Description

y 1935- J. HERLY VEGETABLE PEELER Filed April 4, 1954 srras FFIQE VEGETABLE PEELER JackHerly, Milwaukee, Wis.
Application April 4, 1934, Serial No. 718,943
3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in vegetable peelers and refers more particularly to paring and peeling knives, in which the cutting edge is provided by a safety razor blade detach- 5 ably held in place.
It is an object of this invention to provide simplified means for securing the blade in position.
Another object of this invention is to provide a paring and peeling device of the character described, wherein the blade is fiexed longitudinally and its normal resiliency is utilized to hold the blade retaining means in position.
And a further object of this invention is to provide a paring and peeling device of the character described in which the. cutting edge of the blade is exposed by a slot cut into the holding member at the corner of two meeting surfaces thereof, and in which the corner defined by the two meeting surfaces affords a positive stop to definitely locate the cutting edge of the blade with respect to the side edges of the slot.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds,
my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles and in which:
thereof,
Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of a peeling and paring knife embodying this invention, completely assembled and ready for use;
Figure 2 is an enlarged cross section view through Figure 1 on the plane of the line 2-2;
and
Figure 3 is a perspective yiew of the device with its several elements disassambled.
one end of which a blade holder 6 projects.
The
holder 6 is formed from a single piece of stiff sheet metal bent longitudinally to provide two angularly disposed walls I and 8, the angle between the walls being slightly greater right angle.
than a The wall 1! is relatively narrow and provides a flat guard surface, while the other wall 8 is wider than a conventional two edged razor blade and is curved longitudinally to provide a curved blade supporting surface. 5
The corner 9, formed by the juncture of the two walls l and 3, is cut away by a slot ill throughout a portion of its length, to afford access to the cutting edge ll of a razor blade i2, held against the inner face of the curved supporting wall 8. The slot it] is shorter than the blade l2, so that the ends of its cutting edge may engage the corner 8, as shown in Figure 1.. In this manner, the cutting edge of the blade is definitely located with respect to the side edges l5 it of the slot tothus determine the depth of the cut.
The blade 52 is held in place against the inner face of the curved supporting wall 8 by a retainer I 4 curved longitudinally to correspond to the curvature of the wall 8 and provided at its outer ends with attaching lugs E5. The attaching lugs l5 are bent rearwardly to be disposed substantially perpendicular to the major axis of the retainer I l and are adapted to be passed through openings iii in the blade, for engagement in openings H in the wall 3.
The openings l? are shaped somewhat like keyholes with wide and narrow portions 58 and i9 respectively, and the attaching lugs 55 are substantially T-shaped with wide outer ends and narrow necks 2B. The relative sizes of the lugs and the openings H are such that the wide portions of the lugs may be passed through the wide portions it of the openings and upon longitudinal shifting of the retainer toward the handle 5, the necks 2H of the lugs will enter the narrow portions l 9 of the openings to secure the retainer and consequently the blade against fiatwise movement away from the inner face of the wall 8. 40
. Inasmuch as the wall 8 is longitudinally curved, it is evident that the blade I 2 must be flexed longitudinally to permit locking engagement of the retainer lugs in the openings ll. Through this fiexure of the blade, the normal resiliency thereof is utilized to frictionally hold the retainer in its operative position.
During use, the peelings removed from the vegetable or fruit, pass through the slot ll up and over the front of the blade, as will be readily apparent.
To remove the blade, it is only necessary to slide the retainer away from the handle and align the lugs with the wide portions l8 of the openings, whereupon the retainer and the blade are readily removable.
The extreme outer end of the holder 6 is preferably pointed as at 2|, to provide means for digging into the vegetables to remove localized portions thereof.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, that this invention provides a novel peeling and paring device of general utility, and that it particularly ailords simple means for readily detachably securing a razor blade in position to provide the cutting edge therefor.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a vegetable peeling and paring device of the character described, a blade holder comprising a single piece of sheet metal bent longitudinally to provide two angularly disposed walls, both of said walls being cut away adjacent the corner formed by the juncture of said walls to provide a slot extending longitudinally of the holder, one of said Walls being curved longitudinally, a removable resilient blade longer than said slot overlying the inner face of said curved wall with the ends of its cutting edge engaging said corner beyond the ends of the slot and the medial portion of the cutting edge extending longitudinally across said slot, the other wall forming a guard lying wholly above the inner face of the blade, and a blade retainer overlying said resilient blade and detachably secured to the curved wall to hold the blade directly against the curved surfaces of said wall, whereby the blade is flexed and the resiliency thereof frictionally holds the retainer in its operative position.
2. In a vegetable peeling and paring device of the character described, a blade holder having substantially angularly disposed walls, one of which forms a guide surface and the other a support for a blade, the wall forming the support for the blade being curved longitudinally, and a portion of the corner formed by the juncture of said walls being cut away to define a longitudinal slot of a length less than a conventional safety razor blade, a flexible resilient safety razor blade overlying the inner face of said curved supporting wall with the end portions of a cutting edge thereof engaging the corner at the juncture of said walls, and means to readily detachably hold the blade against the inner face of said curved supporting wall with the blade correspondingly curved and under tension comprising a retainer having a portion arranged to overlie the blade, and an attaching lug adapted to pass through an opening in the blade for interengagement with an opening in the curved supporting wall, said attaching lug having a wide outer portion and a narrow neck and the opening in the supporting wall having wide and narrow portions, so that operative interengagement between the blade retainer and the supporting wall is effected by shifting the retainer with respect to the wall.
3. In a vegetable paring and peeling device, a handle, a blade holder on the handle and comprising a single piece of sheet metal bent longitudinally to provide two substantially angularly disposed adjacent walls, one of which is flat and slot and with the medial portion of said cutting edge extending longitudinally across the slot, and a readily detachable blade retainer overlying the inner surfacev of the blade and attached to the curved wall of the holder to detachably secure the blade to said curved wall flexed in correspondence to the curvature of said curved wall.
