Our invention relates to a new and useful Christmas tree ornament and the method of making the same and it relates more particularly to an ornamental bell which is very attractive and inexpensive to manufacture.

Our invention further relates to an ornament of this character which when suspended on a Christmas tree, or the like, and subjected to light will produce a lustrous effect and will reflect and refract the light both internally and externally in various directions greatly to enhance its ornamental offect.

To the above ends, our invention consists of a bell having a body or core struck up or formed of any desired base, flexible, form-retaining material, a relatively smooth inner lining of tin foil or other material having a metallic sheen or luster, and a relatively roughened outer covering of the same or other foil or material having the desired sheen or luster, with or without any desired color variations.

Referring to the drawing, the bell is constructed from an originally flat sheet of straw-board or other flexible, formable, form-retaining sheet material which is formed or pressed into the desired shape by means of suitable male and female dies, the forming of the flat sheet into the bell shape resulting in slight overlaps or cleats, clearly shown in Fig. 1. A suitable handle 2 is secured to the upper portion of the bell for suspension from a twig of a Christmas tree or other support. With the core 3 of the bell formed as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a sheet of any desired tin foil 4 is applied to the inside of the bell 3 completely to cover the internal surface thereof, said tin foil when pressed against the inside of the bell being relatively smooth except for showing the creases 5 resulting from the cleating or overlapping of the material during formation of the bell, as best shown in Figs. 3 and 4. To the outer surface of the bell 3 is applied another sheet of tin foil 6 which is deliberately roughened as at '7 to produce high and low spots and projections of irregular shapes, so that the light shed on the bell from the light bulb on the tree will be reflected and refracted from the roughened surface in all directions, thus producing a very vivid effect and resulting in a beautiful display of the broken light. The internal surface of the bell reflects the light also with a certain amount of irregularity and refraction but not to the same extent as the refraction produced by the highly roughened external surface 7 of the bell. The inner and outer tin foil sheets 5 and 6 are pref- 5 erably pressed on to the inner and outer surfaces of the bell core 3 either by hand or by any suitable machinery, it being also understood that sheet material from which the core bell 3 is made could be covered on both of its surfaces with the desired tin foil, and then theentire assembly can be formed into the shape of a bell by a single operation by means of a suitably formed male and female die. The lustrous sheets 5 and 6 may be made of metal foil or any other sheet material sufiiciently thin and flexible and having the desired sheen or luster and may be plain or may have a variegated eifect.

We claim:

1. An ornamental bell for Christmas trees, and the like, comprising a core struck up from a flexible, non-metallic form-retaining flat sheet material, a smooth facing of lustrous thin sheet material for the inner surface of said bell, and a facing of thin, flexible, lustrous sheet material covering the outer surface of said bell and being of an irregularly roughened surface to reflect and refract the light shed thereon.

2. The method of making an ornamental bell for a Christmas tree, or the like, which consists in striking up a flexible, form-retaining sheet material into the form of a bell, covering the inner surface of said bell with a lustrous relatively smooth thin sheet material, and covering the outer surface of said bell with a lustrous irregularly roughened sheet material.
