IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOWS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,907, dated March 5, 1878; application filed January 31, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE H. GERKEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Window, of which. the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved window; and Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical transverse and horizontal sections of the same, respectively, on line :0 x and y y, Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention is intended to so improve the construction of windows for buildings of all kinds that the sashes may be cleaned without removing them, and without bending or getting to the outside of the window, so that the danger, especially in high buildings, of falling out of the window in cleaning them is entirely obviated.

The invention consists of the window-sash being centrally pivoted to end strips, so as to be turned on the pivots and cleaned at both sides, the joints of sash or sashes and end strips being covered by face-strips, of which the lower front halves are hinged or otherwisle removable to allow the swinging of the sas Referring to the drawing, A A are the slidingsashes,andBthecasingof awindow. Both the upper and lower sashes are preferably hung centrally to end strips G, that slide with the sashes in the usual guide-strips of the window-casing B. The joints of the lower sash and its end strips are covered by somewhat larger faoe-strips D of the casing, those of the upper sash and its end strips by projecting guide-strips D, that extend from the middle of the height of the window to the top, the lower half of the guide-strips being of less thickness, so as to be in line with the edge of the sash, and out of the way when the upper sash is lowered and turned for cleaning.

The face and guide strips D D prevent the sashes from swinging on their pivots when being moved up and down. The lower half of the face-strips D is hinged to the casing B, or made removable, being attached by catches, fastening-screws, or in any other manner, so as to be swung or taken out of the way of the sashes when they are to be cleaned. The lower sash is first washed on one side; then, after the hinged face-strips are swung out of the Way, tilted on the pivots, as shown in Fig. 2, and then cleaned in the most convenient manner on the other side. The lower sash is then raised, and the upper sash lowered and cleaned in the same manner, the whole being accomplished without bending out of the window and being in the least exposed to danger, forming thus a window construction that is specially adapted for hotels, tenement-houses, and high buildings generally.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a window-casing having lower hinged or detachable face-strips, of sashes thatare pivoted to guided end strips, so as to be swung into convenient position for cleaning, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with sashes hung by pivots to guided end strips, of upper guidestrips and of lower hinged or detachable strips, that cover the joints of sashes and end strips, and prevent their swinging when being moved up or down, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
