The present invention relates to a receptacle forreceiving documents from a photographic reproducing machine and more particularly to a document receiving receptacle which is movable from a document receiving-. position to an inoperative position, and which is adjustable to various document receiving positions.

'In machines for reproducing. documents, the receptacle for the documents is most: generally aflixed to the machine and not capable of adjustment. Furthermore, reproducing machines for handling checks are oftentimes used inconjunction with a machine for endorsing the checks but, according to previous constructions, the checks must be manually handled or conveyed from the reproducing machine to the endorsing machine. l I W I The primary object of the present invention is the provision on a document reproducing ma chine of a document receptacle. whichis adjustable to various document receiving positions. I

Another object of the present invention is the provision on a document reproducing. machine of a member which may function as a support for the receptacle, or alternatively; as a shelf for an endorsing or similar machine.

A still further object of the inventio-nis the provision of a document receptacle which may be swung from an inoperative position into a document receiving po'sition and which may engage openings in a plate member on the front of the machine, said plate member being capa ble of at least two functions, one as a support for the receptacle whenin closed or upright position and the other as a shelf for an endorsing machine when the plate member is in open or horizontal position. Such a fastening means is preferably composed of a pair of bolts 24 which are provided with knurled heads 25 and which are threaded into the ledges 2|.

The plate member 20 is provided with a pluralityof openings which are successively spaced from the exit of the feeding means.

As best seen from Fig. 2, these openings consist of a pair of elongated, transverse slots 26 and a pair of square holes 21, which are all vertically spaced with respect to each other in said plate member 20. i

A brace means is connected to the plate member of the casing for the machine. Preferably the brace means comprises a pair of hinged braces which are pivotally connected between the casing and the plate member 20. Specifically a link 28 is pivoted to each side wall ill by a bolt 29 and a link 30 is pivoted to a lug 31 on the rear of plate member 20 by a bolt 32. The other ends of links 28 and 30 are pivotally connected by a bolt 33.

When the plate member is secured in the position shown in Fig. 1 by the fastening means or bolts 24, the brace means or plurality of hinged braces between the plate member and easing are not operative. However, upon removal of the fastening means, the plate member 29 may be swung downwardly in a clockwise direction to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. At the same time, the links 28 and 30 will be extended into a straight line position and will now function as supporting braces for the shelf now formed by the plate member 20.

In this open position of the plate member, access to the interior of the machine casing is provided. A plurality of supports 34 may be mounted on posts 35 above the bottom wall llof the casing. The supports 34 each have a supporting surface which is preferably in the plane of the plate member when that member is in open or horizontal position. For this reason, any machine, such as an endorsing machine, may be supported either by the plate member 20 or the supports 34. The outline of one commercial form of endorsing machine is indicated by dotdash lines in Fig. 1.

ports 34 and which rest upon the outer margin of plate member 20. An adapter 38 is mounted on the endorsing machine 36 for the purpose of conducting the documents or checks into the endorsing machine and a drawer 39 extends into the machine 36 to act as a receptacle.

The document receptacle is preferably constructed as a hopper having an end wall 40, a front wall 4|, a bottom wall 42 and an overhanging lip 43. For the purpose of rendering the documents in the receptacle more accessible, the front wall 4| of the receptacle is provided with a vertical slot 44. A pair of lugs 45 are afiixed to the bottom wall 42 of the receptacle and are pivotally connected by bolts 46 to links 41 which in turn are pivotally connected by bolts 48 to one side of the legs 12. As a result, the receptacle or hopper may be swung from the position shown by the full lines in Figs. 1 and 2 to the position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1.

The slots 2? are so dimensioned that the receptacle may be swung upwardly to disengage the teeth 5| from the upper edge of the slot and the receptacle may be moved pivotally either toward or away from the exit or the feeding means.

It is evident that in the position of the receptacle as shown in Fig. 1, checks passing through the feeding means will be discharged into the document receptacle. If documents which are wider than the checks are to be passed through the machine, then the document receptacle may be enlarged by swinging the support member 49 upwardlyand swinging the receptacle about the links 47 until other teeth 5! engage the upper edge of one of the slots 26. If only a small stack ofchecks or other documents are to be fed through the machine, the support member 49 may be removed from the lower slot 26 and inserted into theupper slot 26. Again if very long documents are going through the machine and it is desired to place the receptacle still nearer to the exit of the feeding means, the extreme teeth 5| on the support member 49 may be inserted into the square holes 2'! of plate member 29.

When it becomes desirable to endorse the checks passing through the feeding means of the machine, the document receptacle is raised to permit retraction of the support member 49 from the slots 26 or square holes 27 and the receptacle is swung downwardly into the inoperative position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The fastening means or bolts 24 are removed and the plate member 20 is swung into the open or horizontal position also shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. In this position of plate member 20, the hinged braces including links 28 and 35 are swung into straight line position to act as supports for the outer edge of the plate member. The endorsing machine 36 may now be inserted into the open end of the casing with its rear feet 31 resting on the supports 34 and with its front feet 31 resting on the outer portion of plate member 20. The checks are conducted by the adapter 38 directly from the exit of the feeding means to the endorsing machine and thence to the drawer 39.

Other modifications of the present invention may be accomplished without exercising invention so that the present disclosure is intended as illustrative. The scope of the invention is defined in the appended claims.

Having now particularly described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States and what I claim is:

1. In a machine for handling documents, the combination with a casing for said machine and including a plate member which is provided with an opening, a feeding means within said casing for moving documents and provided with a document exit, and a document receptacle movably connected to said casing and movable to a document receiv ng position with respect to said exit of the feeding means, of a supporting member attached to said receptacle and movable within the opening of said plate member, and engaging means between said supporting and said plate members and adapted upon engagement to position said supporting member with the receptacle in the aforementioned document receiving position and with said plate member enclosing one side of said receptacle.

In a machine for handling documents, the combination with a casing for said machine, a feeding means within said casing" for moving documents and providedwith a. document exit, a plate member on said casing and provided with a plurality of openings which are successively spaced farther from said exit, a document receptacle and a link pivotally connected between said casing and said receptacle and permitting a swinging movement of the receptacle into a document receiving position with respect to the exit of the feeding means, of a supporting member attached tosaid receptacle and movable by the swinging movement of said receptacle within a selected opening of said plate member, and engaging means between said supporting member and said plate member and adapted upon engagement to position said supporting member in various positions within said selected opening and to position said receptacle in any of several document receiving positions.

In a machine for handling documents, the combination with a casing for said machine, a feeding means within said casing for moving documents and provided with a document exit, a plate member attached in vertical position to said casing and provided with a plurality of vertically spaced openings which are progressively displaced from said exit, a document receptacle, and a link pivotally connected between said casing and said receptacle and permitting a swinging movement of the receptacle in a vertical plane and into a document receiving position with respect to the exit of the feeding means, of a supporting member attached to said receptacle and movable by the swinging movement of said receptacle within a selected opening of said plate member, and engaging means between said supporting member and said plate member and adapted upon engagement to position said supporting member in various positions within said selected opening and to position said receptacle in any of several document receiving positions.

5. In a machine for handling documents, the combination with a casing for said machine, a feeding means within said casing for moving documents and provided with a document exit, a plate member provided with an opening and pivotally connected to said means for movement from a closed position to an open position, and a document receptacle swingably connected to said casing and movable to a document receiving position with respect to said exit of the feeding means, of a supporting member attached to said receptacle and movable within the opening of said plate member, and engaging means on said supporting member and adapted in closed posiplate member provided with an opening andpivotally connected to said casing for movement to an open position to permit access to the interior of said casing and for movement to a closed position, and a documentreceptacle swingably connected to said casing and movable to a plurality of document receiving positions with respect to said exit of the feeding means, of a support member attached to said receptacle and movable within the opening of said plate member, and engaging means on said support member and adapted toengage said plate member in closed position thereoffor adjustable location of said receptacle in la document receiving position.

feeding means within said casing for moving documents and provided with a document exit, a plate member provided with an opening and pivotally connected to said casing for movement to an open position to permit access to the interior of said casing and for movement to a closed position, fastening means for detachably securing said plate member in closed position to said casing, and a document receptacle swingably connected to said casing and movable to a plurality of document receiving positions with respect to said exit of the feeding means, of a support member attached to said receptacle and movable within the opening of said plate member, and engaging means on said support member and adapted to engage said plate member in closed position thereof for adjustable location of said receptacle in a document receiving position.

8. In a machine for handling documents, the combination with a casing for said machine, a feeding means within said casing for moving documents and provided with a document exit, 1

a platemember provided'with an opening and pivotally connected to said casing for movement to an open position to permit access to the interior of said casing and for movement to a closed position, brace means between said casing and said plate member for supporting said plate member in open position, and a document receptacle swingably connected to-said casing and movable to a plurality of document receiving positions with respect to said exit of the feeding means, of a supterior of said casing and for movement to a closed position, fastening means for detachably securing said plate member in closed position with respect to said casing, brace'means between said movable to a plurality of document receiving positions with respect to said exit of the feeding means, of a support member attached to said receptacle and movable within the opening of said plate member, and engaging means on said support member and adapted to engage said plate member in closed position thereof for adjustable location of said receptacle in a document receiving position.

10. In a machine for handling documents, the combination with a casing for said machine, a feeding means within said casing for moving documents and provided with a document exit,

In a machine for handling documents, the combination with acasing for said machine, a feeding means within said casing for moving documents and provided with a document exit, a plate member provided with an opening, pivotally connected to said casing, movable to a horizontal position to form a shelf on said casing, and movable to an upright position to close said casing, and a document receptacle swingably connected to said casing and movable to a plurality of document receiving positions with respect to said exit of the feeding means, of a support member attached to said receptacle and movable within the opening of said plate member, and engaging means on said support member and adapted to engage said plate member in upright position thereof for adjustable location of said receptacle in document receiving position.

12. In a machine for handling documents, the combination with a casing for said machine, a feeding means within said casing for moving documents and provided with a document exit, a plate member provided with an opening, pivotally connected to said casing, movable to an open position to permit access to the interior of said casing and to form a shelf on said casing, and movable to an upright position to close said cas- .ing, threaded means for detachably securing said plate member in upright position, and a document receptacleswingably connected to said casing and movable to a plurality of document receiving positions with respect to said exit of the feeding means, of a support member attached to said receptacle and movable Within the opening of said plate member, and engaging means on said support member and adapted to engage said plate member in upright position thereof for adjustable location of said receptacle in document receiving position.

In a machine for handling documents, the combination with a casing for said machine, a feeding means within said casing for moving documents and provided with a document exit, a plate member provided with an opening, pivotally connected to said casing, movable to a horizontal position to form a shelf on said casing, and movable to an upright position to close said casing, a plurality of hinged braces pivotally connected be tween said plate member and said casing for supporting said plate member in horizontal position, and a document receptacle swingably connected to said casing and movable to a plurality of document receiving positions with respect to said exit of the feeding means, of a support member at tached to said receptacle and movable within the opening of said plate member, and engaging means on said support member and adapted to engage said plate member in upright position thereof for adjustable location of said receptacle in document receiving position.

14. In a machine for handling documents, the combination with a casing for said machine, a feeding means within said casing for moving documents and provided with a document exit, a plate member provided with an opening, pivotally connected to said casing, movable to a horizontal position to form a shelf on said casing, and movable to an upright position to close said casing, a plurality of supports within said casing and each having a supporting surface in the horizontal plane of said plate member in horizontal position, and a document receptacle swingably connected to said casing and movable to a plurality of document receiving positions with respect to said exit of the feeding means, of a support member attached to said receptacle and movable Within the opening of said plate member, and engaging means on said support member and adapted to engage said plate member in upright position thereof for adjustable location of said receptacle in document receiving position.
