Description

April 10, 1934. VAN HEES WHISTLE INSTRUMENT Filed NOV. 24. 1933 40 ter or aline, one at a time.
Patented Apr. 10, 1934 UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE- WHISTLE INSTRUMENT Gysbert Van Hees, Buffalo, N. Y. El:
Application November 24, 1933, Serial No. 699,598
5 Claims.
This invention relates to an instrument for use as an adjunct to whistling in order to increase the pitch and sound of the note and also to give the whistling a rolling effect.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawing:
Figure l is a view in front elevation of the device,
Figure 2 is a view on an enlarged scale primarily of the mouth engaging element,
Figure 3 is a view of the part of Figure 2 reversed with respect thereto,
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken .on the line 44 of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view taken on the r line 55 of Figure 2.
Referring specifically to the drawing, a lipengaging member is provided at 10 which may be rectangular, as shown, or of any other desired shape. This member 10 has a central depression 11 to receive the lips, and the member 10 is carried by a mounting body 12, preferably U -shaped in cross section as shown. The mounting body 12 and body 10, if desired, may be integral with each other or they may be made in separate parts soldered together or otherwise connected, as shown. Mounting body 12 extends across the base of the depression, cavity, or recess 11, and centrally thereof has a relatively small opening 13 therethrough.
By means of the mounting body 12 of U-shape, the lip-engaging member is slidably mounted for free movement longitudinally of a bar or blade 14 which has suitable openings 15 therethrough with which the opening 13 is adapted to regis- One end of the bar has an opening 16 therethrough for engagement by the little or pink finger.
The recess 11 and openings 13 and 15 may be round as shown, but if desired may be square,
'4 oval or of any other desired shape, and the open- 5 user is whistling, is pressed slowly and lightly against the lips and then gradually firm against 7? the mouth, the lips entering the depression 11.
It has been found that this causes an increase in the sound of the whistling, the same not only being louder but higher in pitch. (10
The device may be operated in exactly the same 3 manner while the parts 10-12 are in place on the bar 14, and the opening 13 is in registry with either of the openings 15. The operator, under these conditions, passes the pink finger of the right hand through the opening 16 and i grasps the mouthpiece device between the fingers of the left hand, the upper and lower portions of element 10 extending beyond the mounting body 12 and facilitating such engagement. The operator moves the right hand and thereby slides the rod 14 back and forth relatively to the opening 13, not too fast and not too slow, sliding the bar once for every note whistled. The use of this slidable rod in combination with the mouth-,v piece gives the whistling a rolling effect. In the use of the device both with and without the bar 14 the mouthpiece increases greatly the pitch and sound of the whistled notes.
Various changes may be resorted to provided... they fall within the spirit and scope of the in-"' vention.
I claim as my invention:
1. An instrument to improve whistling comprising a mouthpiece having a depression for.- engagement by the lips, and having an opening through the base of the depression relatively small with respect to the depression, and a mounting body for the said mouthpiece, said mouthpiece being angularly disposed with re-;;; spect to the mounting body whereby portions thereof will project beyond the same for engagement between the fingers.
2. An instrument to improve whistling comprising a mouthpiece having a depression for engagement by the lips, and having an opening through the base of the depression relatively small with respect to the depression, a mounting body for the said mouthpiece, and a bar on which the mounting body is slidable, said bar having openings registrable with the first mentioned openings through relative movement of the bar and mouthpiece.
3. An instrument to improve whistling comprising a mouthpiece having a depression for i engagement by the lips, and having an opening through the base of the depression relatively small with respect to the depression, and a bar movable relatively to the mouthpiece having a 110 5. An instrument to improve whistling com prising a mouthpiece having a depression for engagement by the lips, and having an opening through the base of the depression relatively small with respect to the depression, a mounting body for the said mouthpiece, and a bar on which the mounting body is slidable, said bar having openings registrable with the first mentioned openings through relative movement of the bar and mouthpiece, said mounting body being of U- shape in cross section.
