UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES B. ELLIOTT AND HORACE C. ALEXANDER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.; SAID ALEXANDER ASSIGNOR TO SAID ELLIOTT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SOAR-MAKING COMPOSITIONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,267, dated September 18, 1877; application filed March 6, 1877.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, CHARLES B. ELLIOTT and HORACE C. ALEXANDER. both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Alkali Compositions used in the Manufacture of Soap, and for cleansing and bleaching purposes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use This invention relates to that class of compositions used to decompose fat and similar substances in the manufacture of soap for cleansing purposes, and for the extraction of colors in bleaching processes; and it consists of a new compound known as Amalgamated Alkali, which possesses the qualities neces sary for bleaching, cleansing, and soap-making, combined in an article specially adapted for family or general use, and which can be made up into a liquid, paste, powder, or other form.
The composition is formed by mixing salsoda or subcarbonate of soda and common salt or chloride of sodium with caustic soda.
To prepare the amalgamated alkali, take one pound of caustic soda and four ounces of Sal-soda or subcarbonate of soda, and. mix
them thoroughly together. Then take one ounce of chloride of sodium or common salt, and mix it with the aforesaid mixture of canstic soda and sal-soda.
One ounce of borax may be added to the mixture with a beneficial efi'ect; but it is not an essential ingredient, and we do not claim it as a part of the composition.
After the composition is mixed as above, the article is ready to be used for all the ordinary purposes for which either pure caustic soda or bleaching salts may be used.
The compound may be modified or varied as to the quantities of theingredients used as circumstances may require; but the proportions given produce the best results.
The composition is packed in hermeticallysealed packages of a form and size adapted for family and general use.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The composition herein described, consisting of sal-soda,common salt, and caustic soda, substantially in the proportions specified, and for the purposes set forth.
CHARLES B. ELLIOTT. HORACE C. ALEXANDER. Witnesses:
J. P. (JoNVEasE, EDWARD M. GROUT.
