This invention relates to gates, and more particularly to a novel hinge construction therefor A primary object of the invention is to pro.- vide a hinge construction which is strong, durable and easy to operataand which permits the gate to automatically gravitate to a closed position after it has been nanually opened. In the latter connection, the opening of the gate may be readily enectedby moving a lever or handle associated with andformin a part of thehinge. further object of the invention is to provide a hinge construction which not only returns the gate-to closed position, but also preliminarily raises or lifts the free end of the gate so that it may readily clear'a latch or keeper which holds the ateclosed.

Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawing. d As will be observed from the drawing, the pres-' ent invention is used in connection with a gate G consisting" of bars Z held together by suitable frame parts or straps and adapted to close an opening defined by the posts or uprights I and 30; The gate proper is mounted on a hinge respectively comprising an upper unit A and a lower unit A both of which are secured to the post I.
The upper hinge unit A includes a gate suspending lever B which is'preferably of angular formation in the respect that it includes horizontal and vertical arm portions connected by an'elbow',
7 and comprises spaced plates 2 and 3'which are pintle 8 is secured to the plate by theclamps 4 and 5 which are in .turn secured to the plates by fastenings 6 and 1 so that the pintle is rigidly carried by the plates '2 and 3 comprising thelever B. The opposite ends of the 'pintle 8' are'pivotally' mounted in the upper and lower downwardly inclined arms 9 and IQ of the bracket I a Thei'gat'e G, including the bars Z, is also proe vided with an; inclined support or pintle bar C which preferably consists of two strips l I located on each "side'of the gate body and having their upper ends l2 brought together and made as one tubular piece as indicated at I3 by brazing or welding. The lower end of the supportC, made up of thestrips H, is also made into one piece as indicatedat l4, thereby to be rotatablysupported by the hinge 'bracket'lS secured to the post I and havin'gthe perforated leaf I6 for receiving the end [def the bar C.
Thelever B, cpmprising the members 2 and 3, is also connected with the inclined pintle 8 by the strap ll which isprovidedat *one end with a loop or eye which receives a fastening" 18 that pierces the members? and'3. The other end of the strip is provided with an opening which receives the shank of the inclined pintle 8, and, willbe observed-from the drawing, the strap l'l lies between'the head of the pintle and the upper surface of the arm 9 of the bracket; The upper end l2 of the member C is arranged between the loop I; of the strap l1 and a fastening (9 providedlwith -a sleeve 20. The upper ex! treil'nit-y Bof'themember C is surrounded by a washer or collar 2|; and a cotter key or the like, 22, transversely-pierces the upper end I3 so as to lock the member 0 with the lever B. Thus, it will be apparent that theupper end of the memher 0 is interlocked with leverB.
The horizontal arm of the lever B isprovided with a lever extension or handle 23 secured thereto by the U-clam- ps 24 and 25 which are initurn secured to the .niembers 2- and 3 of the bolts 26 and 2'! or their 'equivalent.
As will be observed from Figure 1, the free or swinging end of the gate is provided with a latch plate 23 which engages with a keeper bracket 29-carried by the post 30.
I From the foregoing it will be apparent that the gate G is supported on the post I by-the hinge brackets A and A, and due to the angular inclination of member C and pintle 8 with reference to the post l, the gate will normally gravitate to a position to close the opening between the posts I and 30. Due to the fact that the lower ends x of the vertical portions of the arms 2 and 3 are bevelled or inclined as shown in the drawing, and rest or bear on the lower inclined arm l 0 of the bracket, while the pintle 8 is freely pivoted in the arms 9 and I0, it will be seen that when the lever B is moved by manipulating the lever extension 23, the gate G will first be lifted sufiiciently to disengage the parts 28 and 29. Continued movement of the lever B through the medium of the lever extension 23 will cause the entire gate to swing away from the post 30 and move out of obstructing relation with reference to posts I and 30. When pull or pressure on lever B through extension 23 is released, the weight of the gate and the inclination of the pintle 8, will causethe gate to gravitate to its closed position. Just prior to its full closing movement, the gate will bepositioned sufficiently above keeper 2!! so that the latch plate 28 may engage therewith, and the final movement of the lever B to its normal position will result in the gate settling down to its fully closed position and with the elements 28 and 29 engaged.
With further reference to the lifting or the raising of the gate to disengage members 28 and 29, it will of course be understood that since the upper end l2l3 of lever C is provided with the collar 2| which rests on the upper edge of the horizontal arm of the lever B, any upward movement or elevation of lever B due to its being turned or rotated on the pintle 8,'will cause the gate to be lifted slightly to effect disengagement of parts 28 and 29. As the lever B moves, it will of course be understood that the camming effect between parts :1: and I0 may assist'the pintle 8 to move upwardly in the arms 9 and Ill and the gate G will be lifted sufficiently to disengage members 28 and 29.
The extension 23 of lever B may be operated by hand or through the medium of a rope or cable accessible at a convenient distance from the position of the gate in the roadway.
Without further description it is thought that the features and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and it will of course be understood, that changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to,.without departing from the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:-
1. A gateway having an inclined member, and upper and lower hinge mounting elements for said inclined member, said upper hinge mounting member including a bracket having downwardly inclined arms, a lever including horizontal and vertical portions for engaging and supporting said inclined member of the gate, a pintle member rigidly carried by said lever and inclined with reference to the post to which it is attached, said pintle member being rigidly carried by said lever, and the lower ends of said vertical arm of the lever resting on the lower inclined arm or the bracket.
2. A gateway including in combination, a pair of gate posts, a gate having an inclined member and mounted between said gate posts, upper and lower hinge mounting elements for supporting said inclined member of the gate, said upper hinge mounting element comprising a bracket secured to one of the posts and having downwardly inclined arms, a lever including horizontal and vertical portions, the former engaging and supporting the inclined member of the gate, and a pintle inclined with reference to the gate posts and carried by the vertical portion of the lever, said pintle being pivotally mounted in said upper and lower inclined arms of the bracket.
3. A gateway including in combination, a pair of spaced gate posts, a keeper carried by one of said gate posts, upper and lower hinge mounting elements carried by the other of said gate posts, a gate including an inclined member having its lower end supported in said lower mounting elements and its upper end supported in said upper mounting element, said upper mounting element including a bracket carried by one of the gate posts and having downwardly inclined arms, and
-a lever including horizontal and vertical portions, the former engaging and supporting said inclined member of the gate, a pintle rigidly carried by the vertical portion of the lever member and mounted in the upper and lower arms of the bracket, means on the lower end of the vertical portion of the lever for cooperating with the lower inclined arm of the bracket to lift the lever and gate supported thereby during the preliminary movement of the lever about the pintle to disengage the'gate from said keeper element.
4. A gateway including in combination, a pair of spaced gate posts, a keeper carried by one of said gate posts, upper and lower hinge mounting elements carried by the other of said gate posts, a gate including an inclined member having its lower end supported in said lower mounting element and its upper end supported in said upper mountingelement, said upper mounting element including a bracket carried by one of the gate posts and having downwardly inclined arms, and a lever including horizontal and vertical portions, the former engaging and supporting said inclined member of the gate, a pintle rigidly carried by the vertical portion of the lever member and mounted in the upper and lower arms of the bracket, means on the lower end of the vertical portion of the lever for cooperating with the lower inclined arm of the bracket to lift the lever and gate supported thereby during the prelimi-- nary movement of the' lever about the pintle, thereby to disengage the gate from said keeper element, a supporting strap having one end engaging the pintle and its opposite end engaging the horizontal portion of the lever member, and a lever extension carried by the horizontal portion of said lever.
5. A gateway including in combination, a pair of spaced gate posts, a keeper carried by one of said gate posts, upper and lower hinge mounting elements carried by the other of said gate posts, a gate including an inclined member having its lower end supported in said lower mounting element and its upper end supported in said upper mounting element, said upper mounting element including a bracket carried by one of the gate posts and having downwardly inclined arms, and a lever including horizontal and vertical portions, the former engaging and supporting said inclined member of the gate, said lever member comprising spaced angle plates held together by fastenings passing therethrough and receiving therebetween the upper end of said inclined member of the gate, a pintle rigidly secured between the spaced plates of the lever and having its opposite ends pivoted in the inclined arms of the bracket, the lower ends of the vertical portion of said lever being bevelled and resting on the lower inclined arm of the bracket whereby when the lever is moved on the pintle in the bracket, the inclined member on the gate will be lifted to disengage the keeper element on one of the gate posts.
