2 Claims.
rIhe present invention relates generally to new and useful improvements in paper hangers tools and has particular reference to a new and improved tool of this class for trimming wall paper prior to its being hung on the wall.
The tool also embodies a straight edge in conjunction with the rotary cutting disc thereof and means coacting with the straight edge to hold lthe tool in place upon the work and also means for raising and lowering the tool relative to the work to adjust the same to different thicknesses of paper.
The tool of the present invention is an improvement over that shown and described in my co-pending application Serial No. 615,571, June 6, 1932, for paper hangers trimmers.
The present application illustrates improved means for adjusting the cutting disc and embodies fall other features shown and described in said application and, it is, therefore desired that the ypresent application supersede said original application.
The principal object of the present invention 'is the provision of a paper hangers tool of simlple and positive character employing a rotating 'cutter which may be readily and easily adjusted 'to diierent thicknesses of wall paper.
A further object of the invention is the provi- 'sion of a paper hangers tool embodying a rotary v'cutter and a straight edge associated therewith 'in such manner as to guide and hold the tool in place upon the work.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a combined wall paper trimmer and l'straight edge of the class described that requires less skill to operate than the usual knife cutting tool and also embodies a greater degree of accuracy due to the straight edge and guide combined therewith.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a simple, convenient and compact combined cutting tool and straight edge that may be easily and accurately sharpened without the necessity of removing the revolvable cutter from 'the handle.
Additional to the foregoing objects is that of providing a combined tool of the class indicated that aords a greater degree of accuracy in trimming paper than the usual tool for the purpose.
Other objects and advantages of the invention Will become apparent with reference to the subjoined specification and the accompanying one sheet of drawings in which:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the trimmer per se, including the guide handle, cutting Wheel and adjustable guide member forming a part of the handle and adapted to adjust the cutting wheel relative to the paper to be cut;
Figure 2 is an end View of the device illustrating the bevelled guide member thereof and the shape of the tool in general;
Figure 3 is a rear elevation of the tool as seen looking from the reverse side and showing it mounted upon the straight edge;
Figure 4 is a transverse section taken through the handle, guide member, rotatable cutter and straight edge, as indicated by the lines 4-4 in Figures l and 3; and
Figure 5 is a perspective view illustrating the device held in the hand of the operator in position for honing, a crank member being shown inserted in place for turning the cutting disc against the hone.
Referring more particularly to the drawing in which the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated, the numeral 6 designates a handle of suitable shape and having mounted therein a rotatable dise 7, which disc is carried by a spindle 8 mounted in a suitable bushing 9, as clearly shown in Figure 4.
The cutting disc projects slightly below the handle 6 and said handle is provided with an adjustable guide member 10 which guide member lies ilat against the face of the handle and is provided on its under edge with a bevelled face 11 adapted to ride upon the bevelled upper face 12 o of the straight edge 13, as clearly disclosed in Figure 4.
The guide member is carried by an oscillatory element 14 which element is mounted to oscillate on the pivot 15 which pivot embodies a screw carried by the guide member 10. Said element ls slotted at one end as at 16 and a screw 17 carried by the guide 10 operates in this slot and a screw 18 carried by the handle 6 operates in a slot 19 formed in the guide 10, said element tending to cause the blade 7 to make a deeper cut when the guide 10 is moved upward with relation to the handle.
A guide screw 20 carried by the forward end of the handle and operating in a slot 21 carried in the guide limits the movement thereof and guides the outer end of the guide. A rubber spring member 22 is mounted in the slot 21 below the screw and tends to yieldingly hold the guide 10 and cutter 7 in a normal cutting position but when pressure is applied to the member 6 by the hand of the operator the guide 10, due to contact with the bevelled straight edge, tends to raise or lower the cutting disc 7 relative to the work.
In this manner the operator may make a deep cut or shallow cut by varying the pressure of his hand upon the guide 10 of the tool to adjust the cutting tool to varying thicknesses and grades of paper.
As shown in Figure 5 the tool cutter 7 may be readily sharpened by inserting a small crank 23 in the slot 24 of the spindle 8 of the tool and holding a hone 26 against the cutter as the cran is manipulated A corrugated rubber hand grip 25 is fixed to the forward upper edge of the tool and extends down the forward edge thereof to facilitate the handling of the device.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is the following:-
1. In a trimming tool of the class described, an operating handle, a rotatable cutting disc recessed into one face of said handle, a guide member adjustably mounted on and hinged by said handle against the face of said cutting Wheel, means cooperating with said handle and said guide for adjusting the depth of the cutter, and a straight edge associated With said guide member to guide the handle and cutting disc in a true line.
2. In a trimming tool of the class described, an operating handle, a cutting disc journalled in said handle and recessed into one side thereof, afguide member hingedly secured at one end to said handle and adapted, by the exertion or pressure upon said handle, to adjust the cutting depth of the cutting disc, means for resiliently holding said guide in normal cutting position, and an inwardly tapered straight edge co-operating with said guide to hold the tool in alignment.
