Description

G. SEYMER.
Billiard-Cue.
.No.199,321. Pa tented Jan. 15,1s7s.
- CARL SEYMER, CF BERLIN, GERMANY,
ASSIGNOR T0 RICHARD HORSTMANN,
OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BlLLlARD-GUES.
Specification forming pprt cf Letters Patent N0 199,321, dated J anuary 15, 1878; application filed Nowember 20, 18771 Be it known tha-t I, OARL SEYMER, of the City 0f Berlin, Empire 0f Germany, have'in- -vented an Improvement in Billiard-Oues, 0f
which the f0110w1'11 g is a specification:
This invention eonsists in an improved means for fa-stening the tips 01 leather cushions upon the ends of billiard-cnes, whereby the use of glue 01 other adhesive material is 'dispensed wir-h, and said. tips 01 cushions may be removed and applied With great facility, all of which is t00 partieularly hereinafter sei: fort-h t0 need further preliminary description.
The accompanying drawings fully illustrate this invenm'on, and show, in Figure l, in elevation, the end 0f a billiard-cue having my improved tipiastener applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the tip 0r cushion removed and the said fastener opened 01 extended. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal seetion 0f Fig. l; Fig.4 a
sim1'lar view, but taken through the fastening- 100113 e. Fig. 5 shows the sliding shell O removed. Fig. 6 is a plan 01 t0p view of the same, and Fig. 7 a cross-seetion thereof 011 the 11'ne 00 00 of Fig. 5.
- The leather oushions 01 tips.of bil]ia-rd-cues are commonly fastened upon theif ends by means of glue 01 a similar composition, which will adhere 130 bot-h the tip 01 cnshionand the end of the eue.
In pmetice tips 01 cushions so fastened in p1ace' am frequently displaced by the shock of impact eaused in the use of the cues, 01, when not so displaced, frequently require to be renew ed, either by reason 0f defects 01 by wem: fing out. In such eases the end 0f the cue require's to be eamefully cleaned by removing the dry g1ue, 'and a, new and even surface prepared f01 the reception of the new tip or cushionwhieh, after being properly secured by g1uing, must be set away f0r a 'day 01 more 120 become perfeetly dry before it 02m be used.
This operation of applying new tips, while in itse1f occupying 1nuch time m1d considerab1e 1abor, is a serious inco'nvenience, inasmuchas it not only deprives one of the use of aparticular cue, but neeessitates 1;he keeping 0f a large number of extra eues 011 band.
By my invention the cue-tip may be removed and a new 0 ne supplied in an inconsiderable Space 0f time, thus enabling a player to coutinue the use 0f the same cue, as Will 110W be explained. v
The eue Bis supplied with a tube 01 case A, open ab both ends, and tapered tqcorrespond with the shape 0f the cue.
This case A may be made 0f meta1, wood, horn, ivory, bone, vulcanized rubber, 01 sinni- 1ar material, and is fastened 011 the end 0f the cue (which is eut away t0 form a tenon t0 receive it) by mea ns of one 01 more screws, as b I), this mode of fastening being adopt@d as preferable to a screw-joint, for the reasonthat the latter would soon become spoiled by the shock which the cue receives in its use.
Within this ease A a shelli0 made 0f one of the aforesaid materials, 01 some other possessing the qualioy of lightness, is fitc-ed. so that i may slide freely, its movements therein being limited by a stop, g, whieh Tuns in a s1ot, h, cut in thecase A, and fix ed1y he1d in i1:s innermost 01' outermost adjustment by means 0f a spring-holt, e, whieh enters holes Z i in said Gase A. 'lhis holt e is guided in it's movement-s by a stem which plays in h01es 01115 in the Walls 0f the shell O, and its aetuatingspring d embraees said ste1'n, and bears againgt the head 0 f said holt und one Wall 0f the case, as in Fig. 4.
Tl1e top 0f the sliding she1l O is cut away 1:0 form a recess, t11e bottom 0 a-nd sides 0f which form a seat f0r thetip or 1621/51181 m. This shell Ois providecr with several longitudinal grooves, n, which are cut through the Walls 0f the shell, s2we m; the bottom, where they form pivotal seats f0r arms 0. These arms 1 are 0f su h form as t0 provide a jaw 01 catch ab their upper ends, an inwamdly-prqjecting knee in the midd1e, und a curved bend a1; their lower ends, by which they a-re seated in the shell O. Inside of the shell O, and between t he projecting knees 0f ohe arn1s r, it is preferab1e so introduce a rubber 0r simila;r elastie core, (not shown) the ae'oion of whieh will be t0 press said arms ouoward.
If it is desired t0 attaeh a tip 01' cushion,m, to this improved cue, the fastening-bolt e is pressed inward by 2m pointed instrument, so zus 1:0 re1ease its hold in the hole a, whereupon the shel1 O may be s1id, outward until the fastenend of the sliding shell C, the festening-bolt:
e1's released from the hole l end the shell O pressed into the eese A until the seid b0lt e engeges in the hole z, es in Figs. 1 3, 4which movement of the shell (J will ceuse the erms 1 to be pressed inwerdly end their jewed upper ends t0 enter end seize the seid tip or eushion, end thus securely end firmly ret-ein it in plece, es in Fig. 3.
If :it is desired 1:0 entirely remove the seid sliding shell O, it mey be done by removing the screw g.
In order t0 lessen the shoek 0f impeet, it is desireble (0 introduee e leether, indie-rubber, 0r similer cushion, P, between the eue-stick B end the seid shell O.
VVhet is eleimed is- 1. A billierd-cue provided with e mechenieel tip-festening device, consistingessentielly, of e sliding shell eerrying j ews whieh ere eutometicelly spreed 01 extended eo reeeive the tip 0r eushion, end elosed to gresp the S3JIIG, by the movements 0f seid sliding shell out 0f end into the eese A, ell substentielly es deseri=bed.
22, The combinetion, with e cue-stiek, of e sliding shell, O, provided with meens fox: holdi11g e tip, end with devices for seeur1ng lt i either extended from er pressed into conteet with the cue-stiek, substentielly es described.
3. The eombinetion, With the grooved sliding shell C, 0f the erms r, heving jewed upper ends, end bent t0 form knees, substentielly es deseribed.
4. 'lhe combinetion, With the slidi'ng shell O end its erms 1', 0f the festening-bolt e end eese A, substentielly es deseribed.
In testimony whereof I heve signed my neme to this speeificetion in the presenee ef' tw0 subscribingwitnesses.
