IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED CANE AND UMBRELLA.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,492, dated September 25, 1877 application filed August 11, 1877.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS F. DAROY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Cane and Umbrella, of which the following is a specification:

Figure l is a sectional view of my improved device arranged as an umbrella. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same arranged as a cane. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the outer section or tube, part being broken away to show the spiral groove.

The object of this invention is to furnish an umbrella which shall be so constructed that it may be closed up and used as a cane, and which shall be simple in construction and serviceable in use in either capacity.

The invention consists in a combined umbrella and cane, formed of the ribs, the handle, the stretchers, the runner, and the tubes and cap, constructed and arranged to operate in connection with each other, as hereinafter fully described.

A are the ribs, which are hinged to the handle B by a stationary ferrule, in the usual way. 0 are the stretchers, the outer ends of which are hinged to the ribs A, and their inner ends are hinged to a runner, D, in the usual way, except that there is no stop attached to the handle B above the said runner D, which enables the umbrella to fold or close upward.

The runner D is placed within a tube, E, within which it and the handle B slide, and which has a collar, 0 attached to the inner surface of its upper end, to prevent the said runner from passing entirely out of said tube.

Upon the handle B is formed a collar, 1), which fits into the tube E, and between which and the collar 6 the runner D is held when the umbrella is spread. The handle B is kept from being drawn out of the lower end of the tube E by an inwardly projecting pin, 0, against which the lower shoulder of the collar b strikes, and which, by turning the handle B into proper position, may be made to enter a curved groove in the said collar b to lock the handle in place when drawn down to close the umbrella and adjust the device as a cane.

F is a tube, placed upon the tube E. To the inner surface of the tube F, at one end, is attached a collar, f, in which is formed a curved groove to receive a pin attached to the outer surface of the tube E, and lock the said tube in place. In the collar f is also formed a straight groove, to enable the tube F to be withdrawn from the tube E, when desired.

With this construction, when the umbrella is extended, and it is desired to have a long handle, the tube F may be withdrawn from the tube E, reversed, and again secured to it by the pin and lock groove.

G is a cap, which fits upon either end of the tube E, and may be secured in place by a bayonet-clutch or other convenient and secure fastening. When the umbrella is extended, as shown in Fig. l, and it is desired to adjust it for use as a cane, the handle B is drawn down through the tube E until the collar b reaches, and is secured to, the lower end of the said tube E. As the handle is being drawn it slides down through the runner D until the stationary ferrule strikes the said runner D. The stretchers O are then pressed upward by the end of the tube E, which closes or folds the umbrella upward, and the whole umbrella passes down into said tube E. The tube F is then drawn upward and locked, and the cap G is secured to its upper end, and the device is ready for use as a cane, as shown in Fig. 2.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A combined umbrella and cane, formed of the ribs A, the handle B, the stretchers C, the runner D, and the tubes E F, and cap G, constructed and arranged to operate in connection with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
