Definitions
- the present invention relates to a hook coupling structure and a case using the same. More particularly, the present invention relates to a hook coupling structure for removably coupling molded materials and a case using the same.
- FIGS. 1 and 2 show a conventional structure for coupling components to each other by using a hook.
- a first component 1 which has been injection-molded, has a latching protrusion 3 formed thereon. Particularly, the latching protrusion 3 protrudes from one side of the first component 1 .
- a second component 5 which is coupled to the first component 1 , is provided with a hook 7 . Particularly, the hook 7 protrudes a predetermined distance from the second component so as to engage with the latching protrusion 3 .
- the hook 7 has a latching step 7 ′ formed on its leading end for engagement.
- the hook 7 is generally adapted to undergo elastic deformation to some degree so that, when the first and second components 1 and 5 are coupled to each other, the hook 7 is pushed and elastically deformed to a small degree by the latching protrusion 3 . Then, the hook 7 restores its original shape. As a result, the latching step 7 ′ engages with the latching protrusion 3 and causes the first and second components 1 and 5 to be coupled to each other.
- the latching step 7 ′ of the hook 7 engages with the latching protrusion 3 in the same direction as the leading end of the latching protrusion 3 protrudes. As a result, the volume of an inner space defined by the components 1 and 5 is reduced. This means that the engagement between the hook 7 and the leading end of the latching protrusion 3 makes it impossible to use the space between a surface of the first component 1 , on which the latching protrusion 3 is formed, and the hook 7 (the distance between them is D).
- the latching protrusion 3 and the hook 7 must be positioned on both sides of the inner space defined by the first and second components 1 and 5 , which are coupled to each other. This means that the width of usable space is reduced by 2D or more.
- a component cover is conventionally used to selectively seal a component seating space, which is defined inside the case.
- the component cover is elastically deformable so that it can be fastened to and removed from the case. If a large space is reserved for elastic deformation, the volume of the component seating space is undesirably reduced.
- an object of the present invention is to provide a hook coupling structure having a maximized inner space defined by components coupled to each other.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide a light, slim, and compact case.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide a case having an inner space which is opened/closed by a cover and which can be used to the fullest extent.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide a case having a cover which is adapted to open/close a space defined inside the case and which has a minimum thickness.
- a hook coupling structure for coupling first and second components to each other, the structure including a latching protrusion protruding from a surface of one of the first and second components and a hook protruding from other of the first and second components, a leading end of the hook engaging with the latching protrusion in a lateral direction relative to a protruding direction of the latching protrusion.
- a case including a first component; a component seating portion formed in the first component while being exposed to an outside, a component being seated on the component seating portion; a seating platform formed on an edge of an entrance of the component seating portion, the seating platform forming at least a part of an exterior of the first component; and a component cover for selectively covering the component seating portion, wherein the first component has an insertion hole and an insertion slot formed on a part corresponding to an edge of the component seating portion, the component cover has an insertion piece and a slide latching piece formed so as to be inserted into the insertion hole and the insertion slot, respectively, and the component cover has a seating protrusion formed so as to be removably seated into a fastening groove formed on the first component while being elastically deformed together with a periphery so that the component cover is fastened to the first component.
- the inventive hook coupling structure and the case using the same are advantageous in that the inner space defined by the components, which are coupled to each other by the hook, increases. This renders the exterior of the case light, slim, and compact.
- the component seating space which is defined inside the case and opened/closed by the component cover, in enlarged. The fact that the component cover has a minimized thickness renders the case light, slim, and compact.

- the inventive hook coupling structure and the case using the same have the following advantages.
- the hook coupling structure uses a minimum space to couple the hook and the latching protrusion to each other. This maximizes the inner space defined when components having hooks and latching protrusions are coupled to each other. As a result, the inventive hook coupling structure makes it possible to install a larger number of components in a space defined therein.
- the inventive hook coupling structure When the inventive hook coupling structure is used for a case, which shapes the exterior of an electronic device, the size of the contour of the case can be minimized while the inner volume remains the same. This renders the case light, slim, and compact. Therefore, when the case is used for a portable terminal, for example, the portability is improved.
- the planar portion of the component cover does not necessarily undergo elastic deformation when the cover is fastened/removed. This means that no gap is necessary between the component cover and the component. As a result, the volume of the component seating portion can be used to the fullest extent. This makes it possible to maximize the component capacity or render the case light, slim, and compact.
- the component cover may have a small thickness, because its planar portion is not subjected to force from the user when the component cover is fastened/removed. This maximizes the volume of the component seating portion. As a result, it is possible to maximize the component capacity or render the case light, slim, and compact.
- planar hooks 32 , the protruding hooks 35 , and the latching pieces 37 are positioned on the second component 30
- corresponding latching hooks 28 and 28 ′ and protrusions are positioned on the first component 20 in the illustrated embodiment
- the positioning is not limited to that in the present invention.
- the above elements may be positioned on the other component.
- they may be positioned on the first and second components 20 and 30 in various combinations.
- the present invention is applicable to all type of portable terminals, including portable telephones, PDAs, smart phones, PMCs, and PMPs.

Abstract
Disclosed is a hook coupling structure and a case using the same. The hook coupling structure for coupling first and second components 20 and 30 to each other includes a latching protrusion 28 protruding from a surface of one of the first and second components 20 and 30 and a hook 32 protruding from the other of the first and second components 20 and 30, a leading end of the hook 32 engaging with the latching protrusion 28 in a lateral direction relative to a protruding direction of the latching protrusion 28. The hook 32 has a planar overall shape, and the leading end has a latching step 33 formed on its lateral surface so as to engage with the latching protrusion. When the hook coupling structure is used for a case, the inner space defined by components, which are coupled to each other by the hook, increases. This renders the exterior of the case light, slim, and compact.
Description
- 1. Field of the invention
- The present invention relates to a hook coupling structure and a case using the same. More particularly, the present invention relates to a hook coupling structure for removably coupling molded materials and a case using the same.
- 2. Description of the Prior Art
- As generally known in the art, various means are used to couple injection molded materials to each other. For example, screws are used to couple components to each other. Alternatively, a hook and a latching protrusion, which are integrally formed on components, are used to couple the components to each other.
FIGS. 1 and 2 show a conventional structure for coupling components to each other by using a hook. - Referring to the drawings, a
first component 1, which has been injection-molded, has alatching protrusion 3 formed thereon. Particularly, thelatching protrusion 3 protrudes from one side of thefirst component 1. Asecond component 5, which is coupled to thefirst component 1, is provided with ahook 7. Particularly, thehook 7 protrudes a predetermined distance from the second component so as to engage with thelatching protrusion 3. Thehook 7 has alatching step 7′ formed on its leading end for engagement. - The
hook 7 is generally adapted to undergo elastic deformation to some degree so that, when the first andsecond components hook 7 is pushed and elastically deformed to a small degree by thelatching protrusion 3. Then, thehook 7 restores its original shape. As a result, thelatching step 7′ engages with thelatching protrusion 3 and causes the first andsecond components - However, the above-mentioned conventional structure for coupling components has the following problems.
- The
latching step 7′ of thehook 7 engages with thelatching protrusion 3 in the same direction as the leading end of thelatching protrusion 3 protrudes. As a result, the volume of an inner space defined by thecomponents hook 7 and the leading end of thelatching protrusion 3 makes it impossible to use the space between a surface of thefirst component 1, on which thelatching protrusion 3 is formed, and the hook 7 (the distance between them is D). - Particularly, when the first and
second components latching protrusion 3 and thehook 7 must be positioned on both sides of the inner space defined by the first andsecond components - Meanwhile, a component cover is conventionally used to selectively seal a component seating space, which is defined inside the case. In general, the component cover is elastically deformable so that it can be fastened to and removed from the case. If a large space is reserved for elastic deformation, the volume of the component seating space is undesirably reduced.
- In addition, it is necessary to maintain a minimum thickness of the component cover, which is fastened to or removed from the case by using elastic deformation, so that the component cover is neither damaged nor excessively bent by force applied by the user during the elastic deformation. However, such thickness requirement makes it difficult to render the case light, slim, and compact or maximize the volume of the component seating space.
- Accordingly, the present invention has been made to solve the above-mentioned problems occurring in the prior art, and an object of the present invention is to provide a hook coupling structure having a maximized inner space defined by components coupled to each other.
- In order to accomplish these objects, there is provided a hook coupling structure for coupling first and second components to each other, the structure including a latching protrusion protruding from a surface of one of the first and second components and a hook protruding from other of the first and second components, a leading end of the hook engaging with the latching protrusion in a lateral direction relative to a protruding direction of the latching protrusion.
- In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a case including a first component; a component seating portion formed in the first component while being exposed to an outside, a component being seated on the component seating portion; a seating platform formed on an edge of an entrance of the component seating portion, the seating platform forming at least a part of an exterior of the first component; and a component cover for selectively covering the component seating portion, wherein the first component has an insertion hole and an insertion slot formed on a part corresponding to an edge of the component seating portion, the component cover has an insertion piece and a slide latching piece formed so as to be inserted into the insertion hole and the insertion slot, respectively, and the component cover has a seating protrusion formed so as to be removably seated into a fastening groove formed on the first component while being elastically deformed together with a periphery so that the component cover is fastened to the first component.
- The inventive hook coupling structure and the case using the same are advantageous in that the inner space defined by the components, which are coupled to each other by the hook, increases. This renders the exterior of the case light, slim, and compact. In addition, the component seating space, which is defined inside the case and opened/closed by the component cover, in enlarged. The fact that the component cover has a minimized thickness renders the case light, slim, and compact.

In the following description and drawings, the same reference numerals are used to designate the same or similar components, and so repetition of the description on the same or similar components will be omitted.
- As shown in the drawings, a
first component 20, which acts as a frame constituting a case, has aninner space 22 defined therein. Theinner space 22 is delimited by abottom portion 24 and alateral wall portion 26 extending along the edge of thebottom portion 24. In the present embodiment, thefirst component 20 has the shape of a flat hexahedron. Thefirst component 20 has an opening formed on a surface (larger surface) thereof. Thebottom portion 24 may be a separate plate removably fastened to thefirst component 20. - The
lateral wall portion 26 has a number oflatching protrusions 28 formed on its inner surface. Thelatching protrusions 28 protrude forward from the inner surface of thelateral wall portion 26. The number and position of the latchingprotrusions 28 depend on the size of thefirst component 20. - In addition to the latching
protrusions 28, thelateral wall portion 26 may have another type of latchingprotrusions 28′ formed thereon. The shape of the latchingprotrusions 28′ may be modified in accordance with that of features coupled thereto (described later). - The
second component 30 is coupled to thefirst component 20 and seals theinner space 22. Thesecond component 30 acts as a front plate of the case, for example. When coupled to each other, the first andsecond components components components inner space 22 is defined in thefirst component 20 in the present embodiment, it may be defined in thesecond component 30. Alternatively, the inner space may be separately defined in the first andsecond components - The
second component 30 has planar hooks 32 formed so as to correspond to and engage with the latchingprotrusions 28. Eachplanar hook 32 has a latchingstep 33 formed on one side of its leading end. Particularly, the latching steps 33 are not positioned on a larger surface of the planar hooks 32, but protrude from one side of the leading end of their lateral surface. Preferably, at least the latching steps 33 extend parallel to the surface, on which the latchingprotrusions 28 are formed. Preferably, the entire planar hooks 32, including the latching steps 33, extend parallel to the surface, on which the latchingprotrusions 28 are formed. The planar hooks 32 preferably have a thickness equal to or smaller than the degree of protrusion of the latchingprotrusions 28 so that the planar hooks 32 do not protrude from the latchingprotrusions 28. - The planar hooks 32 engage with the latching
protrusions 28 in the lateral direction of the latchingprotrusions 28. Particularly, the planar hooks 32 do not engage with the leading ends of the latchingprotrusions 28 in the same direction as they protrude, but the latching steps 33 engage with the latchingprotrusions 32 in the lateral direction of the latchingprotrusions 28. - The
second component 30 has protruding hooks 35 constructed according to the prior art. The protruding hooks 35 have a latching step adapted to engage with the leading end of the latchingprotrusions 28′. - The
second component 30 has latchingpieces 37 formed thereon. Each latchingpiece 37 has a latching groove or latchinghole 37′ formed thereon so that a protrusion (not shown) formed on thefirst component 1 is inserted therein and fastened thereto. - According to the present invention, the conventional protruding hooks 35 and latching
pieces 37 may be properly combined so as to couple the first andsecond components second components second components pieces 37 may be properly arranged. - The operation of the inventive hook coupling structure, which is constructed as above, and a case using the same will now be described in detail.
-
FIG. 7 shows the first andsecond components second components - The latching steps 33, which are formed on one side of the leading end of the planar hooks 32, engage with the latching
protrusions 28 of thefirst component 20 in the lateral direction of the latchingprotrusions 28. After the engagement, the planar hooks 32 are positioned adjacent to or forced against the inner surface of thefirst component 20, particularly thelateral wall portion 26, as shown inFIG. 6 . In this condition, the planar hooks 32 do not protrude from the latchingprotrusions 28. - The fact that the planar hooks 32 do not protrude from the latching
protrusions 28 means that, when the first and second components are coupled to each other, the usable volume of theinner space 22 increases. - The first and
second components pieces 37 engage with the latchingprotrusions pieces 37 depend on the design requirement. For example, the planar hooks 32 or the latchingpieces 37 are used when a large volume is necessary, and the protruding hooks 35 are used otherwise. - As such, the planar hooks 32, the protruding hooks 35, and the latching
pieces 37 are properly combined and used to establish a case based on their characteristics, including the ratio of occupation in the inner space and fastening strength. - FIGS. 8 to 10 show a case according to another embodiment of the present invention. The
case 115 shapes the exterior of a portable terminal. Thecase 115 has the shape of a flat hexahedron, with its vertical width larger than the horizontal width when viewed from the front. In general, thecase 115 may consist of at least two components. In the present embodiment, thecase 115 has afirst component 120 acting as a framework and athird component 120′ mounted on thefirst component 120. For example, thefirst component 120 is the frame of thecase 115, and thethird component 120′ is a rear plate. It can be easily understood by those skilled in the art that the case according to the present embodiment is shown in the drawings from below. - A portion of the
first component 120, which corresponds to the rear surface of the terminal, is dented so as to form acomponent seating portion 122. Particularly, thecomponent seating portion 122 is formed by denting a portion the rear surface of thecase 115, which is adjacent to an end thereof, in the shape of a hexahedron. For example, a battery (not shown) may be seated on thecomponent seating portion 122 and supply the terminal with power. - The
component seating portion 122 has aseating platform 124 formed on a portion of its rim, which corresponds to the edge of thecase 115. The edge of a component cover 140 (described later) is seated on theseating platform 124. - The
component seating portion 122 has aninsertion hole 126 formed on at the center of the remaining portion of the rim (i.e. the portion which has no seating platform 124). In the present embodiment, theinsertion hole 126 is formed on thefirst component 120. Theinsertion hole 126 is open in the same direction as the component cover 140 (described later) is fastened/removed. - A stopping
platform 128 protrudes from an edge of theseating platform 124, which faces theinsertion hole 126 formed on thecomponent seating portion 122. The stoppingplatform 128 has aninsertion hole 128′ formed thereon. An insertion piece 145 (described later) is inserted into theinsertion hole 128′. Theinsertion hole 128′ is open in the same direction as thecomponent cover 140 is fastened/removed. - Protruding
ribs 130 protrude along the edge theseating platform 124, which corresponds to both ends of thecase 115. The protrudingribs 130 are elongated in the same direction as thecomponent cover 140 is fastened/removed. Aslide latching protrusion 130′ extends along the outer surface of eachprotruding rib 130. In the present embodiment, twoslide latching protrusions 130′ are formed on each protruding rib 130 (i.e. a total of four). However, the number of theslide latching protrusions 130′ is not limited to that in the present invention, and may be varied depending on the design requirement. Theslide latching protrusions 130′ extend along the lateral surface of the protrudingribs 130 and protrude in a direction perpendicular to the extension direction of theprotrusion ribs 130. - A part of each
slide latching protrusion 130′ is removed so as to form latchingslots 130″ between theslide latching protrusions 130′ and theseating platform 124. Slide latchingpieces 147 of a battery cover 136 (described later) are inserted into the latchingslot 130″. When viewed from the side of the case 115 (refer toFIG. 11 ), theslide latching protrusions 130′ have an approximately L-shape configuration, due to the latchingslots 130″. - The protruding
ribs 130 haveinsertion slots 131 formed so as to correspond to respective entrances of the latchingslots 130″ of theslide latching protrusions 130′ (refer toFIG. 11 ). Theinsertion slots 131 have a width large enough to enable the slide latching pieces 147 (described later) to pass through. - Each protruding
rib 130 has afastening protrusion 133 formed on a portion thereof, which corresponds to an end of thecase 115. Thefastening protrusion 133 has a curved surface, which corresponds to the leading end of the protrudingrib 130. Next to thefastening protrusion 133, each protrudingrib 130 has afastening groove 134 formed on its outer surface. A seating protrusion 150 (not shown) of thecomponent cover 140 is seated into and engages with thefastening groove 134. - The
component cover 140 selectively covers thecomponent seating portion 122. When mounted on thecase 115, thecomponent cover 140 covers thecomponent seating portion 122. Thecomponent cover 140 includes aplanar portion 141 having the shape of a square plate and alateral wall portion 143 enclosing the edge of theplanar portion 141 so as to correspond to theseating platform 124. - The
planar portion 141 has aninsertion piece 142 protruding from the center of an edge, on which thelateral wall portion 143 is not formed. Theinsertion piece 142 is inserted into theinsertion hole 126. Thelateral wall portion 143 has aninsertion piece 145 formed on its portion, which faces the edge having theinsertion piece 142. Theinsertion piece 145 is inserted into theinsertion hole 128′ formed on the stoppingplatform 128. Theinsertion pieces component cover 140 is fastened/removed. - The
lateral wall portion 143 hasslide latching pieces 147 formed on portions of its inner surface, which correspond to both ends of thecomponent cover 140. Theslide latching pieces 147 engage with theslide latching protrusions 130′. Theslide latching pieces 147 haveinsertion portions 148 inserted into the latchingslots 130″ of theslide latching protrusions 130′ and stoppingportions 149 formed on an end of theinsertion portions 148. Theslide latching pieces 147 have an approximately L-shaped configuration, as in the case of theslide latching protrusions 130′. - The
lateral wall portion 143 has seatingprotrusions 150 formed on its portions, which correspond to both ends of thecomponent cover 140, respectively. The seating protrusions 150 are seated into thefastening grooves 134. When theseating protrusions 150 climb and move past thefastening protrusions 133, they undergo slight elastic deformation together with thelateral wall portion 143. Preferably, the seatingprotrusions 150 have curved surfaces, which abut thefastening pieces 133, so that theseating protrusions 150 can easily climb and move past thefastening pieces 133. - The operation of the case of a portable terminal according to the present embodiment of the present invention, which is constructed as above, will now be described in detail.
- The
component cover 140 covers thecomponent seating portion 122, particularly, components seated thereon, and prevents them from escaping. Theinsertion pieces slide latching pieces 147 engage with theslide latching protrusions 130′, so that thecomponent cover 140 is not separated from thecase 115. Although theinsertion pieces pieces 147 cannot prevent thecomponent cover 140 from moving towards an end of thecase 115, they can prevent thecomponent cover 140 from escaping towards the top of the component seating portion 112 or moving in the lateral direction. - The
component cover 140 is fixedly mounted on thecase 115 when theseating protrusions 150 move past thefastening protrusions 133 and are seated into thefastening grooves 134. Particularly, thecomponent cover 140 remains fixed to thecase 115 as long as theseating protrusions 150 cannot escape from thefastening grooves 134 unintentionally. - When the user wants to remove the
case 115 from thebattery cover 140 in this state, he slightly presses portions of theplanar portion 141 of thecomponent cover 140, which are adjacent to theseating protrusions 150. As a result, the periphery of those portions is elastically deformed so that theseating protrusions 150 can easily climb and move past thefastening protrusions 133. - When the user pushes the
component cover 140 towards the end of thecase 115, theinsertion pieces slide latching pieces 147 are separated from theslide latching protrusions 130′. Then, thecomponent cover 140 is separable from thecase 115. - A process for remounting the
component cover 140 on thecase 115 will now be described with reference toFIGS. 11 and 12 . - Once the
component cover 140 is separated from thecase 115 in order to replace or check a component inside thecomponent seating portion 122, thecomponent cover 140 is positioned above thecomponent seating portion 122 so as to cover it. However, thecomponent cover 140 does not completely cover thecomponent seating portion 124 in this condition, and a part of thecomponent seating portion 124, which is adjacent to theinsertion pieces 142, may be exposed. - As shown in
FIG. 11 , the seatingprotrusions 150 are adjacent to thefastening protrusions 133, and theslide latching pieces 147 are positioned so as to correspond to theinsertion slots 131. In this state, thelateral wall portion 143 of thecomponent cover 140 is moved along theseating platform 124, particularly along the arrow shown inFIG. 11 . - As a result of the movement of the
component cover 140, theinsertion portions 148 of theslide latching pieces 147 are inserted into the latchingslots 130″. In addition, theslide latching pieces 147 climb and move past thefastening protrusions 133 to be seated into thefastening grooves 134, while thelateral wall portion 143 of thecomponent cover 140 undergoes elastic deformation. - After the
insertion portions 148 are inserted into the latchingslots 130″ and the stoppingportions 149 engage with theslide latching protrusions 130′, thecomponent cover 140 stops moving, as shown inFIG. 12 . Theinsertion pieces component cover 140 is neither displaced nor separated from thecase 115 unintentionally. - As mentioned above, the inventive hook coupling structure and the case using the same have the following advantages.
- When the inventive hook coupling structure is used for a case, which shapes the exterior of an electronic device, the size of the contour of the case can be minimized while the inner volume remains the same. This renders the case light, slim, and compact. Therefore, when the case is used for a portable terminal, for example, the portability is improved.
- According to the present invention, the planar portion of the component cover does not necessarily undergo elastic deformation when the cover is fastened/removed. This means that no gap is necessary between the component cover and the component. As a result, the volume of the component seating portion can be used to the fullest extent. This makes it possible to maximize the component capacity or render the case light, slim, and compact.
- In addition, the component cover may have a small thickness, because its planar portion is not subjected to force from the user when the component cover is fastened/removed. This maximizes the volume of the component seating portion. As a result, it is possible to maximize the component capacity or render the case light, slim, and compact.
- Although a preferred embodiment of the present invention has been described for illustrative purposes, those skilled in the art will appreciate that various modifications, additions and substitutions are possible, without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as disclosed in the accompanying claims.
- For example, although the planar hooks 32, the protruding hooks 35, and the latching
pieces 37 are positioned on thesecond component 30, while corresponding latching hooks 28 and 28′ and protrusions are positioned on thefirst component 20 in the illustrated embodiment, the positioning is not limited to that in the present invention. For example, the above elements may be positioned on the other component. Alternatively, they may be positioned on the first andsecond components - In addition, the present invention is applicable to all type of portable terminals, including portable telephones, PDAs, smart phones, PMCs, and PMPs.
