(ci. 194-1) l end 24 of the chute-s xedportion 2,-the coin falls A The present invention relates to coin-controlled mechanisms, such as vending machines; automatic' sound-reproducing instruments and the like; and its object is to provide improved 5 means for operating or initiating the operation` of the operative parts of a coinfcontrolled mechanism partially sectioned on line 1-1 of- Figure 3, contained in a suitable casing one of` whose walls is shown in vertical section; `Figure 2 is a like view of -a portion thereof but showing theparts in another position; and

Figure 3 is a sectional view thereof taken on line 3-3 of Figure l.

In the interior of a suitable casing I is mounted 2;.' the coin chute which comprises a fixed portion Y 2 and a portion 3 swingably mounted at 4 in one oi the casings vertical walls 5 and having a handle 6 and a coin-receiving slot 'I outside .the casing. A -coin 8 being inserted into this slot falls in the chutes portion-3 into held engagement with the bight 9 of a spring I0 surrounding chute portion 3 near its vent Il. As this chute portion is swung inwardly by its handle 6, the upper edge I2 of the coin in such movement striking the end I3 of a slot I4 in an arm member I5 swingably mounted at I 6,- (in which slot the coin has been held) swings said arm member upwardly toV the `position seen in Figure 2 and out of the locking engagement of its shoulder I1 with the inner side I8 of chute portion 3 immediately belowV the slot I9 through which said arm I5 slidably'extends. 1

The chute portion 3 being thus unlocked and free to swing farther inwardly, the coin is ear- 43 ried thereby to a position wherein the cam edge 20 of the rib 2I` of said arm memberpresses the coin downwardly by the'sliding engagement of Athe arm member -with the upper end 22 of slot I9, thus expanding or straightening spring IIJ to ou release its bight 9 from the coin, the arm member sliding in this movement of chute portion 3 in the lateral extensions 23 of chute portion 3. We claim 1. In a coindcontrolled machine: 'a coin chute swingable to a position conveying'aV coin therein to the mechanism operated thereby, having means for releasably retaining the coin; an element swingable by the swinging of the chute to its said position for releasing the coin 'from said engaging the coin therein to release the same.

Ina coin-controlled machinef a coin .chute swingable to a position conveying a coin therein to the mechanism operated thereby, having means for `releasablyretaining the coin; an element mounted extraneously of the chute and having a cam, movable by said swinging ofthe chute to a position of said element wherein its cam en gages the coin and releases the same from said retaining means.

5. In a coin-controlled machine: a coin chute movable to a position conveying a coin therein to the mechanism operated thereby, having means for releasably retaining` the coin; an element mounted extraneously of the chute and movable by said movement ofthe chute to a position of said element wherein it engages the coin and releases the same from said retaining means.

6. In a coin-controlled machine: -a coin chute movable to a position conveying a coin therein to the mechanism operated thereby, having a spring for releasably retaining the coin; an element movable by the movement of the chute to a position of said element wherein it engages the coin and expands the spring to release the same from the coin,

7. In a coincontrolled machine: a coin chute swingable to an extreme position conveying a coin therein to the mechanism operated thereby, having means for releasably retaining the coin; means for holding the chute to a limited swung position releasable by the engagement of the coin with said means in the limited movement of the chute, and for releasing the coin from said retaining means in the extreme position of the chute.

8. In a coin-controlled machine: a coin chute swingable to an extreme'positon conveying a coin therein to the mechanism operated thereby, having a spring releasably retaining the coin; an element extending into the chute having a slot receiving the coin therein, a shoulder engaging the chute to hold the same to a limited movement and a cam engaging the coin and moving the same to vexpand the spring and release the same from the coin in the extreme' position of the chute, said element being moveable by engagement of the coin therewith in said limited movement and movable by the movement of the chute to extreme position to cause the cam to engage and release the coin.
