Description
METAL SIGN HOLDING MEANS Filed June 4, 1 32 INVENTOR.
ATToRNEYs.
Patented Mar. 13, 1934 PATENT orrics METAL 'SIGN HOLDING MEANS William H. Brett, Shaker Heights, Ohio, assignor to The Enamel Products Company, Cleveland, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Application June 4, 1932, Serial No. 615,407
Claims.
The present invention relates to the provision of means for supporting a novel type of meta] sign such as described and set forth in my prior Patent No. 1,849,361, granted March 15, 1932. It is the general object and nature of my present invention to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive supporting structure for holding such metal signs to a vertical wall surface, while at the same time avoiding the necessity of placing holes or similar openings in the face or flange of the sign. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Fig. 1 is a front view of one form of sign secured to a. supporting surface by the holding means embodying the principle of my invention; Fig. 2 is a front view of a differently shaped form of sign; Fig. 3 is a section taken substantially on line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken substantially upon line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and Fig.
6 is an enlarged perspective View of my sign holding clip.
Now referring more particularly to the drawing, in Fig. 1 I have shown a rectangular sign having the outer display surface 1 surrounded by the oifset marginal portion 2. In Fig. 2 I
have shown another form of elongated rectangular sign having the outer display surface 3 surrounded by the raised border portions 4. The
edges of both the sign shown in Figs. 1 and 2 are in the form of the rearwardly directed flanges 5, on which there is in turn the inwardly turned flanges 6 which lie in a plane parallel to the outer display surface of the sign. A mounting clip consisting of the fiat body portion '7 and the reversely bent or hooked portion 8 is adapted to engage with the flanges 6. By
comparing Figures 3 and 4 it will be seen that the hook portions 8 of the mounting clips may be either in a completely bent U-shaped form as shown in Fig. 3, or in the partially bent V- shaped form as shown in Fig. 4. A hole 9 is provided in the body portion 7 of the mounting clips for the reception of a suitable fastening screw 10. In mounting the sign upon a wooden supporting surface 11, the screws may be driven directly therein. However, as in the case of a stone or brick-supporting surface 12, holes are first cut or drilled in the wall and hard Wood plugs 13 are then driven into the holes. The
fastening screws 10 are then secured to the hard wood plugs 13.
In mounting the form of sign as shown in Fig. 1, the upper clips are first screwed to the wall before placing the sign on the clips. The sign is then hung on these two upper clips and the bottom clips are hooked over the bottom flange 6 and then tightly screwed in position. A somewhat similar procedure is followed in the erection in the form of sign shown in Fig. 2 with the exception that it is necessary to install only one clip along the top edge of the sign. It will thus be seen that the herein-described sign-holding means may be quickly and conviently installed; and that furthermore the sign itself serves as a means for properly aligning and determining the position of the sign-holding clips, the clips at all times being readily accessible due to their exterior projection from the periphery of the sign.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
1. In a metal sign of the character described, the combination of an outer display wall, inwardly turned marginal flanges on all edges thereof, and hook means for securing said display wall to a supporting surface and preventing its removal therefrom comprising a plurality of small plates engaging with said marginal flanges, securing means on at least one of said plates including a portion external to one of the marginal flanges adapted to receive a fastening screw or the like extending into said supporting surface.
2. In a metal sign of the character described, the combination of an outer display wall, inwardly turned marginal flanges on all edges thereof, and hook means for securing said display wall to a supporting surface and preventing its removal therefrom comprising a plurality of small plates, said plates each having a bent portion adapted to engage with a marginal flange and a flat portion extending exteriorly from the periphery of said display wall.
3. In a metal sign of the character described, the combination of an outer display wall, inwardly turned marginal flanges on all edges thereof, and hook means for securing said display wall to a supporting surface and preventing its removal therefrom comprising a plurality of small plates, said plates each having a reversely bent portion adapted to form a hooked engagement with a marginal flange, one at least of said plates having a portion external to the marginal flange adapted to receive a fastening screw or the like extending into said supporting surface.
4. In a metal sign of the character described, the combination of an outer display wall, inwardly turned marginal flanges on all edges thereof, and hook means for securing said display Wall to a supporting surface and preventing its removal therefrom comprising a plurality of small plates, said plates each having a bent portion adapted to engage with a marginal flange and a flat portion extending exteriorly from the periphery of said display wall, and an aperture in said flat portion for the reception of a fastening screw or the like.
5. In a metal sign of the character described, the combination of an outer display wall, inwardly turned marginal flanges on all edges thereof, and hook means for securing said display wall to a supporting surface and preventing its removal therefrom comprising a plurality of small plates, said plates each having a flat portion and a reversely bent portion adapted to form a hooked engagement with a marginal flange, and an aperture in said flat portion for the reception of a fastening screw or the like. One at least of which is external to the marginal flange.
WILLIAM H. BRETT.
