Description

July 31, 1934. B; GOLDMAN WRAPPER FOR PIECE GOODS Filed Dec. 28. 1932 Patented July 31, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to packaging and has special reference to means for packaging piece goods.
One important object of the invention is to provide a novel form of wrapper for enclosing bolts, rolls and the like of piece goods such as cotton, linen, woolen, silk and other fabrics known as piece goods.
A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved form of wrapper for such piece goods, the wrapper having transparent ends through which the fabric may be seen and sample thereof be exposed.
A third important object of the invention is to provide a form of such wrapper wherein the ends may be transparent but the body of the wrapper may be oqaque so that delicate colors apt to be injured by light will not be affected.
A fourth important object of the invention is to provide an improved form of end section for such a wrapper.
A fifth important object of the invention is to provide an end piece for this purpose having a reinforced central opening so that the wrapper may be used with a roll or bolt having a core on which the fabric is wound.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a form of the wrapper as applied to a roll of cloth, the wrapper being partly removed.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing a form of the wrapper suitable for a fiat bolt of fabric.
Figure 3 is a similar view of one end of a doubled bolt showing the wrapper as applied to such a bolt.
Figure 4 is a view of the end piece of the wrapper before folding for application.
Figure 5 is a section of the end piece folded as it appears when applied.
Figure 6 is an enlarged detail section on the line 6-6 of Figure 4.
In each form of the invention the wrapper consists of a pair of like end pieces and an intermediate or body piece. Each of these end pieces is of transparent material, preferably cellophane or the like, and has a central portion 10 of a size and shape to cover the end of the package, being circular as in Fig. 1 to fit a roll A, elongated as in Fig. 2 for a flat bolt B or substantially triangular with rounded angles for such a bolt C as is shown in Fig. 3. Around this central portion is a mar ginal portion 11 provided with spaced creases 12 extending from the central portion 10 to the edge of the marginal portion. These creases 12 are preferably perpendicular to the edge of the central portion 10 at their points of contact therewith. By reason of these creases the marginal portion may be bent to lie at right angles to the center at the edge thereof to form a pleated flange. When the end piece is applied to the roll or bolt this flange covers an end portion of the bolt side.
The center piece 13 of the wrapper laps over these flanges at its side edges and preferably extends from end to end of the roll or bolt although it may be spaced from one end, as at the left of Fig. 1 to expose a portion of the fabric through part of the transparent flange if desired so that the color or pattern of the fabric may be seen. This center piece is preferably of opaque material.
Where the device is to be used with a roller D or board E projecting from the ends of the roll or bolt each end piece is provided with a central opening 14 of proper size to receive and fit on the roller or board and the edge of this opening is reinforced by rings 15 glued or otherwise firmly secured to the center part 10 as shown. By this means tearing of the end piece at this opening is prevented.
In order that the pattern and color of the fabric may be seen a sample piece S may be arranged beneath the transparent center 10 at one end of the package as shown in Fig. 1.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention Without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
A protective wrapper for bolts of fabric affected by light, comprising an opaque part adapted to enclose the sides of the fabric bolt, a separate part of a transparent material adapted to enclose each end of the fabric bolt, each separate transparent part having a marginal portion adapted to be engaged beneath the adjacent edge of the opaque part, said opaque part having an edge thereof spaced inwardly of an end of the fabric bolt to expose a minor portion of the face of the fabric through the exposed marginal portion of the adjacent of the separate transparent parts.
