Patented May 14, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,001,449 I I TOY PISTOL Ernest H. Bergstrom, Dorchester, Mass. Application April 18, 1934, Serial No. 721,120
12 Claims.-
This invention relates to toy pistolsand'has for its object the provision of an article of this character especially adapted for propelling marbles along a substantially horizontal surface into a goal member disposed upon said surface thereby providing entertainment for children.
1 This object is attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
Forthe purpose of illustrating the invention, one preferred form thereof is illustrated in the drawing, this form having been found to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to beunderstood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and. organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described except as required by the scope of the appended claims.
Of the drawing I Figure 1 represents an elevation of a toypistol embodying the principles of the present invention. 'Figure 2 represents an elevation of the lower end of same with the supporting foot thereof removed.
Figure Srepresents an elevation of a goal mamber used in connection with said pistol.
7 Figure 4 represents an end elevation of the pistol.
Figure 5 represents a vertical section of same on line 5, 5 on Fig. 4, and f Figure 6 represents an inverted plan of the pistol.
Figures 4, 5 and 6 are shown drawnto an enlarged scale. 7
Similar characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawing.
In the drawing, I0 is a chambered housing having a barrel portion II and a'handle portion I2.
This housing is made of two parts secured together in anywell known manner. a
. Within the chamber I3 of the housing Ill isdisposed a slidable member I4 having a finger I5 projecting from said housing through an elongated slot I6. 7 V v The lower end I! of the slidable member I4 is inclined as indicated in Fig. 5 of the drawing.
with inwardly extending projections and 2| formed upon said housing and limiting the movement of said slidable member I4 in either direc- .tion.
The member I4 is provided with an upwardly teeth 23.
'an ear 34 formed upon the'lower Wall 35 of the her l4 downwardly into extending arm 22 inoneedge of which is formed a plurality of ratchet teeth 23 and pivoted at 24 and disposed withinthe chamber I3 is a pawl member 25 adapted tocoact with-the teeth 23.",
, The upper end 26 of this pawl member 25jextends .through a slot 21 inthe housing IIL One face ofthe end 26. is knurled as at 28,
thereby forming a gripping surface by which the pawl 25 may be moved about the pivot 24 to release said pawl fromf engagement with the housing I0. This spring 33 tendsto pull the slidable memq the'position shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing.- I I Bearing against the inclined edge I! of slid-' ,25
able member I4 is a cone-shaped head 35 of a plunger 31 disposed substantially perpendicular to the barrel portion I I of the housing I0.
Between the inner wall of the housing I0 and thehead 36 of said plunger is a spring 38, the tension of which will retain the plunger 31 in retractedposition when the slidable member I4 is withdrawn from the path thereof.
The lower end of the barrel portion, I I is wholly enclosed by the wall 35 and from this wall 35 extends two headed. studs 39 adapted to coact with keyhole slots 40 in a supporting plate 4|.
This plate M is bifurcated as at' 42 thereby forming a track on which a marble 43 may be disposed when thepistol is to be used.
In connection with the pistol a goal member 44 is used which is made of lead or other heavy metal and is disposed on a substantially horizontal surface 46. a
This goal member 44 is circular with inclined sides and a central depression 45 as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
. When the pistol is in use the supporting plate 4| is disposed upon the horizontal surface 46 at 5 any desired distance from the goal member 44, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. p
The operator then by grasping the handle por tion I2 and pulling the finger I5 towards the handle, the slidable member l4 may be raised it outwardly, said member having a plurality of ratchet teeth; a spring for moving said member downwardly; and a spring-actuated pivoted pawl coacting with said teeth to retain said member in retracted position.
10. In a device of the class described, a housing formed with a barrel portion and a handle portion; a plunger movable in a bearing perpendicular to and near the outer end of said barrel portion, normally retained in retracted position; mechanism within said housing under tension including a wedge member contacting with the end of said plunger and adapted to force said plunger outwardly; and a marble-holding track member secured to the end of said barrel portion and parallel with said plunger.
11. In a device of the class described, a housing formed with a. barrel portion and a handle portion; a plunger movable in a bearing perpendicular to and nearthe outer end of said barrel Q portion; a light spring for normally retaining said plunger in retracted position; mechanism within said housing under tension of a heavy spring and adapted, when released, to force said plunger outwardly; and a forked marble-holding track member secured to the end of said barrel portion and parallel with said plunger.
12. In a device of the class described, a housing formed with a barrel portion and a handle portion; a plunger perpendicular to and near the outer end of said barrel portion normally 'retained in retracted position; mechanism within said housing under tension and adapted, when
