BY 7&4 ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 20, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE This invention relates to decorative articles. It is particularly directed to decorative illuminating devices for Christmas and other festive decoration.

An object of this invention is to provide a neat, compact and attractive illuminated ornament of the character described, adapted for use with an electric lamp, which shall be simple in construction, comparatively cheap to manufacture, easy to assemble, attractive in appearance, and

withal practical and efficient to a high degree.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible embodiments of this invention.

Fig. 1 is a side, elevational view of a decorative unit embodying the invention, with parts in cross-section;

Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and

Fig. 3 is a view of a Christmas tree lighting outfit with my improved device attached to one of the lamps, said device being shown in edge elevational View.

Referring now in detail to the drawing, 10 designates an illuminating decorative device embodying the invention, here shown for the purpose of illustration only, in the form of a generally star-shaped member 11. The member 11 may be made of sheet metal, as a stamping, or any other suitable material, and is preferably flat. Said member 11, as shown in the drawing, is formed with a star-shaped outer edge 12 and a star-shaped inner edge 13, the middle of said member 11 being cut out or open. The inner sides of the two bottom points 14 and 15 of the star-shaped member 11, however, terminate in edges 14a and 15a, the apex between the points 14 and 15 being omitted for the purpose hereinafter stated.

At the lower ends of the edges 14a and 15a there are formed tabs 16 and 17 preferably bent iinto a plane at right angles to the plane of the member 11. Mounted on the bent portions of said tabs 16 and 17 is an annular ring 18 made of rubber, fiber, mica, or any other suitable insulating material. The ring 18 maybe attached to said tabs by means of screws 19, eyelets,

rivets or in any other suitable manner. The central opening 20 of the ring 18 is preferably of sufficient diameter for receiving the base of an electric lamp 23. g The lamp 23 may be mounted on the ring 20 in such manner that the bulb 24 projects within the star-shaped opening or cut out of the member 11 and between the edges'l la. and 15a. Screwed to the base 22 is an ordinary lamp socket 25.

It will now be noted that the upper edge of the socket 25 presses against the underside of the ring 18, whereas the lamp bulb contacts the upper side of the ring, the lamp thus being firm- 1y mounted and assembled on the ring. It will be understood that the plane of the star-shaped 4" 12 and 13 thereof to enhance the appearance thereof. The device 10 may be attached to a Christmas tree or used in any other suitable manner and forms a highly attractive illuminated ornament. Although the member 11 is shown as star-shaped, it will be understood that any other ornamental shape may be employed. It will now be understood that when the lamp is illuminated, the bulb 24 may be seen from both sides of the device 10. Furthermore, the opposite surfaces of the member 11 will be illuminated by a single lamp, thus producing a highly attractive, practical and eflicient decorative article.

In Fig. 3 there is shown a Christmas tree lighting outfit wherein a plurality of sockets 25 are attached together by wiring 2'7 and 28 in series circuit, a socket member 29 beinginterposed in parallel in said circuit and the wiring being connected to an attachment plug 26. Only one of the sockets 25 of the lighting outfit are shown as provided with a device 10, it being understood however, that in practice, all of the sockets may be attached to the ornamental device 10 in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1, and strung over a Christmas tree for example, to produce highly attractive, decorative effects.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing, is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:-

1. An ornamental device comprising a member having a central cut out portion, an insulatingring fixed on said member and disposed in a plane perpendicular to the plane of said member, a lamp having a screw base extending through the opening in said ring and a socket having a screw shell, screwed to said base, the bulb of said lamp being disposed within said out out portion and said out out portion being substantially larger'than the bulb of, said lamp, to permit unscrewing of said lamp from said base and. removal of said lamp from said ring.

2. An ornamental device comprising a fiat member having a central cut out portion and end portions adjacent one another, said end portions being bent to a plane perpendicular to the plane of said member, a ring fixed. to said bent portions and disposed in a plane perpendicular to the plane of said member, a lamp having the base thereof projecting through the opening in said ring and a socket attached tosaid base, the bulb of said lamp being disposed within said out out portion, and said out out portion being larger than said bulb to permit longitudinal .movement of said lamp Within said cut out portion during mounting, of said lamp on said ring and removal of said-lamp from said ring.
