(cl. 45-75) This invention relates to improvements in ash tray and glass holders and particularly to'that type which may be detachably supported by the edge of a table or the like, and one of the objects of the same is to provide an improved deviceof this character which is provided with clamping or securing means whereby the device may be readily secured in position and as readily removed, without injuring or marring the surface of the table, and which when in position, will be out of the way of the players, shouldthe device be attached to a game table.

A further object is to provide an improved device of this character which will not extend 5 for any appreciable extent over the table top, 'and which may be secured at any point along the table edge.

A further object is to provide a device of this character embodying a glass holder and an ash tray supporting ring which latter may be swung into position to cover or register with the glass holder when the glass holder is. not to be used, and also out of register or alinement with the glass holder so that both the glass holder and 5 the ash tray may be simultaneously used.

To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of a 5 table having an attachment constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention applied thereto.

Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 10 designates generally a basket like receptacle of any desired size and configuration and constructed of any suitable material. Projecting laterally from the receptacle adjacent the top thereof are extensions 11 which are laterally spaced from each other, and the ends of these extensions are bent upwardly as at 12 to form shoulders, while the extremities 13 of the upwardly bent portions are bent later- 5 ally so that when the shoulders 12 contact with the outer face of the portion 14 of the table the extremities 13 will'project for a short distance over the upper surface of the edge of the table.

, A member 15 is adapted to slide in a loop or guide 16 supported by the bottom of the recepta- 00' cle, and one extremity of the member is deflected downwardly as at 17 to form a fingerengaging portion. A stop 18 is also provided on the member to limit its movement in one direction.

The member 15 is preferably in the form of a bar constructed of flat material and comparatively narrow, the forward end thereof being bent upwardly as at 19 to provide an inclined portion, for a purpose to be set forth. The upper extremity of the inclined portion 19 is preferably deflected as at 20 to form a foot adapted to rest against the lower surface of the top 21 of the table, and if desired an offsetportion 22 may be provided intermediate the ends of the upwardly inclined portion 19 so as to position the extremity 20 against the lower face of the table at a substantial distance from the edge of the table. The member 15 slides through an opening 22 in a catch or locking device 23. This lock 23 is pivotaliy mounted upon the receptacle 10 in any suitable manner, such as by deflecting the extremity 24 thereof to pass through an opening 25 in a portion of the receptacle or support, and a spring 26 is anchored as at 27 to the receptacle and engages the member 23, tending normally to move the lock' 23 in the position shown in full lines in Figure 3. The lock 23 is arranged in alinement with the depending portion 17 of the member 15 so that by grasping the depending portion 17 of the member 15 and the lower end of the lock 23 between the thumb and first finger of the hand, the lock 23 may be deflected to the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 3, so as to first release the member 15 and then by a continued pressure of the thumb against the depending portion 1'! of the member 15, this member will be moved through the lock 23 so as to move the inclined or cam shaped portion 19 out of contact with the edge of the portion 14 of the table and thereby move the member to an unclamping position with respect to the portions 13 which engage over the top of the table. The lock 23 and depending portion'l'l then serve as a handle by means of which the attachment may be removed from the table.

Similarly, these portions will also form a handle by means of which the attachment may be placed upon the table. After the attachment has been replaced so that the portions 13 engage and rest upon the top edge of the table with the shoulder 12 abutting the outer face of the table, the operator may then place the thumb against the outer surface of the receptacle in line with the depending portion 17 of the member 15 and grasp such depending portion by the forefinger. By then drawing the member 15 backwardly and at the same time forcing the shoulders 12 against the edge of the table, the inclined or cam portion 19 of the member 15 will engage the edge of the portion 14 of the table, and this inclined portion co-operating with the portions 13 of the support operates in the nature of a cam to draw the portions 13 and the shoulders 12 firmly against the edge .of the table.

With this construction it will be noted that there is a three point contact between the attachment and the table, to-wit: the portions 13 and the inclined surface 19 of the member 15, the latter engaging the edge of the table intermediate the points 13. With this construction it will be manifest that the device will be rigidly secured to the table. As the member 15 is drawn backwardly by the depending portion 17 it will slide through the lock 23, but as soon as the member 15 is released the lock 23 will assume a position to lock the member in its adjusted position.

Obviously, this attachment may be placed at any point around the edge of the table, intermediate the legs of the table.

An ash tray supporting ring 28 is pivotally mounted as at 29 to the support or receptacle 10, preferably at the top thereof to swing about an upright pivot, and this ring is of a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the top of the receptacle 10.

The ring may be moved to'the position shown in Figure 1 so that it will be out of register with the top of the receptacle as shown in Figures 1 and 2, and when in this position an ash tray 30 may be inserted thereinto to be removably held thereby.

The ring 28 may also be moved to the position shown'in Figure 3, before the tray 30 is placed thereinto, and when in this position the tray may be inserted into the ring to be held over the receptacle 10. If desired, and when the ring 28 is in the position shown in Figure 3, the tray may be removed and a tumbler 31 may be inserted into the receptacle.

Obviously, when the ash supporting tray ring is in the position shown in Figures 1 or 2, the tray 30 may be placed thereinto and at that time a tumbler 31 may be inserted into the receptacle 10 so that both will be held in position for use.

If desired, a bracket 32 may be secured to the outer surface of the receptacle 10 and the bracket may support a clamp 33 into which a match package 34 may be inserted.

With this improved construction it will be manifest that both the tumbler and the ash tray when both are used, will be out of the way and will not obstruct the top of the table, the only portions of the device which extend over the top of the table being the portions 13.

Furthermore, it will be manifest that this device may be removed from and replaced upon a table by one hand of the operator and when in position will be firmly locked against accidental displacement or detachment therefrom.

If desired, the receptacle 10 may be of a skeleton construction, for the purpose of lightness.

It will also be manifest that with this construction the locking member 23 as well as the depending finger engaging portion 17 of the member 15 will be protected and will be out of the way.

The portion 20 of the member 19 contacting with the lower surface of the table top cooperates with the shoulders 12 and projecting portions 13 to hold the attachment in position and prevent the same from dropping down.

While the preferred form of the invention has been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of this invention.

What is claimed as new is:

1. A device of the character described embodying a support for receiving and holding an article, means connected with the support to form a shoulder to contact the edge of a table and to extend a short distance over and to rest upon the top of the table, and means slidably secured to said support to extend under the table top, a portion of the second recited means being shaped to provide an inclined surface to engage a portion of the table and to co-operate with the first said means to clamp the device in position.

2. A device of the character described embodying a support for receiving and holding an article, means connected with the support to form a shoulder to contact the edge of a table and to extend a short distance over and to rest upon the top ofthe table, means slidably secured to said support to extend under the table top, a portion of the second recited means being shaped to provide an inclined surface to engage a portion of the table and to co-operate with the first said means to clamp the device in position, and locking means for maintaining the clamping means in clamping relation, said looking means embodying a shi'ftable element pro-i vided with an opening through which said slidable means passes.

3. A device of the character described embodying a support for receiving and holding an article, means connected with the support to form a shoulder to contact the edge of a table and to extend a short distance over and to rest upon the top of the table, means slidably secured to said support to extend under the table top, a portion of the second recited means being shaped to provide an inclined surface to engage a portion of the table and to co-operate with the first said means to clamp the device in position, and locking means for maintaining the clamping means in clamping relation, said locking means embodying a spring controlled pivotally mounted element provided with an'opening through which said slidable means passes.

'4. A device of the character described embodying a support for receiving and holding an article, means connected with the support to with the article holding surface upon said support.

5. A device of the character described embodying a receptacle for receiving and holding a glass or similar article, a plurality of shouldered portions connected therewith one of which engages an upright face of a table edge and the I other of which projects only an appreciable extent over the table top, an element slidably connected with the receptacle to engage under the table and co-operating with the said shouldered portion to clamp the device in position, and a tray supporting ring movably connected with the receptacle and adapted to be either p0- sitioned in register with the receptacle or out of register therewith. j

6. A device of the character described embodying a receptacle for receiving and holding a glass or similar article,v one or more shouldered portions connected therewith to engage a table edge and project only an appreciable extent over the table top, an element slidably connected with the receptacle to engage under the table and co-operating with the said shou1-- dered portion to clamp the device in position, a tray supporting ring movably connected with the receptacle and adapted to be either positioned in register with the receptacle or out of register therewith, and freely releasable locking means for maintaining said slidable element in clamping relation with said shouldered portion.

7. A device of the characterdescribed, embodyinga support for receiving and holding an article, means connected with the support to form a shoulder to contact the edge of a table and to extend a short distance over and to rest upon the top of the table, and means slidably secured to said support to extend under the table top, a portion of the second recited means being shaped to provide. an inclined surface to engage a portion of the table and to co-operate with the first said means to clamp the device in position, said inclined surface also operating as a cam or wedge to draw the portions of said support which project over the table top firmly thereagainst.

8. A device of the character described embodying a basket like glass holder, one or more shouldered portions projecting laterally therefrom to engage and extend over the edge of a table top, and a bodily adjustable clamping member connected with said holder to extend under the table top, said member having a cam shaped portion to engage a portion of. the table and to co-operate with said shouldered portion to draw the latter firmly against the table.

9. A device of the character described embodying a basket like glass holder, one or more shouldered portions projecting laterally therefrom to engage and extend over the edge of a table top, a clamping member slidably connected with said holder to extend under the table top', said member having a cam shaped portion to engage a portion of the table and to co-operate with said shouldered portionsto draw the latter firmly against the table, and means for releasably locking said member in clamping position.

10. A device of the character described embodying a basket like glass holder, one ormore shouldered portions projecting laterally therefrom to engage the upper face of and extend over the edge of a table top, a freely slidable clamping member connected with said holder to extend under the table top, said member having a cam shaped portion to engage a portion of the table per face of and project over the edge of a table, a

freely adjustable member connected with the saidreceptacle and adapted to project and move beneath the table top in a plane substantially parallel with the table top, a cam formation on said member to engage an edge of the table and co-operate with said extensions to constitute a holding clamp for the receptacle, and means for releasably locking said member in its adjusted position.

12. In a device of the character described a glass supporting receptacle, one or more shouldered extensions adapted to rest against the upright face of and project over the top edge of a. table, a member connected with the said receptacle and adapted to project beneath the table top, a cam formation on said member to engage an edge of the table and cp-operate with said extensions to constitute a holding clamp for the receptacle, said member being slidably connected with the bottom of said'receptacle.

13. In a device of the character described a glass supporting receptacle, one or more shouldered extensions adapted to rest against and project over the edge of a table, a member slidably connected with the said receptacle and adapted to project beneath the table top; a cam formation on said member to engage an edge of the table and co-operate with said extensions to constitute a holding clamp for the receptacle, locking means for said member, and an-ash tray supporting ring pivotally connected to the top of said receptacle so as to be swung into or out of register with the "receptacle.

14. A device of the character described embodying a basket like glass supporting receptacle, a shouldered formation connected with the receptacle to engage and extend over the edge of a table, and a member slidably connected with the bottom of the receptacle and provided with a finger engaging portion to operate the same, said slide provided with an upwardly inclined portion to extend under the table top whereby said inclined portion may be drawn against an edge of the table to form with said shouldered formation a clamp.

15. A device of the character described embodying a basket like glass supporting receptacle, a shouldered formation connected with the receptacle to engage and extend over the edge of, a table, a member slidably connected with the bottom of the receptacle and provided with a finger engaging portion to operate the same, said slide provided with an upwardly inclined portion to extend under the table top whereby said inclined portion may be drawnedge of a table, a member slidably connected with the bottom of the receptacle and provided with a finger engaging portion to operate the same,'said slide provided with an upwardly inclined portion to extend under the table top whereby said inclined portion may be drawn against an edge of the table to form with said shouldered formation a clamp, and a locking element for said member and movably connected with said receptacle, said locking member being provided with an opening through which said member passes.

17. A device of the character described embodying a basket like glass supporting receptacle, a shouldered formation connected with the receptacle to engage and extend over the edge of a table, a member slidably connected with the bottom of the receptacle-and provided with a finger engaging portion to operate the same, said slide provided with an upwardly inclined portion to extend under the table top whereby said inclined portion may be drawn against an edge of the table to form with said shouldered formation a clamp, and a spring controlled locking member pivotally connected with said receptacle and provided with an opening through which said member passes.

18. A device of the character described embodying a basket like glass supporting receptacle, a shouldered formation connected with the receptacle to engage and extend over the edge of a table, a member slidably connected with the bottom of the receptacle and providedwith a finger engaging portion to operate the same, said slide provided with an upwardly inclined portion to extend under the table top whereby said inclined portion may be drawn against an edge of the table to form with said shouldered formation a clamp, a portion of said member beyond the said inclined portion also contacting with the lower face of the table top, and an ash tray supporting ring mounted to swing about an upright pivot into and out of register with said receptacle.

19. A. device'of the character described embodying an article holder, 'lateral shouldered projections extending from the holder to abut the edge and engage over the upper surface of the table, said projections being laterally spaced from each other, and a member slidably connected with the holder to project beneath and engage the lower surface of the table top, a portion of said member being formed to provide an inclined or cam shaped portion to engage an, edge of the table between the said shouldered portions to form with said shoulders a three point clamp engagement with the table. a

20. A device of the character described embodying an article holder, lateral shouldered projections extending from the holder to abut the edge and engage over the upper surface of the table, said projections being laterally spaced from each other, a member slidably connected with the holder to project beneath and engage the lower surface of the table top, a portion of said member being formed to provide an inclined or cam-shaped portion to engage an edge of the table between the said shouldered portions to form with said shoulders a three point clamp engagement with the table, and means for releasably locking the clamping member in its adjusted position.

21. In a device of the character described, an article supporting member, means connected with said member engaging and projecting for only a short distance over the top surface of a table edge, and a member slidably connected with said supporting member and projecting beneath the table top to move ina plane substantially parallel with the table top, a portion ofthe slidable member adapted to engage a portion of the table and co-operate with the said means to constitute therewith a clamp for securing and holding the supporting member in position.

22. In a device of the character described, an article supporting member, means connected with said member engaging and projecting for only a short distance over the top surface of a table edge, a member slidably connected with said supporting member and projecting ,beneath the table top to move in a plane substantially parallel with the table top, a portion of the slidable member adapted to engage a por-- tion of the table and co-operate with the said means to constitute therewith a clamp for securing and holding the supporting member in position, and means for releasablylocking the said sliding member in the position .to which it has been moved.

23. In a device of the characterdescribed, an article supporting. member, means connected with said member engaging and projecting for only a short distance over the top surface of a table edge, and a member slidably connected 120 with said supporting member and projecting beneath the table top to move in a plane substantially parallel with the table top, a portion of the slidable member adapted to engage an edge-of the table in proximity to the said means, another portion of said slidable memberadapted to engage and move across the lower face of the table top, said slidable member co-operating with the said means to constitute therewith a clamp for securing and holding the supporting 130 member in position.
