According to rthe present invention the subi stancevwith'whichqthe ductile or foil sheet* is 10? backed is cast or moulded intoagframe to which thesaid sheet is permanentlyl secured.
'In\ carrying the preferred form of thisl inven 16 metal or metal ,m1, said sheet being of such dimensions" that yit overlaps all or the majority of lthe edges' of the-frame. AUpon the sheet is reproducedla photograph and the photograph is brought out intoy the desired relief by tooling 20 the-sheet to produce ridges and arcuate mounds andrecesse's therein. @Phe-marginal parts of the sheetfwhich'j'overlap `theframe are folded over the edges of the uframe on to theback of the frame;`the `corners of the sheet ify necessary being cuttojpermitof such ifolding. A suitable lling material"such,N asl for example a quick `setting gypsumfplaster or a cement is vdeposited in the frame so as'toflllup the space inside the frame behind the Ymetal or foil sheet up to4 the level ofthe Jfolded'over ends of4 the 'sheet where they lie lagains'tfthe' back of the frame, a suitable straightedge'levelling off kthe filling substance toenable asuitable back plate orpanel of wood or' other suitable material to be laid flush against the saidfolded over marginal part fofthe metal orfoill` sheet. -By` driving wood screws orznails through 'the said back plate into the said framel a'solid assembly is provided in which the boundarye'dgesv` of the finishediplaque are composed 4 ofthemetal sheet or'foil. lBy pressing in the said sheetalong lines bounded by the inner edges of thesaidframe during the tooling vor embossing operation an effect of a solid metal outer frame can be 'obtained the effect being enhanced by having a definite boundary or demarcation line for the picture or photograph at the folds or creasesof the thin metal or foil sheet extending along the inner edges of the frame. A method of and means for carrying the invention into effect is shown in the accompanying sheet of drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a sectional View showing the thin metal or foil sheet with the frame on to which it is to be secured laid thereon.

Upon the opposite side of the sheet is applied afcoating of cellulose or 'other suitable material' which will adhere tenaciously to the sheet. Sandor yother gritty material is incorporated with `this. coating kto provide a roughened surface whereby plaster or a plastic composition will adhere firmly to the backof the sheet.` The back of thesheet has laid upon it a rectangular or other suitably shaped wooden frame 2, the arrangement being thatA preferably all of the edges of the sheet l extendbeyond the outer edgesy of 4the frame 2` thereby providing a `surrounding margin 3 which as shown in Fig. 2 is folded over the outer edges and'rear face of ythe frame 2. This provides a" surround or edgewhich gives a thick metal effect. M
