Description

8- 1934- A. E. BINDER 1,970,073
AUTOMOBILE SMOKING SET Filed Aug. 22, 1931 Patented Aug. 14, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to automobile smoking sets and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive ash tray which will always be within convenient reach of the driver and will be neat and attractive in appearance as well as strong and durable and devoid of rattling parts.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification,
Figure l is a perspective view of an automobile l0 smoking set embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View, showing the means for removably attaching the ash tray,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 33 of Figure 1, with the ash tray supporting ring in section and the tray in elevation.
Referring now to the drawing, in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, 10 designates a body which is preferably a substantially rectangular receptacle adapted to carry cigarettes and matches. Projecting from the receptacle is a lateral arm 20, one end of which extends along the bottom of the receptacle and is removably secured thereto, preferably by means of a screw 21, as best shown in Figure 2. The lateral arm 20 is terminally equipped with a ring 22 in which is removably supported an ash tray 23 having a rim 24 at the top bearing upon the top edge of the ring 22.
A hinged cover 25 closes the ash tray, there being a pair of hinge lugs 26 on the rim 24 receiving between them an integral hinge lug 27 carried by the cover, a pintle 28 is passed through the three lugs to hingedly mount the cover. It will be observed that the hinge of the cover is diametrically opposite the arm 20. For positioning the tray at all times, a depression 29 is formed in the ring 22 to receive the hinge lugs 25 and 26, as best shown in Figure 1. A set screw 46 is threaded through the ash tray supporting ring 22 and bears against the ash tray below the rim 24 thereof to removably secure the ash tray in place.
As the device is to be used in an automobile,
there has been provided means for supporting the same from the steering post in such position that the ash tray can be easily reached by the driver of the car. This means consists of an arm or bracket 42 having one end secured to the body or receptacle 10 and at its other end being provided with a clamp 40 adapted to be engaged about the steering post and, when tightened, firmly grip the post. If the receptacle is to be attached to the instrument board or a wall of the car the bracket will be omitted and the receptacle con-- nected with its support in any desired manner.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
A device of the class described including a supporting arm having a ring at one end, said ring being formed with a depression at the side remote from the arm, an ash tray fitted in the ring and having a rim resting on the upper edge of said ring, a cover adapted for closing the ash tray and being hinged to the rim, the hinge connection between the tray and the cover seating in the depression in the ring, and means for removably securing said tray within the ring.
