This invention relates "generally. to smoking pipes, and more specifically to smoking pipescone. structed and arranged so. as to provide for sanitary use thereof, the predominant object of- 5 the invention being to produce an improved smoking pipewhich'includes as. a part thereof a-readily accessible filtering element .Whichprevents nicotine from reaching the mouth; of the userof the improved pipe;
Another object of the inventionis to provide a smoking pipe withr means for controlling saliva" the invention, A designates the =improyed'pipe I portion I of the pipe A, and at its lower end an generally. The; pipe Av includes a body portion I having a stem-receiving portion 2,,a hollow stem 3, and .atobacco-receiving bowl 4 Thegbody portion, I is provided with a cavity'5 'intowhich an extension 6 formed at the base of the bowl 4, is extended, said cavity and said, extension being of such relative diameters thattight frictional contact is provided betweenthe-side face of the extension and the wall of the cavity, whereby the bowl is firmlysecured to the body portion'of the pipe. Instead of providing a' frictionaljoint between the extension 6 offthe'bowl 4 andthewall of the cavity 5, as described,thesepartsmay be provided with screw -threads, if desired, so as to secure the bowl to the body portion of the pipe. The cavity 5 extends downwardlyin the body annular shoulder I is provided which separates the cavity 5 from a second cavity 8 that is located below the cavity 5 and is of less diameter than said cavity 5. This second cavity 8 terminates at its lower end in an annular shoulder 9 which separates the cavity 8 from a bottom chamber I0 that preferably is more or less dishshaped, as illustrated, because of the presence of a curved annular side wall I0. Associated with thecavity Band the bottom chamber I0 is a removable lining element II which is so shaped and proportioned as to contact closely with the wall I Supported within the portion of element I0..which isdisposed in the cavity .8 and resting upon the shouldenlof, said lining ele:-j,c i
ment is a filtering e1ementiI3. Theifiltering ele: f
ment I3.. is formed of fiber: or any other suitable material, said filtering element preferablybeing in the form of a disk, asshown most clearly in Fig.2, and being provided Iwith-acentrallylocated aperture I4. Also, the outer annularflface of said filtering'element contacts closely-with the inner face of theportion of the lining element I0 located above the, shoulder'g, so as to isolate the cavity 5 and the chamber I Il;from each ther.-,.
Extended downwardly from ;the' extension 6 of thebowl 4 a portion I5 which is provided with a lowerportion Ifi, of, reduceddiametien'a horizontaLannularshoulder I! being provided at the point wheretlieportions l5 and I6 meet;
Theportion I6 is extended through the aperture I4 formed centrally through the filtering element I 3 and the shoulder I1 contacts with the top face of said filtering element. Also, a smokepassageway I8, which communicates with the cavity in the bowl 4, isformed longitudinally through the portions 7 I 5 and I Band communicates at its'lower end with the lower chamber Ill. The'presenceof the portion I 5 withinthe cavity5 produces Within said cavityan annular spaceiIs whichis shown most clearly'in-Fig. '2. r
The stem 3 of the pipe A includes a reduced portion 3' whichis extended into and,.i's. fric tionally. engaged by the stem-securing portion 2 of the body. portion I of the pipe, and, formedin the inner end portionfofsaid stem isa irce ssifl The recess 20 receivesjan enlarged end portion Z'I" of an elongated element 22 which extends forwardly from said recess and passes through -I an opening 23 formed through a portion I of the body portion I of the pipe. The element 22 includes a shoulder 24 which contacts with the inner end face of the stem 3. Also, the rear'portion of the element 22 is provided with a passageway 25 which communicates with the smoke passageway 3 formed through the stem 3, and the .45
forward portion of said element is provided with a trough which communicates with the passageway 25.
, In the'use of the improved pipe, smoke is drawn 7 from thebowl of the pipe downwardly through the smoke passageway I8 and into the lower chamber Ill, thesmoke then passing'through the filtering element I3 into the annular space I9, whereby inpurities are removed therefrom. From the space I 9 the smoke passes through the opening 23 into the space 21, whence said smoke passes bowl'is displaced from the body portion'l.
filtering element 13 may then be-removed and the lining element I I may also be removed and cleaned v I or replaced by anew lining e1ementflA-new 7 through the passageways and 3 to the mouth of the user of the pipe. Any saliva which finds way into the pipe through the stem thereof moves irom the smoke passageway 3'! of the stem 3 through the passageway 25 of the element 22 and along the tr0ugh26,'said saliva; being discharged from said trough onto the top surface of the filtering element l3 by which it is absorbed.
When it is necessary to clean the improved pipe the stemfl3 and ele'ment 22 are removed and the The filtering element is thenarranged in place, and
after the smoke passagewayl'fl atlthe base otthe' bowl is cleaned out by moving the reduced portion of the element 22through said smoke passageway,
the bowl 4, element 22, and stem}; arenreas lsembled, as shownin Figs. and 2, to produce the complete pipe;
I 1 it isapparent-'from'-the foregoing that the 1 mproved pipe feapable of being maintained in a sanitary condition with'very little eifort; whereby v ,the pleasure of-.pipe;smoking will be greatly in- V creased.
