9 containing a wick or absorbent material 20. Protruding from box I9 are portions 21 of wick or absorbent material of the size and shape required for the sealing of the cover. Container I9 is fed from a source of supply by flexible hose 22. The sealing material in box 59 is preferably under. predetermined pressure (predetermined gravity head or predetermined pneumatic pres-- 5 sure upon the source ofsupply) to control the amount of sealing material that is applied. By forcing the sealing material through an absorbent material not only is the amount of sealing material applied controllable but also a reduction in oxidation takes place thereby preventing clogging. The sealing material is further controlled by plate 29, the position of which can be varied by screw 3?]. If the plate is lowered it reduces the flow by constricting the absorbent material. This furnishes an additional method of controlling the quantity of sealing material applied. Box 19 is connected by bent lever 23 to hand operating lever 24. Hand operating lever 24 is connected to die 25. Die 25 is heated either by electricity as shown or by steam and has the forming dies 2? which may be of felt or other material. The device is adapted for closing containers having one open side. Container 25 is pivotally secured to standard I by hinges 28. The operation of the device is as follows:
The filled carton or container 4 is placed in brackets 8, 8, 8", as shown in Figure 5. Any adjustment for the height of the container is made by the adjustment of studs 1. The position of the container and of the elements will then be as in Figure 5. Hand lever 24 is then pulled down causing box I9 to be drawn toward standard I and the tabs or portions 2| apply the sealing material to the desired parts of the cover flap of the container 4, bell crank lever I3 having raised slide 3 to form a bearing support for the cover flap of container 4. As lever 24 is raised it leaves bell crank lever I3 permitting spring l5 through lever I3 and lug 9 to lower sliding plate 40 3 to permit die 25 to fold over cover flap of container 4 and press same down upon container 4 at the same time heating the flap so that the sealing material will properly seal the flap.
Although we have shown the device sealing one container, it may be made in multiple whereby three or four containers may be sealed simultaneously.
t will thus be seen that we have provided a closing and sealing device of simple construction 5 for closing and sealing containers made from transparent material.
What we claim is:
1. In a sealing device, a standard, means for supporting a container, said supporting means adjustable as to height, a sliding plate, means for 2. In a sealing device, a standard, means for supporting a container, said supporting means adjustable as to height, a sliding plate, means for applying sealing material, supports for said sealing applying means, means for sliding said sealing applying means on said supports to and from the cover of said container, means for coincidentally sliding said sliding plate to support the cover when said applying means is moved toward the standard, a closing die for closing the cover onto said container, means for withdrawing aid sliding plate to permit said closing die to bend said cover and press same onto said container, and means for heating said closing die.

In a sealing device, a standard, means for supporting a container, sliding means for applying sealing material to the cover of said container, a sliding plate carried by said standard, a closing die carried by said standard, said sealing means connected by a pivoted link to said closing die, a pivoted lever supported by said standard for motivating said plate, a lever carried by said closing die, said closing die lever when rocked in one direction rocking said sliding plate through said pivoted lever to support the cover of said container during the application of the sealing material and coincidentally therewith drawing said sealing means to contact with said cover and when rocked in the opposite direction releasing said pivoted lever to permit; the withdrawal of said sliding plate from its sealing position and moving said sealing mechanism away from said HARRY GERSTEIN.
