FOLDING TABLE ATTACHMENT Filed March 9, 1932 Patented May 22, 1934 UNITED STATESV FOLDING TABLE ATTACHMENT Jack Latham, Greenwich, Conn., and William J. Bower, Jr., Pelham, N. Y.
Application March 9, 1932, Serial No. 597,650
4 Claims.
My invention relates to an improvement in a folding table and its novelty consists in the combination of parts as will be more fully herein pointed out.
My device is particularly adapted for card playing and the problem has always existed and still exists of furnishing suitable provisions for smoking and drinking for each player While playing and also having the table top free for playing so that ashes and drink will not be in the Way thereon so as to interfere with the playingv and lead also to upsetting the same on the table top.
My new and novel combination solves this problem and furnishes a table having ash trays removably secured therein and adapted to hold the usual ginger ale glass so that the ash trays and contents and the glasses supported therein are level or substantially level with the table top, thereby keeping it free for playing and preventing the accidental spilling of the ashes and drinks.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective of my complete device.
Figure 2 is a corner portion of Figure 1 showing the interior construction in dotted outline.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of a corner of Figure 1 with the tray removed and the legs in the folded position.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of one of the trays showing a glass mounted therein in dotted outline. 1
Figure 5 is a top plan view of Figure 4 Without the glass.
In the drawing 6 is a table top having an outside frame 7, inner frame 20 and legs 8 hinged at 9 so that the legs 8 are adapted to fold up against the underside of the table in the usual Well known manner. The four-corners of the table top 6 are cut out at 10 and in this cut out portion on the inside of the inner frame 20 there are cut slots 11. Ash trays 12 having brackets 13 With detent elements 14 therein are rigidly secured at their upper ends at 15 to said ash trays and are adapted to engage the slots 11, being locked therein against Yaccidental displacement by means of the detents 14. The ash trays 12 have a lip 16 running entirely around the outer edge of the same and adapted to t over and rest on the frame 7 and the arcuate portion of the cut out 10 so as to support the ash trays 12 in the fixed position in the cut outs 10. The ash trays 12 also have a circular cut out 1'7 which has a flange or lip 18 and is adapted to receive a glass 19 so that it Will be supported therein and it may be a glass of any length as the cut out 10 permits the glass to hang down any desired length under the table.
It will thus be seen that the ash trays 12 are locked in removable position through the brackets 13 engaging in the slots 11 and that the lip 16 is supported around the edges of the cut out 10 so that the ash trays 12 lie flat with the level of the surface of the table top 6 and glass 19 supported in the cut out 17 will also hang suspended therein with the top very nearly level with the top of the lip 18 and table top 6.
It is thus clearV that the table top 6 even with the ash trays 12 in position for use and glasses 19 mounted in -said ash trays 12 in the cut outs 17 furnish a free table tcp whereby the players are able to use the ash trays 12 freely Without danger of spilling the contents and the glasses 19 supported in the cut outs 17 of ash trays 12 are also supported so that they are not in the way of the players and not subject to the accidental upsetting of the same While playing.
It will be apparent that many variations may be made in the construction of my device Without departing from the spirit and intent of the same.
I claim:
1. In combination a table having foldable legs, cut out corners, means for locking ash trays in said corners comprising slots cut through the inside of the frame of said table corners and ash Y trays adapted to lock into said cut out corners comprising spring brackets secured to said trays and adapted to engage said slots.
2. In combination a table having foldable legs, cut out corners, means for locking ash trays in said corners comprising slots cut into the inside of the frame of said table corners and ash trays adapted to lock into said cut out corners level with said table top comprising spring brackets secured to said trays and adapted to engage said brackets.
3. In combination a table having foldable legs, cut out corners in said table, slots cut on the inside of the frame of said table corners, ash trays having spring brackets secured thereto adapted to engage said slots and be suspended therein with the upper edges of said trays at the level of the table top.
4. In combination a table having foldable legs, Y
cut out corners in said table, slots cut on the inside of the frame of said table corners, ash trays having spring brackets secured thereto adapted to engage said slots and be suspended therein with the upper edges of said trays at the level of the table top and means in said ash trays for holding glasses of varying heights therein with their upper ends substantially at the level of the table top.
