Third, a. liquid mixing solution is made from 35 It is known that there are various types and sodium silicate, boracic acid, casein, and salkinds of hollow building blocks and units, all conammoniac, and water as is more specifically set structed of various grades of building material, forth in my process patent application Serial No. but not of the structure and formation herein de- 626,200, filed July 29, 1932, heretofore referred scribed and claimed. to using about the following proportions, 30 40 Much difilculty has been experienced in progallons of water, 2%; pounds of sodium silicate, ducing a satisfactory building unit, comprising 1% pounds of boracic acid, 3 pounds of casein, the appearance of polished marble and the re- 4 ounces of sal-ammoniac, and small portions sisting strength of rock, without adding greatly of this solution are separated in different conto the weight of the wall structure. tainers, and each provided with a different min- 5 In accomplishing my invention I use a compoeral coloring ingredient. sition ofmatter comprising ingredients and ma Both the base mixture and the backing mixterials in the various proportions as is more fully ture are made into a plastic composition by comset forth and described in my composition patent bining the liquid mixing solution therewith.
application Serial No. 626,201, filed July 29, 1932, A special mould of the required size and shape 50 all compounded as set forth in my process patent for making the preferred type of building unit is application Serial No. 626,200, filed July 29, 1932, provided and formed with a polished bottom the ingredients and elements and materials theresurface, such as plate glass or other suitable I in used being sodium silicate, boracic acid, casein, polished material, said polished mould bottom sal-ammoniac, cement, marble dust or sand, and being painted, spotted or splashed until the en- 55 tire polished surface is covered, using the various colored solutions from the several small containers, said paint application being referredto as the surface glazing coat I-. On top of the glazing coat I is poured the plastic base mixture of, cement and marble dust mixed with some m ineral color, forming a thin layer of colored marble composition 2. 2 is placed a series of tapered cores 3, either rectangular or cylindrical in form and positioned parallel with each other, said cores extending the entire width of the mould as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. While the marble layer 2 is in the plastic state, the backing mixture of cement and crushed cinders is poured thereon, completely covering the core members 3, forming a non-porous rock backing 4. Slight tamping may be applied to the backing composition for more securely imbedding the coarse cinder concrete aggregate into the marble layer composition, and the entire mass hardening as an integral unit. The special mixing solution permeating the cinder material and reduces it to a consistency of rock formation.
After the block composition has sufficiently dried the cores 3 may be removed from the unit by withdrawing same therefrom from one side of the mould, and the unit seasoned until the required hardness is attained. This building slab may be used in wall construction in the full size slab, or sawed into smaller building blocks as indicated by the dotted lines a. and b of Fig. 1.
If desired the core members 3 may be omitted during construction, leaving the entire backing a homogeneous mass, but the air channels which provide a complete circulation therethrough greatly increase the wall strength as all dampness is readily removed therefrom by either horizontal or vertical ventilation.
- Also when desired the backing 4 formed. of cinder concrete may be omitted, and the finished artificial marble slab or block be cemented to the face of any other backing block or wall such as brick or stone &c, although this is not the purpose of the invention, as such uniting of the marble slab or block will greatly diminish the strength and durability of the product, as the hardening properties of the special mixing solution are omitted.
It is apparent that my building unit is subject to various modifications in design, shape, sizes and composition of the plastic materials without departing from the spirit of my invention, and that any design such as column or double wall units having one or all faces finished and glazed Across this marble layer may be made, and I claim as my invention the design as herein illustrated and any other design that is substantially a substitution of parts therein shown.
Having fully described my cinder chrome building unit, what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V
