Description
R. D. MUXWORTHY ANTIRATTLE DEVICE Jan. 1, 1935.
- Filed Feb. 18, 1931? ill ' substantially rounded or thin outer edge, the op? TATES Patented Jan. 1, 1935 I 1 Canada I Application February 1 8 1923, Serial No. 657,440
while constructed to close the opening formed by thedoor frame, are constructed in such a manner that there is always considerable space between the base of the door frame and the base of the door. Usually the door latch is suificient to hold the door firmly in closed position during the early life of the car but rattling of the doors invariably develops after a short while. Various methods have been employed to avoid this rattling, such as the employment of buffer members on the side .of the door or door frame, these buffer members constituting any convenient device which might be ready to hand such as thin sheets of rubber,
' projecting rubber knobs and the like, which have been employed with indifferent success and readily wear in no time. In order to overcome the difficulty it is necessary to provide a device of extremely simple. construction, of wear resisting character and positioned in a manner to contact firmly withthe door and to the best advantage.
stances.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device which will permit suflicient resiliency to avoid inconvenience in closingthe door with the advantage of a firm bearing contact therewith.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device which may be very firmly mount ed with the use of a single securing member.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists essentially in a resilient pad of substantial wedge-shaped form, the thickness of which is gradually reduced towards one edge to provide a sloped upper surface terminating in a posite side of the pad being of greater thickness and terminating in a flat surface designed to abut a corresponding surface of the door frame, the upper surface of the pad, and at least one exposed edge, being covered with a flexible wear resisting material.
the accompanyingdrawing.
In the drawing, u 1. Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention. Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation showing the antirattle device mounted on the base offa under to completely cover the base, as indicated -2 Claims. (C1.1168 6), a a
door frame and illustrating one form of covering 7 for the device.
,Figure 3 is a similar View to Figure 2, illustrating an alternative form of covering.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view 5 partly in section, showing the device mounted on a door frame and the door in contact therewith in closed position. i
Referring more particularly to the drawing, A indicates the device as a whole comprising a pad 10 of resilient material, preferably rubber, which is reduced in thickness preferably from the middle towards the outer edge 11 to provide a structure of substantially wedge-shaped form, having a main bearingsurface 12 arranged in a horizontal plane between the middle of the pad and'its inner edgewhich terminates in a substantially flat surface 13 disposed in a vertical plane. The pad is covered with a flexible wear resisting material 14; such as thin metal, in such a manner thatfthe upper surface and the outer edge 11 at least are encased, it being preferable to encase both the outer and inneredges Hand 12 as well as the upper surface.
Theflat edge 13 is designed to abut the vertical plane surface 15 of the door frame, as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, and by mounting the pad in this way it may be secured by a single securing member, such as a screw 16, which projects through suitable orifices 17 and 18 in the cover and the pad respectively and by reason of the fact that, a firm bearing engagement between the side of the door frame and the fiat edge 13 of the pad exists, the securing member 16 once placed in position will hold the device firmly on its mounting without any danger of displacement. I The covering may be of such form, as illustrated in Figure 2, wherein the pad is recessed the base of the pad may be formed entirely flat throughout its area and thecovering bent thereat 23, the main intention being to provide a covering" for the upper surface and the front edge and to adopt the typeof covering that is most suitable to provide a durable, article, which has at least apart or the whole of its base encased and thus reinforced, while producing a combination rubber and metal article in the form ofa single unit. 1
By employing: such a construction it will be readily apparent when the door is swung to AT NT OFFICE? 1,986,744. ANII ATTLED VI'CE" 7 Itobcrt Dart Muxworthy, MedicineHat, lilberta closed position its base will first contact with the covering of the outer edge 11 and owing to the shape of the pad and its resiliency the door will be firmly wedged against rattling yet no difiiculty will be experienced in closing the door since the construction provides against jamming. The covering will at the same time provide for an easy sliding engagement while being resistant to wear. For mounting; purposes the covering andzpad are countersunk in;wel1-,known1 manner, such as shown in U. S. Patent No. 1,112,108, to accommodate the securing member. 7
It is obvious, therefore, that I have provided a device of extremely simple form whichmay be mounted firmly in position with; anminimmn oj efhfort and which will overcome the difficulties referred to.
I claim:- 1. An antirattle device for comprising a unitary member including a resilient" pad; of substantially" wedgershaped form provided with a flat base to engage with a mounting, said pad having its surface opposite to the base and at least one exposed edge covered with a single piece of thin flexible wear resisting material following the contour of the pad, said material forming a backing for at least a portion of the base of the pad.
2. An antirattle device for automobile doors comprising a unitary memberrincluding a resilient padlhavingaflatisurfacedbase; atflat edge and a smooth surface opposite the base, a portion of .the; latter surface being sloped from substantially the middle of the pad towards one edge to provide'a wedge-shaped portion, the said latter surfacevof: the pad,v the fiat edge and the edge opposite thereto and at least a portion of the lower surface being covered with thin flexible wear-resisting material following the contour of automobile. doors;
the padp and applied in a single piece.
