The present invention relates to web renewing mechanism and more particularly to a novel and improved mechanism which is adapted for making flying pasters with paper webs fed to high speed rotary printing presses.
Objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereinafter and in part will be obvious herefrom, or may be learned by practice with the invention, the same being realized and attained by means of the instrumentalities and combinations pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention consists in the novel parts, constructions, arrangements, combinations and im--' provements herein shown and described.
The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and constituting a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and together with the description, serve to explain the principles of the invention.

The present invention has for its object the provision of a web renewing apparatus and method in which the adhesive for joining the re serve web to the active web is applied to one of the webs after the two webs have been placed in contact. A further object is the provision of a new and improved web-renewing apparatus in which the leading end of the reserve web is joined to the running, or active, web by means of a film or sheet of adhesive while the webs are in movement. Another object is the provision of a web-renewing apparatus in which the application of adhesive to the web is controlled by rotational movement of the reserve web roll.
In accordance with the present embodiment of the invention, the reserve web roll is supported closely adjacent to the running web as the running web is fed to the printing press or 1931, Serial No. 572,064
other web-consuming machine. The reserve web roll is preferably freely rotatable and is brought up to the speed of the running web by frictional contact therewith, after which adhesive is applied to the lead end of the reserve web to cause it to be joined to the running web. In accordance with the present invention, the film or sheet of adhesive is releasably supported on a freely-moving support which is resiliently contacted with the rotating reserve roll, the time of contact preferably being controlled by rotational movement of the reserve roll.
Referring now in detail to the accompanying drawings, and in particular to Figures 1 to 5 thereof illustrating one embodiment of the invention, the web roll supporting means comprises a conventional form of magazine reel in which the active web roll and reserve web roll or rolls are rotatably supported, and by which successive web rolls may be brought into pasting and then running position. As embodied, multi-armed web roll supporting members I are spaced apart to receive the rotatably mounted web rolls A, B and C between them, and supporting members I are rotatably mounted on side frames 2 by means of the main reel shaft 3. The ends of arms I carry web roll engaging chucks 4 rotatably journalled therein and projecting inwardly into supporting engagement with the axial orifices of the web rolls. The details of this mechanism, including the web tensioning devices, side registering devices and reel-arm rotating mechanism, are not shown, as their details form no part of the present invention.
In the drawings, web roll A is the active or running web roll and is shown in running position; web roll B is the reserve web roll in pasting position; and web roll C is the spare web roll which is to be successively moved into pasting, and then running, position by clockwise rotation of the web roll supporting arms I;
Means are provided for contacting the running web 5 with the surface of the reserve web roll B, serving not only to join the webs together after application of the adhesive, but also serving to bring the reserve web roll to the speed of the running web. As embodied, a freely rotatable roller 6 is journalled in bell cranks I which are fixed to a supporting shaft 8 and may be manually moved to move the running web relatively to and into contact with the reserve roll B. Roller 6 is preferably provided with a soft resilient covering, such as sponge rubber, and may be pressed with a considerable degree of pressure against the running web and reserve roll. A short period of contact between the running web 5 and the reserve roll B, under the pressure exerted by roller 6, is sufficient to bring the peripheral speed of the reserve roll up to that of the running web, after which the flying paster may be made.
The adhesive-applying means comprises a freely rotatable roller I0 mounted closely adjacent to the surface of the reserve roll, and which may be moved into contact therewith, to transfer a film or sheet of adhesive supported on the surface of the roller to the lead end of the reserve web roll. To compensate for any unevenness in the surface of the reserve roll, a plurality of these rollers are provided which are individually and resiliently pressed against the reserve roll. As embodied, each of these rollers comprises a cylindrical body I0, having a relatively smooth and uniform surface throughout the major portion of its circumference, and carrying a relatively narrow inset strip of friction material, such as resilient rubber, extending axially throughout the length of the roller. Each of these rollers is individually and freely rotatably journalled at its ends in pairs of arms I2 which are oscillatable upon a common shaft I3 extending from one end of the web roll to the other. Shaft I3 is supported in depending brackets I4 which may be attached to the press frame I5.
For normally holding the adhesive-carrying rollers I0 out of contact with the reserve roll B, shaft I3 is provided with a plurality ofcollars I6 fixed to said shaft and from which pins I! extend laterally to cooperate with stops I8 formed integrally with the arms I2. Stops I8 are normally held against pins H, to hold the arms I2 and rollers III in raised position, by the tension of springs 26, coiled around shaft I3 and having their ends fixed to the arms I2 and collars 2I.
The smooth surfaced portion of the rollers I0 is provided with a relatively thin, and preferably uniform, coating of suitable adhesive, which is retained on the surface of the roller until the roller is contacted with the reserve roll, at which time the roller is rotated and the major portion of the adhesive is transferred to the lead end of the reserve web.
For the purpose of insuring a more easy removal of the adhesive from the roller, its surface may be formed of thin copper which is amalgamated with mercuryin the usual manner to provide a slippery surface from which the adhesive may be readily removed substantially as a film.
Weighted means are provided for pressing the adhesive-bearing rollers against the surface of the reserve roll, to start them in rotation and to transfer the film of adhesive from the roller to the reserve web. For this purpose, a lever 23 is fixed to one end of shaft I3 and is connected by link 24 with a weighted hand lever 25 pivotally mounted on the main reel shaft 3. Lever 25,-near its outer end, is provided with a handle 26 and a removable weight 21; the handle facilitating the raising of the weight, while the removable weight permits substitution of weights to vary the pressure between the rollers and the reserve roll. Lever 23 is also provided with a stop 28 which cooperates with a stop pin 29 projecting from bracket I4, and serves to limit movement of the rollers I0 and the Weigh ed lever 25 while a new web roll is being moved to pasting position.
Means are provided for timing the application of the adhesive to the reserve web by rotational movement of the reserve web roll, so that accuracy of register between the adhesive and the lead end of the reserve web will be insured. For this purpose, a pawl 30 is pivotally mounted on a pin 3| extending inwardly from the reel support 2 and coacts with ratchet teeth 32 formed on the upper portion of the hub of lever 25. Pawl 30 normally holds weighted lever 25 and the set of rollers In in raised position, out of contact with the reserve web roll B.
At one end of the roll supporting mechanism levers 34 are pivotally mounted on their individual pins 35 projecting from lugs formed integrally with the arms and positioned between adjacent arms. At its free end each lever 34 is provided with a slidable pin 35 which may be pushed inwardly and into the path of cam 36 mounted on the outer end of chuck shaft 4.
Near its pivot 35, lever 34 is provided with a shoe 3'! to contact with the extension 38 of pawl 30. Pin 35' and its supporting lever 34 are urged toward cam 36 by means of spring 40 compressed between face 4| on arm I and lug 42 on lever 34. A stop pin 43 projects laterally from the arm I on the other side of lever 34 and limits movement of the lever 34 towards the cam 36, while the pin 35 is normally held out of the path of cam 36 by spring 45, compressed between the head of pin 35 and lever 34. A similar set of levers 34 and cams 36, together with their cooperating mechanism, is provided for each of the web rolls and is mounted upon the corresponding supporting arms I. Rotation of the web roll supporting arms I to bring a new web roll into pasting position. moves the corresponding lever 34 into operative position with respect to pawl 30.
The operation of the above-described mechanism will be apparent from the foregoing, but may be summarized as follows: The web rolls are in the positionshown in Figure l of the drawings, and handle 26 is held in raised position by means of pawl 30, maintaining rollers I0 out of engagement with the surface of the web roll B. The operator then applies the film of adhesive to the surface of rollers I0. After the lead end E of the reserve web roll B has been suitably secured to the reserve roll in the usual manner, and as web roll A approaches exhaustion, the operator presses roller 6 against the running web 5 to contact it with the reserve roll B and bring the reserve roll to the speed of the running Web. When the running roll A is sufiiciently exhausted, the operator pushes pin 35 inwardly and into thev path of cam 36, and as the reserve roll rotates, lever 34 is moved releasing pawl 30. This movement of pawl 30 releases weight 21, rotating shaft I3 and resiliently pressing each roller I 0 against the surface of the reserve roll B. If the lead end of reserve roll B has been properly positioned with respect to cam 36, the friction strips II will be pressed against the extreme end E of the reserve roll, starting rotation of the rollers I0 which will then rotate in unison with the reserve roll and apply their coating of adhesive to the reserve web. Continued rotation of the reserve roll, contacts the lead end of the web, new carrying a film of adhesive, with the running web joining the reserve web thereto, and the remainder of the web from the exhausted roll A may be severed in the usual manner. The operator then raises the weighted lever 25, and rotates the web roll supporting arms I to move the web roll B into'running position, thereby bringing the new reserve roll C into pasting position and correctly positioning the timing lever 34 with respect to the operating lever 38 of pawl 30.
In accordance with a modified embodiment of the invention, illustrated in Figures 6 and 7 of the drawings, the rollers for supporting the film or sheet of adhesive are formed of a plurality of axially spacedand alined discs freely rotatable on a common shaft and provided with means for releasably holding the leading end of the sheet of adhesive. As embodied, each of these rollers comprises a plurality of thin discs 50 spaced apart by means of collars 5| to which they may be welded to prevent their relative rotation. The assembly of discs I50 and collars 5| are mounted upon a shaft I2 and rigidly fixed thereto, and said shaft is journalled for free rotation in arms l2. At one end, each shaft 52 is provided with an arm 54 by which it and the discs 5| may be rotated to correctly position the friction strip with respect to the web roll. Some of the discs 50 are provided with means for releasably holding the lead end of the sheets of adhesive and, as embodied, alternate discs have secured thereto a flexible needlepointed wire 55 which may be mounted on the discs by means of screw 56 and guides 51, the end of the wire being pierced through the sheet of adhesive.
The sheets of adhesive to be applied to the rollers may be of any suitable form, but preferably comprise a sheet of thin flexible material, such as paper, coated on both its sides with thin substantially uniform coating of strong adhesive. Such a sheet can be easily mounted on the discs forming the roller and is readily released therefrom upon contact with the reserve web roll.
The invention in its broader aspects is not limited to the specific mechanisms shown and described but departures may be made therefrom within the scope of the accompanying claims without departing from the principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
What I claim is:
1. Web renewing mechanism including in combination a support for a plurality of web rolls, one an active web roll and another a reserve roll, means for guiding the running web past the reserve web roll, means for deflecting the running web into contact with the reserve roll, a roller mounted adjacent said reserve roll, a sheet of adhesive material supported on said roller and means for pressing the sheet against the roll to position the adhesive on the lead end of the reserve roll.
2. Web renewing mechanism including in combination a support for a plurality of web rolls, one an active web roll and another a reserve roll, means for guiding the running web past the reserve web roll, means for deflecting the running web into contact with the reserve roll, a freely rotatable roller adjacent to said reserve roll, a film of adhesive lightly supported on said roller and means for moving the roller to contact the film with the lead end of the reserve web.
3. Web renewing mechanism including in combination a support for a plurality of web rolls, one an active web roll and another a reserve roll, means for guiding the running web past the reserve web roll, means for deflecting the running web into contact with the reserve roll, a freely rotatable roller adjacent to said reserve roll, a film of adhesive supported on said roller and weighted means for pressing the roller towards said roll.
4. Web renewing mechanism including in combination a support for a plurality of web rolls, one an active web roll and another a reserve roll, means for guiding the running web past the reserve web roll, means for deflecting the running web into contact with the reserve roll, a rotatable roller adjacent to said reserve roll, said roller carrying an adhesive film releasaby secured thereto, and means timed by rotation of said reserve roll for applying the film to the lead end of the reserve web.
5. Web renewing mechanism including in combination a support for a plurality of web rolls, one an active web roll and another a reserve roll, means for guiding the running web past the reserve web roll, means for deflecting the running web into contact with the reserve roll, a freely rotatable roller closely adjacent to one of the webs, a film of adhesive releasably mounted on said roller and means timed by rotation of said reserve roll for applying the film in register with the lead end of the reserve roll.
6. Web renewing mechanism including in combination a support for a plurality of web rolls, one an active web roll and another a reserve web roll, means for moving the running web into contact with the reserve web roll, an adhesive applying roller and weighted means for pressing the adhesive-applying roller against said reserve roll.
7. Web renewing mechanism including in combination a support for a plurality of web rolls, one an active web roll and another a reserve web roll, means for moving the running web into contact with the reserve web roll, an adhesive applying roller and weighted means for pressing the adhesive-applying roller against said reserve roll, the operation of said weighted means being timed by rotational movement of said reserve roll.
8. Web renewing mechanism including in combination a support for a plurality of web rolls, one an active web roll and another a reserve web roll, means for moving the running web into contact with the reserve web roll, means for applying adhesive to the leading end of said reserve roll, weighted means for operating said applying means, and timing means operated by the reserve roll for controlling the operation of the weighted means.
9. Web renewing mechanism including in combination a support for a plurality of web rolls, one an active web roll and another a reserve web roll, means for moving the running web into contact with the reserve web roll, means for applying adhesive to the leading end of the reserve roll, weighted means for operating said applying means and timing means controlling adjacent said reserve roll, a sheet of adhesive material supported on said roller and means for pressing the sheet against the roll to position the adhesive on the lead end of the reserve roll.
11. Web renewing mechanism including in combination a rotatable support for a plurality of web rolls, one an active web roll and another a reserve web roll, whereby the reserve web roll may be moved to active position, means for rotating the reserve web roll, a freely rotatable roller closely adjacent to one of the webs, a film of adhesive releasably mounted on said roller and means timed by rotation of said reserve roll for applying the film in register with the lead end of the reserve roll.
12. Web renewing mechanism including in combination a rotatable support for a plurality of web rolls, one an active web roll and another a reserve web roll, whereby the reserve web roll may be moved to active position, means for rotating the reserve web roll, means for applying adhesive to the leading end of the reserve roll, weighted means for operating said applying means and timing means controlling the operation of the weighted means whereby registration of the adhesive with the end of the reserve roll is insured.
13. Web renewing mechanism including in combination a magazine reel for rotatably supporting an active web roll and a reserve web roll, means for relatively moving the running web with respect to the reserve roll to contact them, a roller mounted adjacent said reserve roll, a sheet of adhesive material supported on said roller and means for pressing the sheet against the roll to position the adhesive on the lead end of the reserve roll.
14. Web renewing mechanism including in combination a magazine reel for rotatably supporting an active web roll and a reserve web roll, means for relatively moving the running web with respect to the reserve roll to contact them, a freely rotatable roller adjacent to said reserve roll, a film of adhesive supported on said roller and weighted means for pressing the roller towards said roll.
15. Web renewing mechanism including in combination a magazine reel for rotatably supporting an active web roll and a reserve web roll, means for relatively moving the running web with respect to the reserve roll to contact them, a rotatable roller adjacent to said reserve roll, said roller carrying an adhesive film releasably secured thereto, and means timed by rotation of said reserve roll for applying the film to the lead end of the reserve web.
16. Web renewing mechanism including in combination a magazine reel for rotatably supporting an active web roll and a. reserve web roll, means for relatively moving the running web with respect to the reserve roll to contact them, means for applying adhesive to the leading end of said reserve roll, weighted means for operating said applying means, and timing means operated by the reserve roll for controlling the operation of the weighted means.

In a web renewing mechanism, the combination of means for supporting a plurality of web rolls, means for rotating said supporting means to bring successive web rolls into running position, web joining means and means for timing the operation of said joining means including a cam rotated by the reserve web roll and a lever movable with said support and adapted to be actuated by said cam.
18. In a web renewing mechanism, the combination of means for supporting a plurality of web rolls, means for rotating said supporting means to bring successive web rolls into running position, web joining means and means for timing the operation of said joining means including cams coaxial with and rotated by said web rolls, a plurality of levers, one for each web roll, mounted on said supporting means and movable therewith and adapted to coact with said cams, and relatively stationary means controlling the operation of said joining means and operated by the lever corresponding to the reserve web roll.
19. In a web renewing mechanism, the combination of means for supporting a plurality of web rolls, means for rotating said supporting means to bring successive web rolls into running position, web joining means and means for timing the operation of said joining means including means preventing operation of said joining means and adapted to remain stationary while said supporting means are rotated, cams coaxial with and rotated by said web rolls, and means for operatively-connecting the cam corresponding to'the reserve web roll with said preventive means.
20. In a web renewing mechanism, the combination of a plurality of axially spaced and alined, thin discs freely rotatable on a common shaft and held against relative rotation, and means for releasably holding a sheet of adhesive material by its leading end on said discs.
21. In a web renewing mechanism, the combination of a freely rotatable roller having a relatively smooth and uniform surface throughout the major portion of its circumference and an inset strip of friction material extending axially of the roller.
22. In a web renewing mechanism, the combination of a roller having a relatively smooth surface and an inset strip of resilient, friction material extending axially of the roller.
23. In a. web renewing mechanism, the combination of a roller, a narrow strip of rubber L inset in the surface of said roller, the remainder of the surface being substantially smooth and uniform.
24. In a web renewing mechanism, the combination of a roller, a narrow strip of rubber inset in the surface of said roller and flush with said roller, the remainder of the surface of said roller being formed of a smooth amalgam.
25. In a web renewing mechanism, the combination of a roller having an amalgamated surface, and a narrow strip of friction material inset in said roller and extending axially thereof.
26. Ina splicing mechanism, the combination with means for supporting the running roll and fresh roll, a roll normally out of contact with the surface of the fresh roll and having thereon a strip of material provided with adhesive on both surfaces, and means for moving the said roll into contact with the surface of the fresh web roll when it is desired to make a splice, whereby the said adhesive strip will be taken from the surface of the roller on which it is mounted by adhesion of the surface of the web roll and whereby, before the completion of the single rotation, thereafter it will join the running web to the fresh web roll.
