Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
O. COX, OF `LEXAYDRIA COUNTY, VIRGINIA.
METHOD .OF SECURING POCKET-BOOKS, &c,
Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,832, dated April 6, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER COX, of the county of Alexandria and State of Virginia, have invented a new Mode of Securing Pocket-Books, Portemonnaies, Purses, &c., and that the following is a full and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters referring to like parts, in which- Figure 1, is a view of the lock and plate, with the face plate off. Fig. 2 is a view of the same, with a contemplated change in the catch, and lever operating the same. Fig. 3, is a view of the face plate. Fig. 4, is a view of the button and screw separated. Fig. 5, is a view of the face plate showing how the lever or catch may be operated, by a knob on the end of the same, working through a slot in the face plate. Fig. 6, is a side view showing the invention attached to the pocket. Fig. 7, shows the pocket with the pocketbook in the pocket and attached to it with the button. Fig. 8, is a view of a proposed plan for lock.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceedv to describe its construction and operation.
In Fig. l A represents the plate or base of the lock, and may be made of any size- I desire. It may be made of only the size of the lock, and secured to the pocketbook, with screws from the inside of the pocketbook, screwing into the plate or sides of the locks, or it may have two projections, and by these screwed onto cross pieces made in the frame of the pocketbook. B the pocketbook. C, the catch lever working on screw f as its fulcrum, and by which it is attached to the base or plate. D the projecting lever resting on the end of catch lever C, guide g andk frame of the pocket book for operating the catch for unlocking the lock. a spring for keeping the catch lever in its place. b the sides or rim of the lock. b screw holes for fastening on the faceplate.
In Fig. 2 the same letters designate the like parts as in Fig. 1, showing the lever C working within the rim of the lock.
In Fig. 3, Gis the face plate, b the screw holes, e the slot.
In Fig. 4 0 the head of the button which catches into the lock 0l the plate on the same,
lever C by means of a slot in face plate and a knob on the end of the lever C.
' In Fig. 6 C thecatch lever, e the side of the pocket, G the face plate, H the screw, c the head of the screw, d the middle face plate for clasping the pocket.
In Fig. 7 H the screw, E the pocket, D the pocketbook.
In Fig. 8, is shown a different form of the lever C, operated by lever D simply passing through the rim of the lock.
In operating my invention the lock is attached to the pocketbook by having a face plate on the inside and through which screws pass through the pocketbook into the outer plate, or the screws may pass from the outer plate through the pocketbook into the inside plate. The button is unscrewed and a hole made through the pocket on its face side, through which the screw passes, and then the head c is screwed onto the screw, which when thus brought together it firmly clamps the pocket. The pocketbook is then inserted into the pocket and the head of the button enters into the enlarged end of the slot in the face of the lock, and slips up the slot Vuntil it passes the bolt catch, when it catches book, purse or portemonnaie, I press the.
lever D down on the rear end of the catch lever C which will throw back the catch from around the head of the button, when it will disengage and then by lifting up the pocketbook and pressing it off from the button and you can lift it out when the whole is disengaged. Thus I am enabled to securely attach or lock the pocketbook, portemonnaie or purse to the pocket so that it is impossible to take out the pocketbook without giving alarm.
I may iind it convenient to use any one of the plans I have represented for operating and constructing the lever C, as shown in the drawings, wvithout affecting the principle embraced in the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, portemonnaies, and purses to the pocket of what I Wish to secure by Letters Patent, isthe wearer as set forth and described.
The lock constructed as described and attached to the pocketbook, &c., in conibina- OLIVER COX' 5 tion With the button constructed as de- Witnesses: scribed, the Whole operating as set forth T. G. CLAYTON, 1
for the purpose of attaching pocketbooks, Jos. C. CLAYTON.
