Description

s. SAPIO Filed Aug. 10
SIGNALING AND ADVERTISING DEVICE Aug. 28, 1934.
Patented Aug. 28, 1934 SIGNALING AND ADVERTISING DEVICE;
Gaetan Sapio, Vichy, France, assignor to Societe t Satralux, 1 France 1 Application August 10,1932, seriarNo.
In France August 12, 1931 Vichy, France, a company of '3 Claims. orig-445) The present invention has for its object a signaling device for making clearly visible, during the night as well as during the day, the plates on which are Written the names of the streets and the advertisements that accompany these indications.
The apparatus according to the present invention essentially comprises a support or post at the upper end of which are provided one or several lo plates carrying indications on the one hand of the name of a street and on the other hand of advertisements. These sign plates are made of glass, preferably ground or colored, on which are written the desired indications. Each of said glass plates forms a face of a metallic box-shaped casing which is illuminated from the inside. The plates are pivoted about a sleeve so as to allow of placing them in the desired angular position with respect to each other.
A preferred embodiment of my invention will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawing, given merely by way of example, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a front view of the signaling and advertising device according to my invention;
Fig. 2 is a detail view at an enlarged scale of the frame or casing shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a corresponding plan view corresponding to Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a corresponding bottom View;
As shown in Fig. 1, the apparatus according to my invention, which is intended to be placed at the crossing of two streets, consists of a hollow post 1 the lower portion of which is sealed in the ground. Said post, which is preferably of polygonal cross section, is provided at its upper part with a cylindrical portion 1a of a diameter smaller than the thickness of the lower portion of the post.
40 According to the embodiment shown in Figs. 1-4 knuckles 3a and 3b, integral with frames 2a and 2b which support the sign plates are engaged on the upper end 1a of post 1.
Owing to that arrangement, it is possible to fix in any suitable manner, for instance by means of screws '40 extending throughout the walls of said knuckles and applied against part 1a of post 1, said sign boards in such manner that they make with each other an angle equal to the angle of the two roads or streets that meet at said crossing.
It is advantageous to provide on each knuckle vertical faces forming a bevelled edge as shown at 30 in Fig. 3, the corresponding knuckle of the other frame being adapted to rest, in any of the positions shown in dotted lines, against one of i said vertical faces.
Owing to that arrangement, it is possible to fix one of the two frames in any angular position with respect to the other comprised within the angle shown in the drawing. In particular it will be seen that inany of the two positions shown in dotted lines the angle between the two sign plates is minimum.
Frames 2a and 2b are made of metal, for instance of case aluminium, and are provided with small projections against which the glass plates rest, said glass plates being fixed on the outside by small pieces 31 screwed or fixed in any suitable way on the edge of the frame.
A door 32 is provided in the under face of the frame as shown in Fig. 4, the intermediate cross members such as 33 being hollowed out as shown in Fig. 3. Each frame is illuminated from the inside, for instance by means of a lamp 18, placed inside the frame, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Finally, a signaling lamp is provided at 34 at the upper end of post 1 between movable boards 2a and 2b. Said boards are preferably made as shown in Fig. 1, that is to say they comprise places B, C, D which can be utilized in-the following manner: Panels B may carry indications concerning the road, or an inscription for tourists or automobilists (such as Danger, or School, etc.). Panels C are used for advertising, and panels D are used for signaling.
While I have disclosed in the foregoing description what I deem tobe a practical and efficient embodiment, it should be well understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be changes made in the arrangement, disposition and form of the parts without departing from the principles of my invention as comprehended within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A signaling and advertising device of the type described which comprises in combination, a post, two frames, at least one knuckle integral with each of said frames adapted to engage on the upper end of said post, so that said frames are rotatably supported by said post, the vertical outer surfaces of each of said knuckles being of rounded shape, a projection on one horizontal face of each of said knuckles having two vertical surfaces making an angle with each other, the ridge of said two vertical surfaces of each vertical rounded face of the other knuckle and close to it, and means for fixing said knuckles to said post in the desired position with respect to it.
2. A signaling and advertising device which comprises in combination, a post, two frames, at least one knuckle integral with each of said frames adapted to engage on the upper end of said post so that said frames are rotatably supported by said post, the vertical outer surfaces- 3. A signaling and advertising device, comprising in combination a post, two frames, two knuckles in line with each other integral with each of said frames at the same distance from each other for both of said frames, said knuckles being adapted to engage on the upper end of said post, so that said frames are rotatably supported by said post, the vertical outer surface of each of said knuckles being of rounded shape,
a projection on the horizontal upper face of one of said knuckles, a projection on the horizontal under face of the corresponding knuckles of the other frame, said projections each having two vertical surfaces making an angle with each other, the ridge of said two vertical surfaces of each knuckle being parallel to the cylindrical outer surface of the corresponding knuckle of the other frame'and close to it, and means for fix- -ing said knuckles to said posts in the desired position.
