Description

W. H. HANCOCK.;
GARRIAGES.
No.194,87o. P'a'nentedsept'. 4,1877.
mi MP IHIIII I -I IIIIIIIIII lI INVENTUB z N-FETERS` PHOwlunHCGRAPMER WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES OFFICEn WARREN H. HANCOCK, OF AUGUSTA, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,870, dated September 4, 1877; application led November 18, 1876.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN H. HANCOCK, of Augusta, in the State of Georgia, have invented an Improved Carriage for Agriculturists7 Implements, suchl as stalk-cutters and the like, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 of the drawing is a plan, and Fig. 2 a transverse section.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
A is the frame of carriage; B C, the axles, and D E the wheels. With wheel E is connected a friction-drum, M, of conical form, and provided with clutch m, thatv engages with teeth on wheel E. N is a conical drum on crank-shaft u, arranged with its larger portion opposite the smaller portion of drum M.
O is an intermediate wheel on rod o, that is supported by a vertically-sliding frame, P,
whose lower end passes through a mortise in platform A', and is connected with a lever, p, pivoted at q, as well as a ratchet-bar, r, projecting through platform A. The spring-bolt s engages with ratchet r, and has a disengaging-lever that projects through platform A. The wheel O is grooved and provided with clutch u, moved by lever Q acting through lever c and vrod w. A notched bar, a', is attached to frame A to hold lever Q in position.
The wheel O is forced between drums by pressure on ratchet-bar 1', and the motion of drum N transmitted to drum M and wheel E. The relative speed of the drums is varied by means of sliding the wheel O on rod o.
What I claim as new and of my invention 1s- The combination, with wheel O, arranged with respect to cones M N, as shown and described, of the vertically-sliding frame P, lever p, ratchet-bar 4^, and spring-bolt S, as and for the purpose specitied.
WARREN H. HANCOCK. Witnesses:
GEO. K. LOMBARD, A. P. MCALLIsTEE.
