Be it known that I, ROBERT (IBUOKLEY, of Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulky- Ilows,l and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enaable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,reference being had to the accompanying drawings,

and to letters of reference marked thereon,

which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to that class of agricultural implements known as sulky-plows, in which the plow-beam is connected with a carriage or sulky consisting of an axle tree and two supporting-wheels, provided with a draft-pole and usually with a seat, upon which the driver sits and guides the movement of the team and regulates the operation of the plow.

The nature of said invention consists in the combination, with an inclined sulky-plow axletree, of a hinged bar, provided with an operating-lever, and connected to the plow-beam in such manner as to be used for adjusting the plow with regard to the sulky-frame.

lt also consists in the combination7 with the above-mentioned devices, of a bail and lever for raising or lowering said plow, as hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a rear elevation of a sulky-plow embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with one of the wheels removed; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of the same, shown partly in section.

Referring to the parts by letters, A represents a right-hand land-side turning-plow, having beam B, but without the ordinary handles, they being unnecessary when the plow is attached to the sulky; but, as will be evident, plows of any ordinary construction may be used, if desired, the sulky which embodies my invention being adapted for use in connection with any of the ordinary forms of plows.

C is an axle-tree of peculiar form, supported on two wheels, D D. The axle-tree C is inclined upward from the spindle of the lefthand wheel D to a point beyond its center, and is then bent downward in the form of an elbow, e, and then outwardly in a horizontal position, to form the spindle for the right-hand wheel D', as clearly shown by Fig.l of the drawing. Fora left-hand plow, the position of the elbow c would be reversed-that is to say, the `axle-tree would incline upwardly. from the wheelD and .bend downwardly to the Thedraft-pole E is secured to the highest pointl of the elbowor arch of the axle-tree in any suitable manner, and the driversseat (which'it is not thoughtnecessary to show) may be secured in any desired or convenient manner above the axle-tree.

Fis a movable platform or bar, which is hinged to the under side of the axle-tree at one end, and provided at the other with a sleeve or staple, f, through which the elbow c of the axle-tree passes loosely, so as to permit of the platform F being raised and lowered freely. The raising and lowering of this platform F is effected by means of a lever, Gr, and connecting-link g, said lever being pivoted to the draft-pole or to any suitable part of the sulky; and the platform may be secured at any desired elevation by means of an arc shaped rack-bar, H, the teeth of which engage with a notch or shoulder on the handle of the lever G.

I is a bail or bent rod, hinged to the platform F at i i, and provided at or near its center with a hinged bearing-plate, J, to which the plow-beam B is securely fastened. K is alever, pivoted in any suitable manner and position to the axle or sulky-frame, and which is connected with the bail I by means of a linkrod, 1c, so that by its means the plow may be lowered and raised to and from the ground 5 and by means of an arc-shaped rack-bar, L, the teeth of which engage with a notch or shoulder on the handle of the lever K, the plowmaybe suspended clear above the ground, when not in use, for convenience of transportation. Of course, as before stated, and as will be evident, the position of the parts will be reversed when it is desired to use a lefthand plow. o

With a sulky so constructed, with an axletree ofthe peculiar form shown and described, I secure all the advantages of a proper elevation for the draft-pole and drivers seat without any other framing than the axle-tree itself,

and without having the axle-tree made of untnecessary weight and complicated construcion.

Again, by the use of the hinged platform F, to which the hinged bail which carries the plow-beam is attached, I can level or adjust the plow so as to run in proper working position under all usual contingencies arising from inequalities in the level of the soil, hill-side plowing, &c., at the same time. The connections between the sulky and the plow being by hinged joints, the plow is free to rise and fall, so as to adapt itself to rough land and pass over such obstructions as may lie in its path.

It will also be seen that the peculiar shape of the axle-tree affords the necessary space for the operation of the hinged platform F beneath it, one end of said platform being hinged to the under side of the axle-tree, as shown, and the other free to move up and down in the space formed by the upward inclination on the other side of the axle-tree, for he purpose of leveling the plow, as before set orth.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The bar or platform F, one end hinged to the under side of the axle-tree, and its other connected with a lever, by means of which and its connection with the plow-beam the position of the plow with relation to the sulky-frame is adjusted, substantially as and for the purpose specied.

2. The combination of the inclined axletree C, hinged platform F, and levenG with the bail I, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. The combination of the inclined axletree C, hinged platform F, bail I, and lever K,

substantially as and for the purpose specified.
