Description
n May 14, 1935. w. c. HIE-RING HAND BAG Filed July 5 1935 ATTORNEY Patented May 14, 1935 HAND BAG William C., Hiering,'Mllburn Township, Essex County, N. J., assignor to J. E. Mergott Company, Newark, N. J., a corporation of Delaware Application `lilly 5, 1933, Serial No. 679,065
7 Claims.
This invention relates to hand bags, and more particularly to devices for attaching initial letters and other ornamentations to the frame members used in hand bags.
As a means of ornamentation and also of identiiication, it is the practice, at present, to attach to hand bags the initial letters of the owner.
A number of expedients for this purpose have been devised, but such expedients are objectionable in that they are inconvenient and require an appreciable amount of time to attach a letter to a bag, especially since the attaching is generally performed by a person who is not mechanically skilled, su'ch as a clerk in the store where the hand bag is purchased. It is the custom of-storekeepers to have on hand ornamental lettersof the alphabet so that he can accommodate any customer who might desire initial letters attached to a bag. Y
' It is an object of this invention to provide a simple device which can be conveniently and readily attached directly A,to a frame member of a hand bag by unskilled persons.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device capable of being attached to a frame member of a hand bag, said device 'carrying initial letters or other ornamentation.
These and other advantageous objects which will later appean'are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and in which:
Fig. l represents a perspective view of a hand bag frame embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 represents a perspective view showing the ornament carrying device which is attached to a frame member,
Fig. 3 represents a plan view of a portion of a frame member embodying my invention,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of a frame member showing apertures in the bottom thereof to receive an element of my attaching device,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the manner in which two of the attaching devices can be used to support a relatively long bar carrying a name or other ornamentation,
Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9 show steps of the process of attaching my device to a hand bag, and
Fig. 10 is a perspective view of a modified form of my invention, having knobs thereon for bag fastening purposes.
Referring to the drawing, in Fig. 1 is shown a bag frame having a pair of hingedly connected bag frame members II and I2, having outwardly opening channels.
One of the frame members,
for example the member `I I in Fig. l, has, in the with the fiat strip is, which has a. bowed` or 10 U-shaped portion il to provide, with the inner wall I3 of the frame member, a pocket fora purpose hereinafter explained. j
The strip I5 may be attached to the l inner Wall I8 by means of solder; or the strip may be provided with hooks 25 on its upper edge, which t in recesses 26 in the upper edge of the inner Wall I8 and engage thereover (see Fig. 6)'.
In Fig. 2 is shown a perspective view of the attaching device which comprises a plate I9 having a right-angularly directed flange 2i! at its upper edge, which ange in turn has a downwardly directed flange Z I provided with a pair of tangs 22', the latter being adapted to` enter a pair of the holes I4 in the bottom of the'frame member.
An'initial letter 23, or any other ornamentation, can be attached to the plate I9 by any suitable means, such as by soldering or a metal cement or by rivets; the particular mode of attaching the ornament is not shown herein as it forms yno part of this invention.
The mode of attaching the device is shown in Figs. 6,' 7, 8 and 9. In Fig. 6 is shown the plate I6 in the channel frame member before bag covering material has been attached thereto.
In Fig. '7 is shown a downwardly directed 'llange 2| inserted in the pocket in plate I6 and wall I3 and also bag covering material 2li inserted in the channels.
This operation is performed by the bag manufacturer, Who inserts the flange 2| merely for the purpose of preserving the space between plate I6 and wall I8 while thev bag covering material is being clamped in the channelled frame member.
After the bag covering material has been securely clamped to the frame member, the` manufacturer of the bag removes the flange 2| and the shop-keeper, who sells the bag directly to the customer, receives the bag as shown in Fig. 8.
When a customer purchases the bag and desires an initial or other ornamentation placed thereon, the shop-keeper attaches a device as shown in Fig. 2 to the frame by passing the tangs 22 through the apertures I4 of the frame member and then bending the tangs over.
The last operation is very simple and can be readily and conveniently performed by unskilled persons.
In some instances a purchaser might desire the attachment of a relatively long name plate to the bag. In such a case two of the attaching devices, as shown in Fig. 2, are applied to a frame member as shown in Fig. 5.
It is necessary, in all handbags, to provide some sort of fastening device for maintaining the bag in a closed position. In Fig. 10, I have shown my attaching device provided with a knob which will' cooperate with the knob xed to the other frame member or a knob on a similar, adjacent attaching device, to maintain the zbag in a closed condition, in a manner well-known. n
From the above description, it will be seen that there has been provided a simple ornament carrying device which can be readily and conveniently attached to a frame member of a hand bag, and whichin no way alters the structure or appearance of the frame member.
VThe attaching device is provided with a plate which depends on the outside of the bag covering material as shown in Fig. l, and to this plate canbe attached initials or any other type of ornamentation as may be desired.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be constructed including many modications, without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-,Pat-
ent, is: n n
l. In combination with an outwardly opening channelled bag frame member having covering material attached thereto,- `said frame member having a plurality of apertures in the bottom wall thereof, a strip having tangs passingl through said apertures, said strip being `attachedto the inner wall of the frame member and having a U-shaped portion to form a pocket with said inner wall, a plate depending downwardly on the outside of the bag covering, said plate having, at its upper' edge, a right angularly directed flange, said flange having a downwardly depending portion provided vwith tangs,` said tangs passing through certain of the apertures-in the bottom wall of the channel, and an `initial letter or other ornamentation attached tosaid plate. l
2,. In combination with an outwardly opening channelled bag frame member, said frame member having apertures in the bottom wall thereof, a plate having attached thereto an initial,
