Abstract
A theater seat assembly includes a pair of opposed stanchions for attachment to a support surface, a generally horizontal seat portion disposed between and operatively connected to the stanchions, and a generally upright back. portion disposed between and operatively connected to the stanchions. The theater seat assembly may include a lounge mechanism operatively connected to the back portion and the stanchions to allow the back portion to lounge rearward relative to the stanchion. The theater seat assembly may also include a cushion suspension system operatively connected to the seat portion and the stanchions to allow the seat portion to deflect downwardly relative to the stanchions. The theater seat assembly may further include each one of the seat portion and the back portion having a frame, a cushion disposed adjacent the frame and a trim cover covering the cushion and attached to the frame.
Description
- The present application is a divisional of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 09/650,345, filed Aug. 28, 2000.
- 1. Field of the Invention
- The present invention relates generally to seats and, more specifically, to a theater seat assembly.
- 2. Description of the Related Art
- It is known to provide theater seats for a theater such as a movie theater. Typically, the theater seat includes a generally horizontal seat portion and a generally vertical back portion operatively connected to the seat portion. The seat portion includes a seat frame and a cushion attached to the seat frame. The back portion is fixed relative to the seat portion by a stanchion secured to a floor of the theater. The seat portion pivots relative to the stanchion and back portion.
- Although the above theater seats have worked, it is desirable to provide further cushioning of the seat portion. It is also desirable to provide a great deal of comfort and structural integrity to the seat portion. It is further desirable to provide the back portion with a lounge mechanism to allow the back portion to lounge and not leave a potential pinching hazard.
- Accordingly, the present invention is a theater seat assembly including a pair of opposed stanchions for attachment to a support surface, a generally horizontal seat portion disposed between and operatively connected to the stanchion, and a generally upright back portion disposed between and operatively connected to the stanchions. The theater seat assembly may include a lounge mechanism operatively connected to the back portion and the stanchions to allow the back portion to lounge rearward relative to the stanchions. The theater seat assembly may also include a cushion suspension system operatively connected to the seat portion and the stanchions to allow the seat portion to deflect downwardly relative to the stanchions. The theater seat assembly may further include each one of the seat portion and the back portion having a frame, a cushion disposed adjacent the frame and a trim cover covering the cushion and attached to the frame.
- One advantage of the present invention is that an improved theater seat assembly is provided. Another advantage of the present invention is that the theater seat assembly has a cushion suspension system to provide comfort and structural integrity to the seat portion. Yet another advantage of the present invention is that the cushion suspension system has an elastomer reinforced fabric as suspension. Still another advantage of the present invention is that the theater seat assembly has a lounge mechanism to allow the back portion to lounge relative to the seat portion and not leave a pinching hazard. A further advantage of the present invention is that the theater seat assembly has a combination of a pivot and torsion spring.
- Other features and advantages of the present invention will be readily appreciated, as the same becomes better understood, after reading the subsequent description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

theater seat assembly 10, according to the present invention, is shown for a theater such as a movie theater (not shown). Thetheater seat assembly 10 includes astanchion 12 for supporting and securing thetheater seat assembly 10 to a support surface (not shown) such as a floor of the movie theater. Thestanchion 12 includes aleg portion 14 extending generally vertically at a predetermined angle and anarm portion 16 extending generally perpendicular to theleg portion 14. Theleg portion 14 andarm portion 16 are generally tubular members having a generally rectangular cross-sectional shape. Thestanchion 12 includes afoot portion 18 at a lower end of theleg portion 14 for attachment by suitable means such as fasteners (not shown) to the support surface. Thefoot portion 18 is generally rectangular in shape. Thestanchion 12 also includes abracket portion 20 at an upper end of theleg portion 14 for a function to be described. Thebracket portion 20 is generally U-shaped. Thebracket portion 20 has a plurality ofapertures 20 a extending therethrough for a function to be described. Thestanchion 12 includes asupport bracket 21 at one end of thearm portion 16. Thesupport bracket 21 has an aperture 21 a extending therethrough for a function to be described. Thestanchion 12 is made of a metal material such as steel. It should be appreciated that thestanchion 12 is integral and connected together by suitable means such as welding. - The
theater seat assembly 10 also includes a seat portion, generally indicated at 22, operatively connected to thestanchion 12. Theseat portion 22 includes aseat cushion 24 and aseat trim cover 26 covering theseat cushion 24. Theseat cushion 24 is generally rectangular in shape, but may have any suitable shape. Theseat cushion 24 is made of a foam material such as urethane foam. Theseat trim cover 26 is made of a flexible material such as cloth, vinyl, leather or a combination thereof. Theseat trim cover 26 has at least one, preferably a plurality of J-shaped retainers 27 (FIG. 5) attached to a periphery thereof by suitable means such as by stitching or sewing. Theretainers 27 are made of a suitable plastic material. Theretainers 27 are attached to a plurality ofinterior flanges 42 of aseat frame 30 to be described. It should be appreciated that theseat cushion 24 will be enclosed by theseat trim cover 26 and theretainers 27 will keep theseat cushion 24 andseat trim cover 26 in place when theretainers 27 are disposed over theinterior flanges 42 of theseat frame 30 to be described. - Referring to FIGS. 3 through 5, the
seat portion 22 includes a seatcushion suspension system 28 operatively connected to theseat cushion 24 and thestanchion 12 to allow theseat portion 22 to deflect downwardly relative to thestanchion 12. The seatcushion suspension system 28 includes aseat frame 30 to support theseat cushion 24. Theseat frame 30 is generally rectangular in shape, but may have any suitable shape. Theseat frame 30 includes anupper flange 32 extending outwardly generally perpendicular thereto and alower flange 34 spaced vertically from theupper flange 32 and extending outwardly generally perpendicular thereto. Theupper flange 32 may include a plurality ofapertures 36 extending therethrough and spaced therealong for a function to be described. Thelower flange 34 has arecess 38 with a generally curved or arcuate shape for a function to be described. Theseat frame 30 also has a plurality ofapertures 40 extending therethrough for a function to be described. Theseat frame 30 further includes at least one, preferably a plurality ofinterior flanges 42 extending therealong and having achannel 44 therein to receive one end of theretainers 27. Theseat frame 30 is made of a rigid material such as plastic. It should be appreciated that theseat frame 30 is integral, unitary and formed as one-piece by conventional injection molding. - The seat
cushion suspension system 28 includes aseat suspension 46 connected to theseat frame 30. Theseat suspension 46 has a suspension member 48 made from a one-piece elastomer reinforced fabric known as Dymetrol. The suspension member 48 is generally rectangular in shape. Theseat suspension 46 may include a pair ofopposed support wires 50 extending longitudinally along the sides of the suspension member 48. Thesupport wires 50 are linear or straight and made of a metal material such as steel. Thesupport wires 50 are cut-to-length to the same length as the sides of the suspension member 48. Thesupport wires 50 are disposed along the sides of the suspension member 48 by wrapping a portion of the sides of the suspension member 48 over the support members and stitching the suspension member 48 to itself to form a channel for thesupport wires 50. Theseat suspension 46 may include a plurality of seat hooks 52 extending outwardly from thesupport wires 50. Preferably, there are four seat hooks 52 spaced longitudinally along each side of the suspension member 48 for a total of eight seat hooks 52. The seat hooks 52 have a general “C” shape with one end extending through the suspension member 48 and disposed about one of thesupport wires 50 and the other end disposed through one of theapertures 36 in theupper flange 32 of theseat frame 30. The seat hooks 52 are made of a metal material such as steel. In another embodiment illustrated in FIG. 7, theseat suspension 46 includes at least one, preferably a plurality of J-shapedretainers 53 similar to theretainers 27 are attached to the longitudinal sides of the suspension member 48 by suitable means such as by stitching or sewing. Theretainers 53 are made of a suitable plastic material and attached to theupper flange 32 of theseat frame 30. It should be appreciated that theretainers 53 will keep the suspension member 48 in place when theretainers 53 are disposed over theupper flange 32 of theseat frame 30. It should also be appreciated that theseat suspension 46 is pre-assembled and then attached to theseat frame 30 with the seat hooks 52 to keep the suspension member 48 in place. - The
seat portion 26 includes acounter-balanced pivot mechanism 54 connected to theseat cushion suspension 28 and thestanchion 12. Thecounter-balanced pivot mechanism 54 includes acenter member 56. Thecenter member 56 is a cylindrical rod extending laterally and having a generally circular cross-sectional shape. Thecenter member 56 is made of a metal material such as steel. - The
counter-balanced pivot mechanism 54 also includes a pair ofpivot center brackets 58 with one near each end of thecenter member 56. Thepivot center brackets 58 are generally planar and extend longitudinally and vertically. Each of thepivot center brackets 58 has afirst aperture 60 extending therethrough to receive thecenter member 56 and at least one, preferably a plurality of second apertures 61 extending therethrough to receive afasteners 62 to connect thepivot center bracket 58 to theseat frame 30. Thepivot center bracket 58 has abushing 63 disposed in theaperture 60 and about thepivot center member 56. Thebushing 63 is made of a metal material such as bronze or steel. Thepivot center bracket 58 also has anupper flange 64 extending longitudinally and inwardly generally perpendicular thereto. Thepivot center bracket 58 also has alower flange 66 spaced vertically from theupper flange 64 and extending longitudinally and inwardly generally perpendicular thereto. Thepivot center bracket 58 is made of a metal material such as steel. It should be appreciated that thepivot center brackets 58 rotate or pivot relative to thecenter member 56 via thebushings 63, in turn, rotating or pivoting theseat frame 30. - The
counter-balanced pivot mechanism 54 further includes astop member 68 disposed about and fixed to thecenter member 56 near each end thereof between the upper andlower flanges pivot center bracket 58. Thestop member 68 is generally oval in shape and made of a metal material such as steel. Thestop member 68 includes an upper pin portion 69 a and alower pin portion 69 b extending inwardly and abumper 69 c disposed about thepin portion 69 a and 69 b. Thebumper 69 c is made of an elastomeric material such as rubber and contacts the upper andlower flanges pivot center brackets 58 andseat frame 30 are pivoted relative to thecenter member 56. - The
counter-balanced pivot mechanism 54 includes anattachment bracket 70 at each end of thecenter member 56. Theattachment bracket 70 is generally L shaped and made of a metal material such as steel. Theattachment bracket 70 has asecond aperture 72 extending through a first portion thereof to receive thecenter member 56 and has a second aperture (not shown) extending through a second portion thereof to receive afastener 74 to attach theattachment bracket 70 to thesupport bracket 21 on thearm portion 16 of thestanchion 12. It should be appreciated that thepivot center brackets 58 rotate relative to thecenter member 56. It should also be appreciated that thecenter member 56 is located rearward from a center of theseat frame 30 to counter-balance a weight of theseat portion 26. - As illustrated in FIG. 8, the
counter-balanced pivot mechanism 54 also includes a counter-weight 75 removably secured to theseat frame 30. The counter-weight 75 is generally rectangular in shape and made of metal material such as lead. The counter-weight 75 is disposed on a rear side of theseat frame 30 and supported by at least one, preferably a pair oflower ledges 76 between theupper flange 32 and thelower ledges 76. Theupper flange 32 has adeflectable finger 77 having aprojection 77 a and is deflectable to allow the counter-weight 75 to be slid and disposed between thelower ledges 76 and theupper flange 32. Theprojection 77 a and a stop (not shown) on one of thelower ledges 76 prevent the counter-weight 75 from exiting theseat frame 30. It should be appreciated that the counter-weight 75 may be deflected upwardly to allow the counter-weight 75 to be slid past theprojection 77 a to remove the counter-weight 75 from theseat frame 30. It should also be appreciated that the counter-weight 75 is of a sufficient mass to allow a front of theseat frame 30 to rotate upwardly when theseat portion 22 is unoccupied. - The
seat portion 22 includes aseat cover 78 to cover the bottom of thereof. Theseat cover 78 has a generally rectangular shape, but may have any suitable shape. Theseat cover 78 is made of fiberglass reinforced co-polymer plastic material and formed by conventional injection molding processes. Theseat cover 78 has a pair of forward hooks 79 a, a pair ofside recess 79 b and a pair ofrear bosses 79 c that allow theseat cover 78 to be attached to theseat frame 30. Theseat cover 78 is disposed over the bottom of theseat frame 30 and thehooks 79 a are disposed over a forwardinterior flange 42 and therecesses 79 b receive thecenter member 56. Theseat cover 78 is secured to theseat frame 30 by suitable means such asfasteners 80 extending through thebosses 79 c and engaging thelower flange 34 of theseat frame 30. It should be appreciated that fiberglass strengthens theseat cover 78. - The
theater seat assembly 10 also includes a back portion, generally indicated at 81, operatively connected to thestanchion 12. Theback portion 81 includes aback cushion 82 and a backtrim cover 84 covering theback cushion 82. Theback cushion 82 is generally rectangular in shape, but may have any suitable shape. Theback cushion 82 is made of a foam material such as urethane foam. The backtrim cover 84 is a flexible material such as cloth, vinyl, leather or a combination thereof. The backtrim cover 84 has at least one, preferably a plurality of J-shapedretainers 86 attached to a periphery thereof by suitable means such as by stitching or sewing. Theretainers 86 at a top and bottom of the backtrim cover 84 are attached tobars 89 of aback frame 88 to be described. Theretainers 86 on the sides are attached to each other similar to a bra. Additionally, the backtrim cover 84 may include extensions (not shown) formingcreases 85 extending through theback cushion 82 and attached to thebars 89 of theback frame 88. It should be appreciated that theback cushion 82 will be enclosed by the backtrim cover 84 and theretainers 86 will keep theback cushion 82 and backtrim cover 84 in place when theretainers 86 are disposed over aback frame 88 to be described. - Referring to FIGS. 3, 4 and6, the
back portion 81 includes aback frame 88 operatively connected to theback cushion 82 and thestanchion 12. Theback frame 88 is generally an inverted U shape, but may have any suitable shape to support theback cushion 82. Theback frame 88 includes at least one, preferably a plurality ofbars 89 extending therebetween to support theback cushion 82. Theback frame 88 also includes alower flange 90 extending outwardly laterally at lower end thereof. Thelower flange 90 is generally rectangular in shape and may have one ormore ribs 92 therein. Theback frame 88 also includes aside housing 94 extending forwardly from thelower flange 90 and generally perpendicular thereto. Theside housing 94 has abase wall 96 and aside wall 98 extending outwardly generally perpendicular thereto along a top, bottom and forward edge thereof. The top of thesidewall 98 may include at least one, preferably a plurality ofapertures 99 for a function to be described. Theside housing 94 has a recess (not shown), which is disposed over apin member 100 extending inwardly from theleg portion 14 of thestanchion 12. Theback frame 88 is made of a metal material such as steel. It should be appreciated that thelower flange 90 andside housing 94 are integral and formed as one-piece from a metal material such as steel and connected to theback frame 88 by suitable means such as welding. It should also be appreciated that theback frame 88 is integral and connected together by suitable means such as welding. - The
back portion 81 includes anattachment bracket 102 attached to theleg portion 14 of thestanchion 12. Theattachment bracket 102 has abase wall 104 that is generally planar and secured to theleg portion 14 by suitable means such as welding. Thepin member 100 is secured to a lower end of thebase wall 104 by suitable means such as welding. Theattachment bracket 102 also includes a sidewall 106 extending generally perpendicular to thebase wall 104 along a rear edge thereof. The sidewall 106 has a generally inverted “L” shape. In one embodiment, the sidewall 106 has anupper portion 108 with an aperture 110 extending therethrough. The aperture 110 is preferably threaded to receive afastener 112 that extends through one of theapertures 99 in theside housing 94 to fix the position of theback portion 81 relative to thestanchion 12. It should be appreciated that theapertures 99 allow various positions of theback portion 81 relative to thestanchion 12 for different positions of theseat 10 within the theater. It should also be appreciated that theback portion 81 is fixed relative to thestanchion 12. - In another embodiment, the
back portion 81 may include a lounge mechanism, generally indicated at 114, for allowing theback cushion 82 to lounge back and forth within a predetermined angle. Thelounge mechanism 114 includes abushing member 116 extending outwardly from thebase wall 104 of theattachment bracket 102 near an upper end thereof. Thelounge mechanism 114 also includes apin member 118 extending outwardly from thebase wall 96 of theside housing 94 and having aslot 119 therein. Thelounge mechanism 114 includes aspring 120 of a leaf type having a lower end wrapped about thepin member 118 and disposed in theslot 119 and an upper end disposed against thebushing member 116. Thespring 120 urges theback portion 81 to a forward upright position. Thelounge mechanism 114 also includes aslot 122 in thebase wall 96 of theside housing 94. Theslot 122 is preferably coated with a Teflon coating 124. Thelounge mechanism 114 further includes apin 126 disposed within thebushing member 116 and extending through theslot 122. Thepin 126 is removably disposed in thebushing member 116. Theslot 122 extends longitudinally and arcuately to allow theback portion 81 to lounge or move rearward back and forth within a predetermined angle of approximately sixteen degrees to twenty-four degrees. - The
back portion 81 includes aback cover 128 to cover the back thereof. Theback cover 128 has a generally rectangular shape, but may have any suitable shape. Theback cover 128 is made of fiberglass reinforced co-polymer plastic material and formed by conventional injection molding processes. Theback cover 78 has at least one, preferably a plurality of pairs ofhooks 130 and a pair ofapertures 132 that allow theback cover 128 to be attached to theback frame 88. Theback cover 128 is disposed over the back of theback frame 88 and thehooks 130 are disposed over the selected ones of thebars 89. Theback cover 128 is secured to theback frame 88 by suitable means such asfasteners 134 extending through theapertures 132 and engaging thelower flange 90 of theback frame 88. It should be appreciated that fiberglass strengthens theback cover 128. - The
theater seat assembly 10 includes anarmrest 136 connected to each of thestanchions 12. Thearmrest 136 extends longitudinally and has a generally rectangular shape. Thearmrest 136 has aflange portion 138 extending rearward for connection to thebracket 20 of theleg portion 14 of thestanchion 12. Theflange portion 138 has a thickness less than the remainder of thearmrest 136 and a generally circular shape. Theflange portion 138 has a first orcentral aperture 140 extending axially therethrough. Theflange portion 138 also has asecond aperture 142 spaced above thefirst aperture 140 and extending axially therethrough. Theflange portion 138 also has a curved orarcuate slot 144 spaced below thefirst aperture 140. Theflange portion 138 is disposed between the flanges of thebracket 20 and pivotally connected thereto by suitable means such as afirst fastener 146 extending through thefirst aperture 140 andapertures 20 a. In one embodiment, thearmrest 136 includes asecond fastener 148 extending through theslot 144 of theflange portion 138 andapertures 20 a of thebracket 20 to allow thearmrest 136 to pivot relative thereto. In another embodiment, thesecond fastener 148 extends through thesecond aperture 142 of theflange portion 138 andapertures 20 a to fix thearmrest 136 relative to thebracket 20. It should be appreciated that thefasteners - The
armrest 136 also has acup holder portion 150 at a forward end thereof. Thecup holder portion 150 is generally circular in shape and has a generallycircular cavity 152 therein to receive a cup (not shown). Thecup holder portion 150 has a bottom wall 154 forming a bottom of thecavity 152 and a plurality ofapertures 156 extending through the bottom wall 154 to allow objects to pass therethrough. Thecup holder portion 150 may have a step orshoulder 156 forming an enlarged portion of thecavity 152 to allow different sized cups to rest thereon. Thearmrest 136 is made of a plastic material and may have apadding material 157 on a top portion thereof. - The
theater seat assembly 10 may include aside panel 158 attached to the theater seat on an aisle side thereof. Theside panel 158 is generally rectangular in shape and made of a plastic material. Theside panel 158 is connected to theaisle side stanchion 12 by suitable means such asfasteners 160. - The present invention has been described in an illustrative manner. It is to be understood that the terminology, which has been used, is intended to be in the nature of words of description rather than of limitation.
- Many modifications and variations of the present invention are possible in light of the above teachings. Therefore, within the scope of the appended claims, the present invention may be practiced other than as specifically described.
Claims (20)
1. A theater seat assembly comprising:
a pair of opposed stanchions for attachment to a support surface;
a generally horizontal seat portion disposed between and operatively connected to said stanchions;
a generally upright back portion disposed between and operatively connected to said stanchions; and
a cushion suspension system operatively connected to said seat portion and said stanchions to allow said seat portion to deflect downwardly relative to said stanchions.
2. A theater seat assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said seat portion includes a seat frame having a flange extending outwardly.
3. A theater seat assembly as set forth in claim 2 wherein said cushion suspension system includes a suspension member disposed between sidewalls of said seat frame.
4. A theater seat assembly as set forth in claim 3 wherein said cushion suspension system includes a plurality of apertures in said flange and a plurality of hooks connected to said suspension member and disposed in said apertures.
5. A theater seat assembly as set forth in claim 4 wherein said cushion suspension system includes a retainer extending along each side of said suspension member and attached to said flange.
6. A theater seat assembly as set forth in claim 5 wherein said retainer is J-shaped.
7. A theater seat assembly comprising:
a pair of opposed stanchions for attachment to a support surface;
a generally horizontal seat portion disposed between and operatively connected to said stanchions;
a generally upright back portion disposed between and operatively connected to said stanchions; and
each one of said seat portion and said back portion including a frame, a cushion disposed adjacent said frame and a trim cover covering said cushion and attached to said frame.
8. A theater seat assembly as set forth in claim 7 wherein said trim cover includes at least one retainer for removably attaching said trim cover to said frame.
9. A theater seat assembly as set forth in claim 8 wherein said at least one retainer is J-shaped.
10. A theater seat assembly as set forth in claim 8 wherein said frame of said seat portion has at least one inner flange, said at least one retainer being attached to said at least one flange.
11. A theater seat assembly as set forth in claim 8 wherein said frame of said back portion has at least one bar, said at least one retainer being attached to said at least one bar.
12. A theater seat assembly comprising:
a pair of opposed stanchions for attachment to a support surface;
a generally horizontal seat portion disposed between and operatively connected to said stanchions, said seat portion including a seat frame having a flange extending outwardly; and
a cushion suspension system including a suspension member disposed between sidewalls of said seat frame and a retainer extending along each side of said suspension member and attached to said flange to allow said seat portion to deflect downwardly relative to said stanchions.
13. A theater seat assembly as set forth in claim 12 wherein said retainer is J-shaped.
14. A theater seat assembly as set forth in claim 12 wherein said retainer is made of a plastic material.
15. A theater seat assembly as set forth in claim 12 wherein said suspension member is made from a one-piece elastomer reinforced fabric.
16. A theater seat assembly as set forth in claim 12 wherein said suspension member is made from Dymetrol.
17. A theater seat assembly as set forth in claim 12 wherein said suspension member is generally rectangular in shape.
18. A theater seat assembly as set forth in claim 12 wherein said seat portion includes a cushion disposed adjacent said seat frame and a trim cover covering said cushion and attached to said seat frame.
19. A theater seat assembly as set forth in claim 18 wherein said trim cover includes at least one retainer for removably attaching said trim cover to said seat frame.
20. A theater seat assembly as set forth in claim 19 wherein said at least one retainer is J-shaped.
