This invention relates to a convertible seat and bed and has for its object to provide a device of simple and practical construction which may be utilized as a convertible davenport-type l 5 seat or as a couch or bed as desired.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned in which the seat section and back-rest are so mounted upon the frame structure and associated with 1 each other that when the seat section is moved to a horizontal position to be utilized as a couch that the back-rest will automatically move to a horizontal position and align edge to edge with the seat section with only a minimum amount of effort being required on the part of the person operating the devices The invention consists in a convertible seat and bed as set forth in the following specification and particularly as pointed out in the claims thereof.

Referring to the drawings:- Fig. 1 represents a plan view of the device with the various parts thereof positioned to be utilized as a seat and with the mattresses or cushions for the back-rest and seat section in position thereon.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device with the back-rest and seat section thereof positioned to constitute a seat.

Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 3-3- of Fig. 1 with the back-rest and seat section thereof positioned to constitute a bed.

Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.

In the drawings, 5 represents a fixed frame embodying therein end members 6, a front crossbar 7 and a rear cross-bar 8. The various portions of the frame may be constructed of any of they well-known forms of metal structural members well known to those skilled in the art and may be bolted, riveted or welded one to another as desired.

The back-rest 9 is pivotally secured at 10 to the end frame members 6 to rock therebetween from the position illustrated in Fig. 2 to that illustrated in Fig. 3. The back-rest 9 is constructed from any suitable type of metal structural members desired and has a plate 11 rigidly fastened thereto at each end thereof at an intermediate position thereon and adjacent to the pivot 10. Pins 12 and 13 adapted to function both as stop and actuating members project from each end of the back-rest 9 for purposes hereinafter to be described.

A seat section- 14 constructed of suitable metal structural members is pivotallysecured at its opposite ends to the end frame members 6 by means of links 15, one end of each link 15 being pivotally connected at 16 to the seat section 14 and at its other end at 17 to a plate 18 fastened to the end frame member. When the device is used as a seat, the seat section 14 rests loosely at the front thereof upon the front cross bar '7, see Fig. 2. At its rear, the seat section 14 is suspended at its opposite ends from the plate 11 of the back-rest 9 by means of links 19, said links being pivotally attached at their upper ends at 20 to the plate 11 and at their lower ends at 21 to the seat section 14.

When the back-rest 9 and seat section 14 are both located in their horizontal position, at 70 which time they are also positioned edge to edge, they are locked one to another by a mechanism as follows:--A lever 22 is pivotally attached at 23 to the under side of the seat section 14. Connecting rods 24 operatively connect the lever 22 75 with latches 25 which are pivotally attached at 26 to the under side of the seat section. The latches 25 are slotted at 27 and when rocked by the lever 22 these slots are adapted to interlock with pins 28 provided upon the under side of the back-rest 9, in a manner to securely lock the back-rest and seat section one to another in a position to be utilized as a couch or bed. Cushions or mattresses 29 and 30 of any desired construction may be provided for the seat section 14 and back-rest 9 respectively as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. It is furthermore evident that springs of any suitable form may be attached to the seat section 14 and back-rest 9 or detachably mounted thereon in a well-known manner for the purpose of yieldingly supporting the cushions, but said springs are not illus trated in the drawings as they form no part of the invention. A handle member 31 is provided for the seat section 14 being secured to the under side thereof at the front thereof.

The general operation of the device hereinbefore specifically described is as follows:-Whe n the device is to be used as a seat the back-rest 9 is preferably inclined as illustrated in Fig. 2, at which time a rear edge thereof contacts with an edge of the rear cross-bar 8. At this time the seat section 14 at the front thereof is supported upon the front cross-bar 'l and the rear portion of the seat section is suspended by means of the links 19 from the plate 11 of the backrest. In this position the rear edge of the links 19 engage the stop members 12 and the backrest 9 is, therefore, prevented from tipping forwardly at its lower edge.

When it is desired to position the back-rest 9 and seat' section 14 in order that the device may be utilized as a, couch or bed, the handle 31 of the seat section is grasped and the seat section lifted in a manner to cause the links 15 to rock upon their pivots 17. During this movement the seat section 14 will swing upwardly and forwardly and the front edgeof the links 19 will engage the stop members 13 thereafter causing the back-rest 9 to swing upon its pivots 10 until it eventually reaches a horizontal position, at which time the seat section 14 will be located in a horizontal position and also be aligned edge to edge therewith as illustrated in Fig. 3. The locking means for the back-rest and seat section is then actuated by rocking the lever 22 and causing the latches 25 to engage the pins 28, at which time the back-rest 9 and seat section 14 will be securely locked one to another. When the back-rest 9 and seat section 14 are located in their horizontal position, the lower edge of the back-rest rests upon the upper surface of the rear cross-bar 8 and a greater portion of the weight which is applied to the back-rest falls upon this cross-bar while the seat section 14 is supported by the links 15 and plates 18.

In operating the device to both seat or bed positions, it is not necessary to grasp the backrest as this member is in each case actuated automatically by the engagement of the links 19 with the stop pins 12 and 13.

I claim:

1. In a convertible seat and bed the combination of a frame, a back-rest pivotally mounted thereon, a seat section pivotally mounted upon said frame and also suspended at the rear thereof from points intermediate the upper and lower edges of said back-rest and approximately centrally with respect to the front and rear faces thereof, the back-rest being adapted to tip to a horizontal position and align edge to edge with the seat section when the latter is rocked to a horizontal position, and means to lock the backrest and seat section in their horizontal position.

2. In a convertible seat and bed the combination of a frame, a back-rest pivotally mounted thereon, a. seat section supported at the front thereof upon said frame and at the rear thereof suspended to swing from said back-rest at points intermediate the upper and lower edges thereof, and approximately centrally with respect to the front and rear faces thereof, links pivotally connecting an intermediate portion of the seat sectipn to the frame, the back-rest being adapted to tip automatically to a horizontal position and align edge to edge with the seat section when the latter is rocked to a horizontal position, and means to lock the back-rest and seat section in their horizontal position.

3. In a convertible seat and bed the combination of a frame, a back rest pivotally mounted thereon, a seat section resting loosely at the front thereof upon said frame, links pivotally suspending the seat section at the rear thereof from points at the end of the back-rest and intermediate the upper and lower edges thereof and front and rear faces thereof, whereby in seat form said section will. swing beneath the lower edge of said back-rest, links also pivotally connecting an intermediate portion of the seat section to the frame, the back-rest being adapted to tip automatically to a horizonal position and align edge to edge with the seat section when the latter is rocked to a horizontal position, and means to lock the back-rest and seat; section in their horizontal position."

In a convertible seat and bed the combination of a frame embodying therein end members and front and rear cross-bars extending there'- between, a back-rest pivotally attached to said end members and adapted to rest in its raised position against an edge of said rear cross-bar, and in its horizontal position upon the upper surface of the rear cross-bar, a seat supported at the front thereof upon said front cross-bar and at the rear thereof suspended from said back-rest, links pivotally connecting an intermediate portion of the seat section to the end frame members, the back-rest being adapted to tip automatically to a horizontal position and align edge to edge with the seat-section when the latter is rocked to a horizontal position, and means to lock the back-rest and seat section in their horizontal position. 6.
