(Cl. 215-46) This invention relates to closures for bottles or other containers having a neck or mouth and has for its object the provision of a closure which is simple in construction, is readily applied to bottles and the like, and is easily removable from said bottles and the like without necessitating the use of an opener.
With the above object in view, the invention consists of a closure constituted by a dished metal cap having a pair of oppositely disposed lugs depending from the rim of the cap, a vertically disexerted on the cap in an upward direction, and at right angles to the groove-aforesaid, said cap is caused to buckle on itself along the said groove, the slots, by opening out, allowing of such buckling.
In order that the invention may be readily understood, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying sheet of drawings where:-

In carrying out the invention, and referring flrsttoFigures l to3 of the drawing, andfora round mouthed bottle or the like, the closure or cap consists of a circular metal disc having a vertically corrugated rim I for placement on the bottle or like mouth, and a pair of diametrically opposite lugs 2 depending from the rim I aforesaid, each lug 2 having formed therein a vertically disposed slot 3 which extends into that part of the'rinr I thereabove, said slots 3 being aligned with a groove or depresion 4 which extends across the cap and in the upper face 5 thereof.
The slotted lugs 2 serve to grip the bottle or the like, and to facilitate their upward turning of the said 1118 may be formed each with a hori-- zontally disp groove 6 in its outer face, the
i. e. the rim is divided so that, when pressure is groove 6 being shown in dotted lines in Figure 1. when said lugs 2 are upwardly turned flat against the rim I of the cap, the slots 3 of said lugs 2 present open lower ends, i. e., the rim I is divided, as shown in Figure 2, so that when pres- 5 sure is exerted on the cap, in an upward direction and at right angles to the groove or depression 4 in the upper face 5 of the cap, the cap Is caused to buckle on itself along the said groove or depression 4, as shown in Figure '3, the slots 8, by opening out, allowing of such buckling.
Referring now to the closure or can shown in Figure 4 of the drawing, the rim I of the said cap is extended beyond its normal bottom (dotand-dash line 1), to form a skirt 8, and in the rim portion are provided indentations or depressions 9, whilst in the skirt 8 are formed a pair of diametrically opposite gripping lugs 2.
Each lug 2 is formed by slitting the skirt 8 with two spaced-apart vertically disposed slits ll leaving a lug portion 2 therebetween, and in each lug 2 there is formed a vertically disposed slot 3 which extends into the cap rim'l. A groove 4 formed in and extending across the upper face 5 of the cap is aligned with the upper ends of. the slots 3, and a horizontally disposed groove 6 is formed in the outer face of each lug 2 and at the upper ends of the slits III aforesaid.
The invention is also applicable for a square or rectangular -mouthed bottle or the like in which case the cap is correspondingly shaped and has two opposite sides provided each with two spaced-apart slotted lugs, the twooppositely dis-'- posed lugs of each pair being aligned with a groove in theupper face of the cap, whilst the other opposite sides of the cap may be provided with two spaced-apart coiled operating lugs.
I claim: I 1'. In a closure for bottles or other containers, 40 consisting of a dished metal cap having a pair of oppositely disposed lugs depending from the rim of the cap, a groove extending transversely across the outer face of each lug and aligned with the bottom of the cap rim, and a groove formed. in and extending across the upper face of the cap and aligned with the upper ends of the said slots, a construction having a pair of vertical slots formed in the rim of the cap and aligned with the lugs, said .slots extending across the transverse grooves of the lugs and into the lugs for a distance substantially equal to the length of their portions contained in the cap rim, and narrow solid connecting portions of substantially equal width disposed above and below the vertical slots 65 and adapted to overlie one another when the lug is bent upwardly about its transverse groove.
2. A closure for bottles or other containers consisting of a dished metal cap having a skirt forming an extension of the cap rim for placement over a bottle or like mouth, indentations formed in the cap rim and above the normal bottom thereof for gripping engagement with the bottle or like neck, a pair of diametrically opposite lugs in said skirt, each of said lugs being formed by vertically slitting said skirt with two spaced-apart slits leaving a lug portion therebetween, a pair of vertical slots formed in the rim of the cap and aligned with the lugs and er:- tending across transverse grooves 01- the lugs and into the lugs for a distance substantially equal to the length" of their portions contained in the cap rim, narrow solid connecting portions of substantially equal width above and below the slots, said connecting portions being adapted to overlie one another when the lug is bent up- ,wardly about the transverse groove, a groove formed in and extending across the upper face of the cap and aligned with the upper ends of slots aforesaid.
