Each of the drums 56, 60 is mounted for rotative movement upon a rod 62 which is secured by a nut 64 to bosses 66 of the main frame 50. Each of the drums 56, 60 is frictionally held in engagement with its respective boss 66 against free rotation by a spring 68 one end of which carries a friction block wand theother end of whichabuts against the enlarged head of the rod 62.
To insure that the U-shaped or looped portion 32 may be of predetermined length, the machine is provided with a gage or arm 72 (Fig. 1) which is pivoted on a pin 74 carried by the main frame and which, during the operation of the machine,
is normally thrown back to the position shown in Fig. 1. Hinged to the upper end of the arm '72 is an apron '76 which assumes a vertical position when the arm 72 has been moved into its lowered "position such as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The lower end 78 of the arm 72 is eccentrically mounted upon the pin '74 and when the arm 72 is in its raised position the end '78 engages the clamp 34 which is hinged at 80 to the main frame and forces the knife 30 against the main frame thereby to hold the upper end of the U-shaped or looped portion 32 of the knife against movement. When the arm 72 is swung to a forward or lowered position, the lower end 78 thereof is moved away from the clamp 34 and permits a pair of feed rolls 82, 84 which are operated by a thumb screw 85 and are constructed of rubber or like material, to draw a section of the knife 30 from the drum 56 of the machine.
The jaw portions 38 may be forced together to clamp the lower end of the U-shaped portion 32 of the knife for reciprocating the same lengthwise or may be permitted to release the knife 30 preparatory to sliding the same lengthwise. The split jaw portion 38' of the hollow rod 36 flares (Fig. 5) toward the front face of the rod and is shaped for reception in a tapered recess 86 formed in the forward end of a plunger 88 which is mounted for reciprocation in the frame of the through an eccentric 96 carried by a transversely extending shaft 98 which is driven by a belt 100 connected to an electric motor 102.
In order to slide the hollow rod 36 and its split jaw portion 38 relatively to the plunger 88 to release the knife 30 or toclamp the same, the rod 36 is provided with a pair of axially spaced collars 104, 106 (Fig. 1) adapted to receive a cam 108 which .is eccentrically mounted upon a pin 110 carried by the block 92 and is provided with a handle 112 for moving the collars 104, 106 and therefore the rod 36 with respect to the block 92.
The gage 46 comprises angularly disposed members provided with faces 114, 116 (Fig. 5) which are arranged to engage the rim of the attaching face 26 of the covered heel. The gage 48, which may also be referred to as a rest,-serves as aguard to prevent damaging the heel and may also be utilized toxassist the gage 46 in positioning the margin 20 of the cover relatively to the braced section 44 of the cutter 30. It will be noted that the member 40 which braces the outside face of the knife 30 has its knife-engaging face 118 inclined to the face 114 of the gage, the forward end of the inclined face 118 being slightly spaced from the face 116. In order to brace the knife 30 against the pressure of the heel 24 the member 46 is raised at both sides of the surface 118 to form a notch 119 for receiving the cutter 30, the blunt edge of which engages the member asthe heel is moved past the cutter.
A work support 120 for carrying the combined gage and cutter-bracing member may be adjusted in directions of arrows 122 (Fig. 1) relatively to the U-shaped portion 32 of the cutter 30 after releasing a set screw 124, which is in threaded relation with the mainframe and the end of which engages a spline 126, by turning a thumb screw 128 which is journaled in the main frame and turns a gear 130 constructed and arranged to mesh with a rack 132 of an arm 134. The work support 120 may be raised or lowered relatively to the U-shaped cutting portion 32 by turning a thumb nut 136 in threaded relation with a post 138 of a platform 140, which post passes through a cylindrical recess of a bifurcated portion 142 of the arm 134. The support 120 is provided with arcuate flanges 144 constructed and arranged to cooperate with correspondingly shaped recesses of the platform and may be adjusted along the recesses by turning a worm 146 which is in meshing relation with a rack 148 on the bottom face of the support 120. The gage 46 may be adjusted relatively to the support 120 byturning a thumb screw 150 in threaded relation with a screw 152 carried by the gage 46, which screw slides through a cylindrical bore of the support 120. It will be clear from the foregoing that the gage 46 may be moved to various positions relatively to the U-shaped portion in accordance with the work being trimmed in the machine. a I
In order to skive the margins of the cover of the heel to a feather edge the operator after properly adjusting the gages 46, 48 and insuring that the braced section 44 of the. U-shaped portion is sharp, presents the heel to the knife as shown in Fig. 5 and turns the heel progressively to move the margin 20 past the braced section 44 of the knife thereby to skive the margin to a'feather edge.
Having thus described'my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A trimming machine having, in'combination,
imposed shoe partsrelatively to the flexed portion of the cutter, and mechanism to oscillate said flexed portion of the cutter thereby to-skive one of. saidshoe parts guided by said means past said portion. I
2. Atrimming machine having, in combination, a flexible cutter, means for bending the cutter to provide a flexed portion thereof, a clamp to secure a portion. of the cutter against movement, means to position a shoe part relatively to the flexed portion of the cutter, and mechanism to oscillate the flexed portion of the cutter..

a flexible cutting blade having a loop portion,
members to brace a section of the loop portion against substantial distortion under pressure of ashoe part, meansto'position the shoe part relatively tosaid section of the blade, means to hold the: blade stationary at one end of the loop portion, and mechanism to reciprocate portions of the blade at the other end of the loop portion thereby to trim the shoe part as it is moved past the blade.
4. A trimmingmachine having, in combination, a flexible cutting blade, 'means to flex the blade to provide a loop portion, spaced members arranged at opposite sides respectively of the loop portion of. the blade to brace a section of the blade, a clamp constructed and arranged to hold a portion of the blade stationary, and mechanism to reciprocate another part of the cutting blade.
5. A trimming machine having, in combination, a flexible cutting blade, means to flex the blade to form a loop portion, members spaced lengthwise and arranged at opposite sides of the blade to brace a section of the loop portion, a clamp to secure one end of the loop portion against movement, means to position one of two superimposed shoe parts relatively to. the braced section ofthe blade, and mechanism to reciprocate the braced section of the loop portion.

A trimming machine having, in combination, a flexible strip knife, means by which the end portions thereof are maintained in the form of coils from one of which the knife may be fed to the other,mechanism constructed and arranged to reciprocate an intermediate portion of the knife relatively to the coils, and means arranged to control the presentation of a work piece to.
said intermediate portion of the knife.
7. A trimming machine having, in combination, a flexible strip knife, means by which the end portions thereof are maintained in the form of coils from one of which the knife may be fed to the. other, means to flex an intermediate portion of the knife, mechanism arranged to impart longitudinal reciprocation to said intermediate portion of the knife, and means arranged to control presentation of a shoe part to said intermediate portion of the knife thereby to trim said shoe part by a skiving cut. 4
8. A trimming machine having, in combination,

A trimming machinehaving, in combination, a flexible strip knife, magazines to carry the end portions respectively of the knife and from one of which the knife may be fed to the other, means to flex an intermediate portion of the knife to provide a trimming portion thereof, clamping mechanism to secure one part of the intermediate portion of the knife against movement, and a member to reciprocate another part ofv the intermediate portion of the knife to skive a portion of a cover which has been secured to a heel as the heel is moved past said trimming portion, said member being constructed and arranged to clamp the knife, and also to release the knife preparatory to moving the same lengthwise" to replace a dull section of the knife by a sharp section.
15. A trimming machine having, in combination, a flexible strip knife, means by which the end portions of the knife are maintained in the form of coils from one of which the knife may be fed to the other, means to flex an intermediate portion of the knife, a member to clamp one part of the intermediate portion of the knife against movement, mechanism to reciprocate another part of the intermediate portion of the knife, and means to control the presentation of a work piece to said intermediate portion of the knife, said mechanism comprising a cam-operated clamp to secure the knife for movement with the mechanism or to release the knife with respect to such mechanism.
16. A trimming machine having, in combination, a flexible strip knife, means by which the end portions of the knife are maintained in the form of coils from one of which the knife may be fed to the other, means to flex an intermediate portion of the knife, a member to clamp one part ofthe intermediate portion of the knife against movement, mechanism to reciprocate another part of the intermediate portion of the knife, and means to control the presentation of a work piece to said intermediate portion of the knife, said mechanism comprising a sleeve having a flared portion, a split plunger comprising a wedge portion mounted within the sleeve and adjustable relatively to the same, and a cam to adjust the plunger relatively to the sleeve to cause the wedge-shaped portion of the plunger to engage the flared portion of the sleeve and thereby to clamp the knife.
17. A trimming machine having, in combination, a flexible knife, means to flex the knife thereby to form a curved portion thereof, means to reciprocate the curved portion of the knife lengthwise of its cutting edge, and a gage comprising a pair of faces which are disposed in angular relation to each other, said gage being constructed and arranged for engagement with an edge of a covered heel to guide the heel past said curved portion thereby to skive portions of a cover laid upon the heel. 7
18. A trimming machine having, in combination, a flexible knife, means, to flex the knife to form a loop portion thereof, means to secure one part of the loop portion against movement, mechanism to reciprocate another part of the loop portion lengthwise, means to brace a section of said portion, and a gage comprising a pair of faces disposed in angular relation with respect to each other and constructed and arranged for engagement with an edge of a heel to which a cover has been applied to guide the heel past said section thereby to skive portions of the cover which are located adjacent to said edge.
19. A trimming machine having, in combination, a flexible knife, means for flexing the knife to form a U-shaped portion thereof, a clamp to secure one of the ends of the U-shaped portion against movement, a member to reciprocate the other end of said U-shaped portion, members to brace a section of the U-shaped portion of the knife, a gage provided with angularly disposed faces for engaging an edge of a heel, and a rest arranged for engagement with one of the faces of the heel to cooperate with said gage for guiding the heel past said section thereby to skive the cover laid upon said heel.
20. A trimming machine having, in combination, a flexible knife, means to bend the knife to provide a flexed portion thereof, mechanism to move a section of the flexed portion lengthwise of its cutting edge, and a gage having angularly disposed supporting members for engaging an edge of a heel, one of said members being provided with a notch to receive the flexed portion of the knife.
21. A trimming machine having, in combination, a flexible knife, means for flexing the knife to form a curved portion thereof, mechanism to reciprocate said knife, a gage provided with a V- shaped portion arranged to engage an edge of a heel upon which a cover has been laid, the vertex of said V-shaped portion being spaced from the flexed portion of the knife, and the gage being constructed and arranged to guide the heel past said knife to trim the laid cover positioned adjacent to said edge by a skiving cut.
22. A trimming machine having, in combination, a flexible knife, means for flexing the knife, spaced members arranged to engage opposite sides of the knife to brace a flexed portion of the same, means for reciprocating said braced portion of the knife, and a gage having angularly disposed faces for engaging the rim of the attaching face of a heel upon which a cover has been laid, the braced portion of the knife being slightly spaced from the line of intersection of said faces and being constructed to skive a portion of the cover laid upon said attaching face by a skiving cut which starts adjacent to the rim of the heel as the heel is moved past the knife.
23. A trimming machine having, in combination, a flexible knife, means for flexing the knife, spaced members arranged to engage opposite sides of the knife to brace a flexed section thereof, means for reciprocating the braced portion of the knife, a gage having angularly dispose faces for engaging the rim of the attaching face of a heel upon which a covering has been laid, and a rest constructed and arranged to engage the breast face of the heel and to cooperate with the gage in guiding the heel past the braced portion of the knife thereby to skive the cover laid upon the attaching face by a out which starts adjacent to the rim of the attaching face of the heel and terminates in a feather edge.
24. A trimming machine having, in combination, a flexible knife, means for flexing the knife to form a U-shaped portion thereof, a clamp to secure one of'the ends of the U-shaped portion against movement, a member to recipro cate the other end of the U-shaped portion, members to brace a section of the Ushaped portion of the knife, a gage constructed and. arranged for engagement with an edge of a heel, a rest arranged to engage one of the faces of the heel and to cooperate with said gage thereby to guide the heel past said section for skiving the cover laid upon said heel, and means for adjusting said rest relatively to the gage in accordance with the shape of the heel the covering of which is to be skived.
25. A trimming machine having, in combination, a flexible knife, means for flexing the knife to form a U-shaped portion thereof, a clamp to secure one of the ends of the U-shaped portion against movement, a member to reciprocate the other end of-the U-shaped portion, members to brace a section of the U-shaped portion of the knife, a gage provided with angularly disposed faces for engaging an edge of a heel upon which a cover has been laid, a rest constructed and arranged for engagement with one of the faces of the heel and to cooperate with said gage for guiding the heel. past said section thereby to skive the cover'laid upon said heel, and means for adjusting said gage and saidrest relatively to the braced section of the knife and relatively to each other. e
26. A trimming machine having, in combination, a flexible knife, spaced members arranged to engage opposite sides of the knife for flexing the same therebyto provide a curved knife section, means for reciprocating said knife section, and a gage having angularly. disposed faces constructed and arranged to engage the rim of the attaching face of a heel to which a cover has been secured, the curved section of the knife being slightly spaced from the line of intersection of said faces and being constructed to skive a portion of the cover upon the attaching face boots and shoes having, in combination, an elonate portion of the gated flexible cutter, means for bending a section of the'cutter into a curve,means for oscillating the curved section lengthwise of the cutter, and
means for adjusting the cutter lengthwise of itself to replace asection which hasbecome dull by one which is sharp.
28. A trimming machine comprising two coilsupporting devices spaced apart and cooperatively related to support, respectively, two coiled portions of a flexible strip-knife having an intermediate coil-connecting portion, and knife-operating mechanism including movable clamping means arranged to clamp and operate said intermediate portion of the knife.
29. A trimming machine comprising two coilholders spaced apart and arranged to support,
respectively, two coiled portions of a flexible stripe knife having an intermediate coil-connecting portion, and knife-operating mechanism including clamping meansmovable relatively to said coilholders and arranged to' clamp said intermediknife.
