Description

W. P. HUD-SON Sash- Fastener. I No. 196,803. Patented Nov. 6,1877
UNITED STATES PATENT *QFFIOE.
WILLIAM P. 'HUDSON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT l N SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,803, dated November 6, 1877 application filed April 4, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. HUnsoN, of Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Double Sash-Lock, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a plan view with the top of case removed, showing the working parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish a device by which to lock both the upper and lower sash of the window at the same time, or not, as may be desired, and in any desired position, up or down.
My invention consists of two bolts playing at right angles to each other, oneoperated by an angle-lever, and the other by a straight lever, and both levers working on one pivot, as hereinafter more fully described and definitely claimed.
In the drawings, A is the case, in which are contained the working parts. This case is made in two parts or halves, the lower one having recesses for the bolts with their acoompanyin g springs, and for the levers to play in. B is a barrel-bolt, lying in a recess along the front side of the case, and is provided with a spring, G, for throwing it outward. D is an angled lever, pivoted at the angle at 61, having a handle projecting out at the end of the case, and also a knob, by which it is operated. The short end of the lever takes into a notch in the side of the bolt B, and is employed to push the bolt inwardly. E is a barrel-bolt, similar to B, which plays in a transverse recess in the case. It is also provided with a spring for throwing it outward. F is a straight lever, lying above the lever D. It is pivoted at d, and has a handle and knob, which reaches out through a slot in the end of the case A.
The short end of said lever operates the bolt E in like manner to D. In the middle bar G, across the end of the case A, are made notches or shoulders g g, for retaining the levers and holding the bolts back when desired. 1
This device is applied to the upper righthand corner of the lower sash. The bolt B is for holding or looking the lower sash, holes being made in the window-frame to receive the bolt, while transverse bolt E is for looking or holding the upper sash, a series of holes being made in the front side of said sash for that purpose.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when the window is closed both the upper and lower sash may be securely locked, and if it be de- When the window is shut and locked the levers or bolts cannot be tampered with from the outside with a thin strip of iron or knife thrust up between the two sash. It is, therefore, to'a certain extent, burglar-proof.
Having described my invention, I claim- The case A, bolt B, with its spring 0, the angled lever D, the transverse bolt E, with its spring, and the straight lever F, both levers working on pivot d, when constructed, combined, and arranged to operate substantially as described and shown, for the purpose set forth.
w. 'P. HUDSON.
