IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED COLLAR AND HAMES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,710, dated February 26, 1878; application filed January 19, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN R. GoRBY, of Hiramsburg, in the county of Noble and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined Collar and Hames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference markedthereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a front view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same.

This invention has relation to horse-collars and hames; and it consists, mainly, in the construction and novel arrangement of the Wooden hame-sections within the collar, and covered by the incasement of zinc or leather, enveloping the whole, the slide-bars and the adjustable tugs thereon, the hinge secured to the upper ends of the hame-section, the pad underneath the same, fastened to one side of the collar only, and the spring-catch at the lower end, for securing the collar under the horses neck, all as hereinafter shown and described.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the collar-sections, which are of zinc or leather, studied with straw and pressed into form.

B B represent the hame-sections, made of wood and laid in the collar-sections, and covered either with zinc or leather in front, so as to be included within the general contour of the collar-sections. In this construction it is preferred to cover the collar-sections first, and press recesses into them to receive the hamesections, which are ,then faced with zinc or leather, the facing a being soldered or sewed to the covering b of the collar-section.

The fastenings at the top and bottom of the collar are attached to the wooden hame-sections. These, at their upper ends, are sawed off flush with each other, to receive the hinge b. Underneath this hinged portion the A- shaped pad 0, of zinc, is secured to one side of the collar, so that it will have a fixed and stationary position, whether the collar be open or closed.

D represents the slide bars, the ends of which are driven into the hame sections. Upon these bars are arranged the tugs c, which are capable of adjustment by sliding them up or down on the bars. Their adjustment is fixed by means of set-screws e passing through the barrels d of the tugs.

Gr represents the lower catch, whereby the sections of the collar are secured together under the horses neck. This catch consists of a tongue portion, t, which is secured to one of the hame-sections, and which is provided with a series of adjustment-holes, h, and a clasping part, k. This latter portion is formed by an upper plate, I, provided With an aperture, n, and a lower plate, 1), pivoted at 1' upon the lower edge of the hames, and having the general contour of the same in this portion. One end of this lower plate 1) is provided with a tooth, T, which is designed to pass through one of the perforations of the tongue t when the latter is inserted between the plates 1 and p. The other end forms a handle, and is supported in engagement by a spring, 8, in a recess, z, in the hame, into which this end of the plate is pressed when it is desired to disengage the tooth o from the tongue t, so as to open the collar-sections.

What 1 claim as my invention, and deslre to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combined collar and hames, consisting of the wooden hame-sections within the collar, and covered by the incasement of zinc or leather, enveloping the whole, the slide-bars and the adjustable tugs thereon, the hinge secured to the upper ends of the hame-section, the pad underneath the same, fastened to one side of the collar only, and the spring-catch at the lower end, said catch adapted to secure the collar, substantially as specified.
