paper product container 30 is fit within thetray 10, as shown in FIG. 6, if utilized, thecover shell 50 is placed over thepaper product container 30 and thetray 10. Thecover shell 50 may be decorative, and generally conceals thecontainer 30 and thetray 10. Thecover shell 50 includes a plurality ofside walls top wall 60. Thetop wall 60 includes anopening 62 formed therein that corresponds to anopening 42 formed in atop wall 40 of thecontainer 30, to allow apaper product 46 to be dispensed through theopenings - As shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, the
tray 10 protects thepaper product container 30 from any liquid, such as water, that may accumulate on a surface on which thecontainer 30 rests, such as a countertop, thereby preventing liquid absorption by thecontainer 30 and by anypaper products 46 contained within thecontainer 30. Thetray 10 protects thepaper product container 30 with or without the use of thecover shell 50. As shown, thetray 10 surrounds at least abottom wall 44 of thecontainer 30. Optionally, thetray 10 also surrounds portions ofside walls container 30. - In one embodiment, the
tray 10 is impermeable. In one embodiment, thetray 10 is “impermeable” so that no liquid may pass through thetray 10. In another embodiment, thetray 10 is water impermeable. As used herein, atray 10 is “water impermeable” when it allows an amount of water insufficient to cause structural damage to or structural instability in acontainer 30 when thecontainer 30 is placed within thetray 10. In one embodiment, thetray 10 may be “water impermeable” when it allows no water to contact acontainer 30 when thecontainer 30 is placed within thetray 10. - As shown in FIGS.1-4, 7, and 8, and most clearly in FIG. 3, the
tray 10 may include one orfeet 29 to allow for uneven surfaces on which thetray 10 andpaper product container 30 rests. - Again, at least one
side wall tray 10 includes at least one contact portion to provide for thepaper product container 30 to be frictionally retained by thetray 10. Referring to FIGS. 1, 2, and 4, in one embodiment, the contact portion is a rib orflange 26. Referring to FIGS. 7 and 8, in another embodiment, the contact portion is anindentation 28. When thepaper product container 30 is placed within thetray 10, at least oneside wall container 30 contacts the at least onecontact portion container 30 to be frictionally retained by thetray 10. While the contact portion described herein includes therib 26 or theindentation 28, the contact portion may comprise any art recognized structure that contacts and fits to aside wall paper product container 30 when thecontainer 30 is placed within thetray 10. Optionally, the contact portion extends inwardly from a portion of aside wall tray 10, or is a portion of theside wall - As shown in FIGS.1-4, in one embodiment, the at least one
rib 26 extends inwardly from at least one inner surface of at least oneside wall paper product container 30 to be frictionally retained by thetray 10. In another embodiment, a plurality ofribs 26 extend inwardly from a plurality ofside walls ribs 26 are shown in FIGS. 1, 2, and 4, with arib 26 extending inwardly from theinner surface side wall ribs 26 may extend from oneside wall tray 10 as well. - As discussed above, in one embodiment, the inner dimensions of the
side walls tray 10 may be generally equal to the outer dimensions ofside walls paper product container 30, respectively. In the embodiment where thetray 10 includes at least onerib 26, it should be appreciated that at least oneside wall paper product container 30 is somewhat flexible to allow the at least oneside wall paper product container 30 is being frictionally retained by thetray 10 to accommodate the at least onerib 26. In this embodiment, “frictionally retained” may mean and refer to the at least onerib 26 contacting a portion of the outer surface of at least oneside wall paper product container 30. If thetray 10 includes fourribs 26 extending inwardly from eachside wall rib 26 contacting a portion of the outer surface of eachside wall paper product container 30. - One of ordinary skill in the art should appreciate that providing a plurality of
ribs 26 allows for manufacturing variances of the outer dimensions of thepaper product container 30 to allow for thepaper product container 30 to be frictionally retained by thetray 10. In particular, the outer dimensions of paper product containers often vary from container to container. In addition, the outer dimensions of a particular paper product container may vary as paper products are emptied from the container. Accordingly, there is less room for tolerance between thetray 10 and thecontainer 30 to allow for thecontainer 30 to be frictionally retained by thetray 10 if onerib 26 is provided, as compared to if fourribs 26 are provided. - According to one embodiment, the at least one
rib 26 may extend inwardly a distance greater than or equal to about {fraction (30/1000)} inch, such as greater than or equal to about {fraction (40/1000)} inch, greater than or equal to about {fraction (50/1000)} inch, and greater than or equal to about {fraction (60/1000)} inch. According to one embodiment, the at least onerib 26 may extend inwardly a distance less than or equal to about {fraction (100/1000)} inch, such as less than or equal to about {fraction (90/1000)} inch, less than or equal to about {fraction (80/1000)} inch, and less than or equal to about {fraction (70/1000)} inch. The at least onerib 26 may extend inwardly from any portion of the length of theside wall rib 26 may comprise any art recognized shape including, but not limited to, a trapezoid shape (as shown in FIGS. 1, 2, and 4), a U-shape, a triangular shape, an arcuate shape, a curvilinear shape, or a half-circle shape. The at least onerib 26 may be formed integral with the at least oneside wall rib 26 may be formed separately from the at least oneside wall side wall rib 26 may be comprised of any art recognized material including, but not limited to, plastics, wood, metals, and composites. The at least onerib 26 may be formed of the same material as thetray 10. - As shown in FIGS. 7 and 8, in another embodiment, at least one
side wall indentation 28 formed therein. The at least oneindentation 28 extends inwardly from a portion of at least one inner surface of at least oneside wall container 30 to be frictionally retained by thetray 10. In another embodiment, a plurality ofindentations 28 extend inwardly from a plurality ofside walls indentations 28 are shown in FIGS. 7 and 8, with anindentation 28 extending inwardly from theinner surface side wall indentations 28 may extend from oneside wall tray 10. - As with the embodiment including at least one
rib 26, in the embodiment where the inner dimensions of theside walls tray 10 may be generally equal to the outer dimensions ofside walls container 30, at least oneside wall container 30 is somewhat flexible to allow the at least oneside wall paper product container 30 is being frictionally retained by thetray 10 to accommodate the at least oneindentation 28. In this embodiment, “frictionally retained” may mean and refer to the at least oneindentation 28 contacting a portion of the outer surface of at least oneside wall paper product container 30. If thetray 10 includes fourindentations 28 extending inwardly from eachside wall indentation 28 contacting a portion of the outer surface of eachside wall paper product container 30. - Also as with the
rib 26, one of ordinary skill in the art should appreciate that providing a plurality ofindentations 28 allows for manufacturing variances of the outer dimensions of thepaper product container 30 and that there is less room for tolerance between thetray 10 and thecontainer 30 for thecontainer 30 to be frictionally retained by thetray 10 if oneindentation 28 is provided, when compared to if fourindentations 28 are provided. - According to one embodiment, the at least one
indentation 28 may extend inwardly a distance greater than or equal to about {fraction (30/1000)} inch, such as greater than or equal to about {fraction (40/1000)} inch, greater than or equal to about {fraction (50/1000)} inch, and greater than or equal to about {fraction (60/1000)} inch. According to one embodiment, the at least oneindentation 28 may extend inwardly a distance less than or equal to about {fraction (100/1000)} inch, such as less than or equal to about {fraction (90/1000)} inch, less than or equal to about {fraction (80/1000)} inch, and less than or equal to about {fraction (70/1000)} inch. The at least oneindentation 28 may extend inwardly from any portion of the length of theside wall indentation 28 may comprise any art recognized shape including, but not limited to, a U-shape (as shown in FIGS. 7 and 8), a trapezoid shape, a triangular shape, an arcuate shape, a curvilinear shape, or a half-circle shape. - It should be appreciated that the inner dimensions of the
side walls tray 10 may be much larger than the outer dimensions ofside walls paper product container 30, respectively. In one embodiment, the contact portion(s) of theside wall inner surface side walls tray 10 to the outer surface(s) of theside wall container 30. For example, for a paper product container that is about 4½ inches in length by about 4½ inches in width, and with a tray that is about 6 inches in length by about 6 inches in width, the contact portion(s) 26 or 28 may generally extend inwardly a distance of 6 inches minus 4½ inches, or 1½ inches. - In another embodiment, at least one
side wall side walls paper product container 30. The height of the at least oneside wall respective side wall container 30. For example, for apaper product container 30 that includes aside wall side wall - In one embodiment, the height of the at least one
side wall side wall - It should be appreciated that two or
more side walls side walls side walls tray 10 is too short, then thetray 10 would easily fall off of thecontainer 30 when thecontainer 30 was lifted from a surface. On the other hand, if the height of theside walls container 30 within theside walls tray 10. - As shown in FIGS. 9 and 10, in another embodiment, the present invention is directed to a liquid shield member comprised of a
plastic film material 70 that is initially wrapped around at least a portion of thepaper product container 30, wherein theplastic film 70 includes perforations so that a portion of theplastic film 72 may be removed from thecontainer 30, while another portion of theplastic film 70 remains surrounding at least thebottom wall 44 of thecontainer 30. Theplastic film 70 may be perforated anywhere relative to thecontainer 30 that allows afirst portion 74 to remain surrounding at least thebottom wall 44 of thecontainer 30, while allowing asecond portion 76 to be removed from thecontainer 30 in order to gain access into thecontainer 30 through theopening 42 of thecontainer 30. - The
plastic film 70 may be comprised of any art recognized plastic film including, but not limited to, polyethylene, polypropylene, or Kyler. As with thetray 10, in one embodiment, theplastic film 70 may be impermeable, and, in another embodiment, theplastic film 70 may be water impermeable. Theplastic film 70 may be a standard film or a shrink-wrap film. While as shown in FIGS. 9 and 10 there is space between thecontainer 30 and theplastic film 70, in one embodiment, theplastic film 70 may be wrapped tightly around thecontainer 30. The space between thecontainer 30 and theplastic film 70 is shown to illustrate theplastic film 70. In one embodiment, theplastic film 70 is a shrink-wrap film that is shrunk wrap around thecontainer 30. In another embodiment, theplastic film 70 is a standard film that is wrapped tightly around the container 30 (such as in a wrapper, a device well-known in the paper industry) and then heated to seal the film around thecontainer 30. Theplastic film 70 may be a clear film, or may be printed with indicia. - The perforated
line 72 may be formed in theplastic film 70 before theplastic film 70 is wrapped around thecontainer 30. Any art recognized device may form the perforations of theperforated line 72 in theplastic film 70 including, but not limited to, a wrapper, again a device well-known in the paper industry. - In one embodiment, as shown in FIGS. 9 and 10, the
plastic film 70 includes aperforated line 72 provided around the circumference of thecontainer 30. While theperforated line 72 is shown as being horizontal in FIGS. 9 and 10, it should be appreciated that theperforated line 72 may comprise non-horizontal portions. Theperforated line 72 may be positioned at any position relative to thebottom wall 44 of thecontainer 30, including proximal the bottom of thecontainer 30, as well as proximal the top of thecontainer 30. In one embodiment, theperforated line 72 may be positioned less than or equal to about ½ of the height of at least oneside wall container 30. - In the embodiment shown, the
perforated line 72 is positioned proximal to thebottom wall 44. In one embodiment, theperforated line 72 may be positioned greater than or equal to about ⅛ inches from thebottom wall 44 of thecontainer 30, such as greater than or equal to about {fraction (3/16)} inch, greater than or equal to about ¼ inch, greater than or equal to about {fraction (5/16)} inch, and greater than or equal to about ⅜ inch. In one embodiment, theperforated line 72 may be positioned less than or equal to about ¾ inch from thebottom wall 44 of thecontainer 30, such as less than or equal to about {fraction (11/16)} inch, less than or equal to about ⅝ inch, less than or equal to about {fraction (9/16)} inch, less than or equal to about ½ inch, and less than or equal to about {fraction (7/16)} inch. - In another embodiment (not shown), the
plastic film 70 includes a perforated line that is provided around a circumference of theopening 42 of thecontainer 30. - In one embodiment, an adhesive may be provided to adhere the
first portion 74 of theplastic film 70 to thecontainer 30. The adhesive may comprise any art recognized material capable of adhering thefirst portion 74 of theplastic film 70 to thecontainer 30 including, but not limited to, glue. In one embodiment (not shown), the adhesive may be a continuous line of adhesive provided around the circumference of thecontainer 30 at a height below theperforated line 72. In another embodiment (not shown), the adhesive may be a non-continuous line of adhesive provided around the circumference of thecontainer 30 at a height below theperforated line 72. In another embodiment (not shown), the adhesive may be one or more spots of adhesive provided around the circumference of thecontainer 30 at a height below theperforated line 72. In yet another embodiment (not shown), the adhesive may be one or more spots of adhesive provided between theplastic film 70 and thebottom wall 44 of thecontainer 30. The adhesive may be applied to either theplastic film 70 or thecontainer 30 before adhering thefirst portion 74 to one ormore side walls container 30. The adhesive may be a spray adhesive. It should, however, be appreciated that an adhesive may not be not required where theplastic film 70 is shrunk wrap around thecontainer 30, or where theplastic film 70 is wrapped tightly around thecontainer 30 and then sealed. - In use, a user tears the
plastic film 70 along theperforated line 72 in order to separate theplastic film 70 into thefirst portion 74 and thesecond portion 76. This may be accomplished by the user inserting his or her thumb into theperforated line 72 and pulling the first andsecond portions second portion 76, leaving thefirst portion 74 to protect thepaper product container 30, and anypaper product 46 contained within, from any liquid present on the surface on which thecontainer 30 rests. Thefirst portion 74 protects at least thebottom wall 44 of thecontainer 30 and may also protect portions ofside walls container 30. - In one embodiment, a pull tab (not shown) is provided adjacent the
perforated line 72.
