This invention relates to bottle openers, its object being to provide a de-capping device in association with a body member adapted to be placed over the neck of a bottle of carbonated liquid and providing a means to exclude air from contact with the liquid in the bottle thus permitting a bottle to be partially emptied and then again sealed by seating the de-capping member against an outlet opening with which the body is provided.
The usual de-capping device simply removes the cap and, if the carbonated liquid is not fully used, the gas passes off from the liquid. By my improved device it is possible to pour out a portion of the contents of a bottle and then hold the remaining liquid in practically its original state.
These and other various objects and novel features of the invention are hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and the preferred form of construction of a bottle opener embodying my invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a vertical section of my improved bottle opening device shown in association with the neck of a bottle.

Fig. 4 is a detail in plan view of a portion of the de-capping element employed to remove the cap from the bottle and to seal the same without recapping.
In Fig. 1 is shown the neck of a bottle 1 and my improved bottle opening device consists of a body 2 preferably of soft rubber having a lower portion 3 through which the neck of the bottle is introduced and which tightly fits thereover. The central portion 4 of the body is enlarged to provide a chamber in which the end 5 of the decapping lever 6 is movable. The outer end of the body is apertured as at 7 through which the liquid may be poured and is also provided with a seat 8 at the inner face of the opening against which the flat face 5 of the de-capping lever 6 seats to close the discharge aperture. The lever 6 is preferably of metal and is here shown as being molded in place in the Wall of the rubber body and thus this rubber flexibly supports the lever permitting the same to be used in the same way as the ordinary de-capper is used. The end 5 of the de-capping lever 6, in the preferred construction shown, has an inturned end portion 9 to engage over the cap 10 as is indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and this relationship of the parts may be secured by movement of the thumb or finger of the operator through the discharge aperture '7 of the body 2 to press the lever to the position shown in the said dotted lines. By pressing downwardly upon the outer end of the lever when in the dotted position, the cap is removed from 0 the end of the bottle and thus permitting the fluid to be poured therefrom. Under this condition the lever is necessarily held from engagement with the seat 8.
As soon as the desired quantity has been poured 5 from the bottle and due to the pressure resulting from the escape of the gases in the liquid, the end 5 is held in pressure contact with the seat 8 and thus prevents the liquid from further loss of gas content. The body of the remaining liquid is 10 therefore maintained in its charged state although the bottle has been de-capped. Under this condition, the bottle may be set away until required for further use.
Various changes may be made in the construcu tion of the body member and in the de-capping member without departing from the spirit of this invention, the principal feature of which resides in the provision of the associated body and decapping element functioning not only to remove 89 the cap from the bottle but to seal the discharge aperture of the body and hold the same sealed under pressure of the gas within the body.
Having thus briefly described my invention, its utility and mode of operation, what I claim and 35 desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A bottle opener comprising a body formed of a soft rubber, said body member having an enlarged central chamber and an opening at one 90 side to permit introduction of the capped bottle neck and a discharge aperture, a de-capping member supported in the said body in a manner to permit the same to be turned to engage and remove the cap or moved to position to close the discharge aperture.
2. An opener for bottles containing carbonated liquid comprising a hollow body member having an aperture at one end to permit the insertion of a capped bottle neck into the body and a dis- 100 charge aperture at the opposite end, a lever supported by the body to permit the same to be turned to engage the cap of the bottle to remove the same and permit discharge of carbonated liquid from the bottle and discharge aperture of L the body or to position to close the discharge aperture to thereby prevent further escape of gas from the liquid.
3. A bottle opener comprising a hollow body member of soft rubber having an opening at one end to receive the capped end of the neck of a bottle containing carbonated liquid and an opening at the opposite end for the discharge of liquid, 9. de-capping lever molded in place in the wall of the body member and having a portion adapted to be moved to position to engage the bottle cap and remove the same to permit discharge of liquid,-said body member being provided with a seat at the discharge opening against which the de-capping portion may be placed to seal the same.
4. A bottle opener for use in' opening bottles containing carbonated liquids comprising a hollow body of a flexible and yieldable material apertured on one side to permit the same to be positioned over a capped bottle neck and having a discharge aperture at the opposite side, a decapping member molded in the body on one side and having a portion within the body movable to engage the bottle cap and a portion exteriorly of the body for operation thereof to remove the cap to thereby permit liquid to be discharged from the bottle through the body, the portion of the de-capping member within the body and the inner face of the wall of the body surrounding the discharge aperture being so complemental in form that, when the said portion of the de-capper engages the said portion surrounding the discharge aperture, the bottle is maintained sealed by pressure within the body to thereby maintain the'liquid remaining in the bottle in a charged condition.
5. A bottle opener comprising a hollow body formed on one side to permit the same to be positioned over a capped bottle neck and having a discharge aperture at the other side and an enlarged central chamber in which the capped end of the bottle neck is positioned, a de-capping member pivotally supported by the body and movable to engage the cap and operable from the exterior thereof to remove the same to permit liquid to be discharged from the bottle through the body, the de-capping member having a fiat surface opposite the cap engaging face, and a seat surrounding the discharge aperture and engageable by the said fiat surface of the de-capping member to seal the bottle.

A bottle opener comprising a hollow body apertured onone side to receive a capped bottle neck and on the opposite side for discharge of liquid, a de-capping member in the hollow body movable to engage the cap and operable from the exterior thereof to remove the same to thereby permit liquid to be discharged from the bottle through the body, and means on the de-capping member for closing the discharge aperture of the body.
'7. A bottle opener comprising a hollow body of soft rubber apertured on one side to receive a capped bottle neck and on the opposite side for discharge of liquid, a de-capping member in the hollow body movable to engage the cap and operable from the exterior of the body to remove the same and thereby permit liquid to be discharged from the bottle through the body, and a raised wall about the discharge aperture engageable by the de-capping member to thereby seal the bottle.
