The structure of the baffle 14' in the chamber 16 is designed to facilitate the separating action between the water and the air, and incidentally helps to shield the port 25 from any disturbing action of the current discharging into the outlet 17, and is also beneficial as a shield to this zone at times when an auxiliary air pump is in use. a
The function of the opening 25 is primarily to break the vacuum on stopping the pumping operation, and prevent all the water from being completely siphoned out of the pump chambers; thus a sufficient amount of water for the primary operation is trapped and maintained in the pump chambers at all times. It is this water of course which seals the discharge line during the primary operation, by preventing the leakage of air back from the discharge line 17 into the vacuum or suction line 22. The size of the port 25 need not be large enough to constitute any appreciable leak or loss in the pumping capacity after the pump is primed.
The construction is also of a design well adapted for the ,mounting of any suitable type of positive displacement air pump, such as a handpump 28, in efiicient operative relationship to the primary pump structure, as an accessory for either reinforcing the self-priming function or as a substitute therefor under some circumstances.
It will thus be seen that a simple and compact construction of practical and efficient design is thereby provided for carrying out the aforesaid objects of the invention, and while the form of construction illustrated and described is deemed that best suited to the purpose in View, it is desired to expressly reserve the right to make such changes or modifications as may fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A self-priming pump construction comprising a pump casing providing an impeller chamber and a housing provided with an irregular baffle partition dividing the housing into a receiving compartment having an enlarged lower portion in communication with the impeller chamber intake and a discharge compartment having a reduced lower portion in communication with the pump discharge, means providing a combined recirculating and direct pump discharge passageway between the upper portion of said discharge compartment and the periphery of the impeller chamber, and a baffle member projecting from said partition in position to shield said passageway from the main discharge current from the pump.
