advantages which is economical to produce, at-.
tractive in appearance when closed, and readily adjustedfor carrying, the handle or grip portion being quite strong. I
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved I container sealed or closed.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved container adjusted for carrying.
Fig. 3 is a vertical central section on a line corresponding to line 33 of Fig. 2 showing the relation of the parts in carrying.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section on line 4--4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the container is formed. 7
Referring to the drawings. my container is formed of an integral blank as shown in Fig. 5 and comprising a bottom l and side walls 2 disposed in alinement and joined by score lines 3 td-facilitate folding. Onev side wall has an inner side cover flap 4 and the other an outer side cover flap 5, these flaps being disposed in overlapping relation when the container is closed.
The bottom is provided with end flaps 6 while one side wall is provided with inner end flaps 7 andthe other with outer end flaps 8. The end flaps '7 have slits 9 arranged to be engaged by the locking tongues 10 on the end flaps 8, the end flaps being disposed with the bottom end flaps 6 on the inner side,-th e end flaps 7 folded against the same and the, end flaps 8 into overlapping relation to the end flaps 9, with their tongues and slits in interlocking engagement, thereby retaining the container in erected position. j The end flaps 8 have inner cover flaps 11 extending from the upper edges thereof and adapted to fold within the side cover flaps both when the container is sealed or closed and also when adjusted for carrying.
' The inner side cover flap 4 has a central slit 12 and transverse end slits 13, while the outer side cover flap 5 has a central tongue 14 enageable with the slit 12 and end tongues 15 engageable with the slits 13 for locking the flaps in closed position as shown in Fig. 1.
The side cover flap 4 has a hand opening. 16 therein and is longitudinally scored .at 17 in the plane of'the inner edge of this opening to facilitate bending to handle position. The
cover flap also has a longitudinal score line 18 in spaced relation to its edge providing a grip flap 19.
The outer side cover flap 5 has oppositely disposed angular slits 20- the alined portions of which are connected by the line of perforations 21 providing a break-outtongue or flap 22 form- J ing a hand opening 23v corresponding to the hand opening 16. The break-out portionor flap 22 is. scored along the line 24 to facilitate the bending of the flap or break-out 22, which may be swung or adjusted through the opening 16.
The cover flap 5 is'scored along the line 25 cor-' responding to the score line 17 to facilitate ad- Justment to handle position, and also along the line 26 corresponding to the line 18 to provide a When it is desired to adjust the, container for carrying, the tongues 14 and '15 are'disengaged from their coacting slitsand the coverflaps bent along the score lines 17 and 25 and 18 and 26;
These handle parts are then adjusted with one of the grip flaps, preferably the grip 14, on the inside and the other cover flap and the grip flap 19 folded over on the outside as'shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The tongue or grip flap 22 is disposed through the opening thereby providing a very effective handle, as is shown.
By arranging the grip flaps as 1 have illustrat-- ed I provide a grip or handle that isvery strong and one that is not likely to tear out when in use. The overlapping of the grip flaps very materially strengthens the handle portions, as does also the interlocking flap 22, that is, the load or strain is well distributed throughout the length of the flaps, and, further, a grip is provided which is comfortable to the hand.
.My improved container is well adapted for heavy products such as lard, for example, is economical to produce, strong and durable, and attractive in appearance, both when closed and adjusted for carrying. When closed a substantially smooth continuous surface is presented to grip flap, said inner cover flap also having a cen-.
tral longitudinal tongue slit and transverse tongue slits adjacent the ends thereof, the outer cover flap being slit and scored to facilitate partial breaking out of a portion thereof to provide a hand opening with a flap secured at one" edge thereof adapted to be disposed through the hand opening in the other cover nap when the cover flaps are adjusted as a handle, said outer cover fiap being also scored to facilitate bending to handle position and adjacent its edge to facilitate bending to provide a grip flap, said grip flaps being adapted to be folded into overlapping relation with the handle portion of the cover flaps when adjusted as a handle, said outer cover flap having end and central tongues engageable with said tongue slits of the inner cover flap, the bottom having end wall flaps on its ends and the side walls having overlapping end wall flaps on their ends provided with interlocking tongues and slits, the outer of said interlocking end flaps having inner cover flap extensions on their upper edges foldable within the said side cover flaps.
