Application August '11, 1932, Serial no. mm
The pump of my invention is a. regenerative pump in which the runner bucket impinges againstthe free fluid in the channel of the pump and carries the fluid therein with iii a plurality of such buckets engaging the fluid in the channel.
My pump does not depend upon centrifugal effect upon the water, it does not utilize centrifugal force as' its prime motive power, and it does not depend upon the velocity of the water I as built up by the impeller and upon means for changing this velocity into pressure.
It is my object to eliminate the movement of the fluid between impeller vanes.
It is the object of my invention to place my vanes on the peripheral side of the impeller and pocket them sonthat any centrifugal force will actually work against the impeller.
It is my object to provide an impeller in which the vanes are inclined in the direction of movement of the flu'id so that centrifugal movement of the fluid upwardly will be against the overhanging sides of the vanes, thereby materially increasing the head of the pump. g
It is my object to so form the rear side of the runner vanes in a true relief curve-that I decrease the torque without losing an increase in working efiiciency of the pump.
It is my object to provide a pump which is capable of pumping against higher pressure for a given peripheral speed than is possible with centrifugal impeller pumps.
It is 'my object to provide .a circumferential taper of approximately 15 degrees to hold arunning clearance in this type of pump;
It is my object to provide a runner vane inwhich the depth of the vane should be equal to the depth of the channel carrying the stream of fluid and the, vane shall face the fluid in'the direction of rotation atflan angle of about 45 degrees to the tangent of its point of contactwith the periphery.
It is desirable that the space between the vanes shall be 1 /2 times their depth along. the vane, face and that the rear side of the vane shall shoulder 25a. The teeth in this connection of plate partially Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 Figure 3 is a top plan view of the impeller; Figure 4 is a similar view to Figure 1- with a modified form of impeller vane;
Figure 5 is a section on the line 55 of Figure 4; Figure 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Figure 4; Figure 7 is a top plan view of a portion of the modified form of impeller vanes.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 indicates a conventional base fora pump casing, which has an inlet passageway 2 communicating with a rotor chamber port 3. This chamber has an out- 'let port 4 communicating with a discharge passageway 5. A rotor chamber 6 is formed by one side of the casing 7 and a-detachable cover plate 8 held in position by the bolts 9. The wall 7 is provided with a bearing sleeve 10 having a bearing 11 for supporting the rotor shaft 12. Between a the rotor 13 and the interior of the bearing 11 is a packing gland 14 held in position by the spring 15. The other end of the shaft 12 has threaded thereon a bearing member 15a which rides against a. ball 16 that in turn rests upon the screw mem-.
her 17 carried in the sleeve 18 and the detachable vided with a tapered flange 21 having a tapered surface 22 in which is cut a fluid channel 23. Cooperating with this taper is a tapered surface 24 of the impeller in which is a peripheral channel 25 divided transversely by a plurality of overhanging teeth 26 preferably formed and arranged as heretofore described.
Turning to the form shown in Figures 4, 5, 6 and '7, it will be noted that the impeller, instead of having a water channel between oppositely-disposed shoulders 25a and 25b, has only the single the impeller formthe vanes.
