Description

R. L. PLATT SPRING STRUCTURE March 6, 1934.
Filed .Sept. 9, 1932 I UH! INVENTOR 0176M L /aff A TTORNE VS Patented Mar. 6, 1934 PATET QF'FICE SPRING STRUCTURE Robert L. Platt, Oakland, Calif assignor to L. A. Young Spring & Wire Corporation, Detroit,
Mich.
Application September 9, 1932, Serial No. 632,417
4 Claims.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved bed spring or spring filler unit for mattresses and the like in which the structure is supported against lateral swaying or sagging, and also objectionable tilting, when the weight is mainly on one side of the structure.
Second, to provide a structure having these advantages which is simple and economical and does not add imduly to the weight of the structure.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a fragmentary end view of a bed bottom embodying the features of my invention, parts being shown conventionally.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing one side considerably depressed.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated the spring structure designated generally by the numeral 1, which is a bed bottom, is provided with a bottom frame 2 and top border frame 4. The springs 3 illustrated are of the helical conical type suitably mounted on the bottom frame and carrying the top frame. To support the top frame against lateral swaying movement I provide an equalizing means comprising the depending arms 5 mounted centrally of the end members 6 of the top frame. Equalizer bars '7 are pivoted at 8 on these arms, links 9 being connected to opposite ends of the equalizer bars by the pivots 10. The links are oppositely disposed and pivoted at 11 to the bottom frame 2. This arrangement permits free vertical movement of the top frame and effectively prevents lateral or side swaying movement thereof.
The equalizer mechanism illustrated is substantially that of the George A. Stackhouse application for Letters Patent filed June 13, 1932, Serial No. 616,883, the embodiment there shown being a mattress filler.
To prevent objectionable tilting when one side of the top frame is depressed, I provide snubber 3 straps 12 disposed adjacent the sides of the struc- The straps are preferably provided with holes 13 adapted to receive the headed studs 14 disposed in vertical alinement on the top and bottom frames. A leather or fabric strap such as a piece of webbing is suitable for the purpose.
With this combination of means for preventing side sway and the means for preventing an excessive tilting, the top frame is guided in a ver tical plane when under load and with a minimum of tilting, which is of advantage when the load is entirely on one side of the bed or when it is occupied by persons varying considerably in weight.
I have not attempted to illustrate or describe various other adaptations or modifications which I contemplate as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a spring structure comprising upright body springs and top and bottom border frames assembled therewith, arms fixedly secured to the end members of the top border frame to depend centrally thereof, equalizer bars pivotally mounted on said arms, and links pivotally connected at their outer ends to the bottom frame and at their inner ends to said equalizer bars, said equalizer bars being normally disposed at an angle to the vertical planes of their pivots, the combination of flexible snubber straps disposed adjacent the sides of the frames and limiting the upward movement of one side when the opposite side is depressed.
2. The combination in a spring structure comprising upright body springs and border frames assembled therewith, equalizer bars pivotally mounted on opposite members of one border frame centrally thereof, and links pivotally con- .95 nected to the other border frame on opposite sides of and in spaced relation to the equalizer bars so that the links act in opposite directions on the equalizer bars, of means limiting the upward movement of one side of the top frame when the other side is. depressed.
3. In a spring structure comprising upright body springs and top and bottom border frames assembled therewith, equalizer bars pivotally mounted on one frame, and links pivotally connected at their outer ends to the other frame and at their inner ends to said equalizer bars, the combination of flexible snubber straps disposed adjacent the sides of the frames and limnected to the other border frame on opposite sides of and in spaced relation to the equalizer bars so that the links act in opposite directions on the equalizer bars, of means limiting the upward movement of the top while permitting depressing thereof.
