Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
E. FOSTER, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,922, dated Apr1 13, 1858.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ELBRIDGE FOSTER, of the city of Hartford, county Of Hartford, and State Of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Modes of Constructing Spring Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a correct description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a peculiar arrangement Of elastic wood springs, constructed in the manner as shown in drawings Figs. l-2-3- `To enable Others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and Operation.
The drawing- Fig 1 is a side View of t-he bottom frame springs &c. Fig. 2 is an end view of dit-to ditto. Fig. 3 is a plan showing slats and frame.
I make a right angled frame of wood, A, of the proper size that may be required to lit inside of a bedstead or such other position as the case may be.
To the middle of each side of the frame A, I alii); by means of angular blocks D, D, E, and bolts or by other suitable devices, a long bent spring B, B, and arrange it so that its two arms B, B, may extend Or incline upward respectively toward two head and foot bars F, F. The outer ends of the spring, I fasten Or secure to the said bars, the whole being as shown in Fig. 1. The bars or pieces, F, F, are tO be made of suitable size to support a series of spring slats G, Gr, disposed On them as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3. To the middle part of the lower side of each bar, F, another spring B, B, is aixed at its middle by blocks D, D, E, and bolts or other suitable means and has its arms inclining downward toward the sides Of the frame A, as shown in Fig. 2.
The slats G, are laid on the head and foot piece F F, loosely, except the two outer slats, which are fastened at one end by means of a pin through them to keep them in their places-and a pin H, is put in the foot piece inside of the two outer slats to keep them all apart and still allow the sliding of the head and foot piece caused by the movement and vibration of the springs.
The slats are all combined together in their proper places by means of a strip Or strips ss, Of webbing Or some similar de vice, and are all attached together when taken Off, and can be so easily worked up or down if desired.
The utility of this method of making bed bottoms, consists in its economy of construc tion and pleasant elasticity of its operation. It can be conveniently placed for use in either Old or new bedstead of any size or pattern. It can also be used separately from any bedstead, On the Hoor, or any other position. It will answer for the frame of an ottoman lounge Or settee.
The neatness, economy and compactness of the whole is such as to leave no chance for harboring insects Of any kind or dust.
From the above, it will be seen that the springs On the sides of the frame A, have their middle parts afliXed directly tO such frame, while the springs at the ends of the frame have their middle parts aiixed to the bars, F, F. Here is an arrangement, which not only allows the ends of the side and end springs, to be placed out of the way of, and work independently of each other but affords to the bed foundation a ready means of tilting cornerwise.
I do not claim the peculiar spring, but
IVh-at I do claim is- The arrangement Of the side and end springs, that is so that, while one set Of springs shall be attached at the middle parts of each tothe frame A, and be made to bear at their ends against the bars, F, F, the other set shall be attached at. their middle parts to the bars F, F, and be made to bear at their ends on the frame A.
